Did you later investigate why I was hospitalized with bleeding back then?
Ling Huanwu stared at the ceiling, her eyes suddenly reddening. "Actually, I was already three months pregnant at the time!"
Zhou Shuyao, kneeling on the ground, froze. He looked up at the woman on the bed, whose face was calm, his eyes filled with shock. "Didn't the doctor say you had menopausal hemorrhage? How could this be..."
"Your secretary told you, right? But it doesn't matter."
"Do you know what I was thinking when I was taken to the hospital that day and the doctor told me I was pregnant? I thought about keeping the baby."
"But what did you do? You sent your three grown sons to take turns coming to my hospital room to provoke me."
"The baby could have been saved, but one of them stopped me from pressing the emergency call button, another locked the door, and the third even jokingly told the nurse at the door that I was faking it..."
Zhou Shuyao trembled uncontrollably, overwhelmed by waves of regret and remorse.
But Ling Huanwu had no intention of letting him go. She tore open the festering wound from the past and sprinkled salt on it.
She looked calmly at Zhou Shuyao, her eyes devoid of any emotion. "All three children said that you told them that I was faking illness and that I was bullying your little secretary who came from a poor mountain area!"
"In the end, I watched helplessly as the baby in my belly turned into a pool of blood and flowed away."
"But their brother didn't believe I had a miscarriage and severe bleeding. He believed your secretary and what you said, thinking I used blood plasma to deceive you. He held his nose and cursed my bad luck, and turned away without even calling a doctor."
"Do you know how I signed the consent form for the D&C procedure and had the surgery all by myself on the operating table?"
"The doctor showed me, there are three embryos! Three girls!"
"I almost didn't make it off the operating table that day!"
Ling Huanwu could no longer control her emotions and screamed hysterically.
"You and your three good sons killed your daughter and sister. What right do you have to kneel before me and beg for forgiveness?"
Zhou Shuyao's shoulders trembled violently, and a sharp pain exploded along his shinbone, but it was nothing compared to the pain of the tear in his chest.
He clutched his chest and collapsed to the ground, oblivious to the blood dripping from his fingernails digging deep into his flesh.
All the belated regrets turned into scalding tears, which fell onto the cold ground, leaving holes of varying depths, just like his soul riddled with wounds.
He broke down, sobbing and wailing like a wounded wild beast unable to escape its predicament.
He and his lover were having a wild and happy time, fantasizing about bringing home their illegitimate daughter for her to raise, while she lay alone on the cold operating table, having lost the girl they had longed for for years.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..."
He murmured helplessly over and over again, his heart aching as if it were being torn into several pieces.
Finally, as he looked at Ling Huanwu, who had suddenly become calm and was staring at him, he felt a metallic taste in his throat, and then coughed up a mouthful of blood before completely losing consciousness.
Qin Jinshen, carrying freshly cooked oyster noodles, stood at the door, tears streaming down his face, feeling annoyed and wanting to slap himself a few times.
No one knew that the secretary was actually a poor student he was sponsoring, and it was he who arranged for her to get close to Zhou Shuyao.
She was a young girl who looked about five parts like Ling Huanwu.
He knew Zhou Shuyao would definitely take the bait.
But he never allowed that secretary to harm Ling Huanwu.
She had no idea that the secretary had fabricated a lie that almost caused her to die on the operating table.
Qin Jin slumped to the ground, his fists shoved into his mouth, painful whimpers lingering in his throat, the pain making him almost faint with each breath.
He was too ashamed to go in and see her, so he dropped the thermos and practically fled.
Zhou Jiuzhen and his mother-in-law Wang Guihua appeared at the clinic carrying the hand-pulled noodles they had made, only to find Zhou Shuyao in the room, almost fainting from crying. Both of them were so shocked that they couldn't say a word for a long time.
"What's wrong, Shuyao? Even if you want to save your wife, you don't need to cry like this. That Song Yaoyao has ulterior motives. Can't we just break up with her?"
Wang Guihua picked up her son from the ground, thinking he was pleading with Ling Huanwu for mercy.
Zhou Shuyao had no way to express his bitterness and could only watch helplessly as Zhou Jiuzhen fawned over Ling Huanwu.
Pour the hot, cooked hand-pulled noodles into a ceramic bowl.
Zhou Jiuzhen blew on the steam rising from the bowl, then took a pair of chopsticks and handed them to Ling Huanwu. "Comrade Lin, why are you being so delicate? It's just a fever, why are you crying like this?"
Seeing that she was holding her chopsticks without moving, her delicate face streaked with tears, Zhou Jiuzhen sighed and said helplessly, "I really owe you something. I hate seeing girls cry. What did my brother do to offend you? I'll give him a good talking to when we get back!"
"But these noodles were cooked by my mother herself. I didn't want to disappoint her, so I'm feeding you this."
"Oh, your mouth is so small, how long will it take me to finish feeding you..."
The incessant murmurs echoed in my ears.
A mouthful of fragrant noodles was brought to Ling Huanwu's lips, and only then did she notice Zhou Jiuzhen feeding her with chopsticks. She reluctantly ate the noodles he had picked up.
The hand-pulled noodles even have a fried egg on top, browned on both sides.
The broth is rich and flavorful, bursting with the taste of oysters and scallion rolls.
The noodles are chewy and springy, a result of skillful technique required to make them.
One taste and you know it was made by Zhou Jiuzhen, yet he still claims it was made by his mother.
Ling Huanwu ate faster and faster, and Zhou Jiuzhen fed her faster and faster as well.
The level of understanding between the two left Zhou Shuyao and his mother-in-law completely stunned.
Zhou Shuyao was so angry that his fists clenched so tightly they cracked.
