Chapter 26 Finally Arriving at the Island

Chapter 26 Finally Arriving at the Island

The deck is lowered.

Passengers rushed on board to disembark.

Ling Huanwu blushed and quickly got off him.

She felt like she must be going crazy.

They only touched lips briefly, it's not like they've never done it before, why are they acting like shy young girls?

She didn't dare turn around to look at him, and ran over to join the crowd as they disembarked.

After traversing stretches of desolate mudflats, this group of military dependents finally arrived at the island, which was rumored to have extremely harsh conditions.

When Ling Huanwu saw the two rows of dilapidated stone houses in front of her, she almost fainted.

If you didn't know better, you'd think the place in front of you was a primitive tribe!

In remote mountainous areas like Zhoujia Village, the houses are all made of adobe, with wooden windows and a kitchen, and are divided into a main house and a hall.

But the stone house in front of them didn't even have windows, only a wooden door that could be opened and closed.

Ling Huanwu finally understood why Song Yaoyao had refused to come to the island with the army in her previous life.

"Greetings, Commander! Greetings, Commander's wife!"

The first group of guards who arrived on the island stood ramrod straight and saluted Zhou Jiuzhen and her before unlocking the door, entering the house, and lighting the kerosene lamp with a match.

Ling Huanwu entered the house with weak legs, and when she saw the situation inside, she was completely blind.

The room was practically bare, with only a lonely bed, table, and cabinet inside.

What's even more terrifying is that the kitchen is outside, with just a simple thatched shed built on top of the house.

I wiped my hand on the stove, and there was a thick layer of dirt.

If we were to cook something, we'd be eating sand and dirt.

By this time, she was so hungry that her stomach was growling loudly.

Zhou Jiuzhen took off his shirt and laid it on the sandy wooden plank. Bare-chested, he picked up a pile of firewood from inside the house and walked out. "Wait a moment, I'm going out to cook something."

The guard, Xiao Wang, gave Ling Huanwu a strange look, as if to say that he had never seen a wife who made her husband cook.

He quickly turned around and followed Zhou Jiuzhen out, snatching the firewood from Zhou's hand and saying urgently, "Commander, how can you cook? Let me cook for you!"

"No need, you should go back to sleep, it's so late."

As the two were making excuses, a dark-skinned, pretty young girl suddenly appeared at the door.

She was carrying a large, steaming enamel basin, and when she saw Zhou Jiuzhen, two dimples appeared on her face as she smiled. "Commander Zhou, I heard you were coming back today, so I specially cooked some sweet potato slices for you..."

As they were talking, the little girl noticed Ling Huanwu sitting on the bed in the room, and changed the subject, asking, "And who is this?"

"Oh, that's my new wife whom I married this time I came home."

Zhou Jiuzhen took the basin from the girl without ceremony and placed it on the table. Then he took out a two-cent note from his pocket and handed it to her, saying, "Comrade Lin, thank you."

Lin Xiaoqin was still reeling from the shock of the man in front of her getting married after only a month apart when Zhou Jiuzhen suddenly tried to give her money. She hurriedly refused, saying she didn't want it.

"No, we, the People's Liberation Army, cannot take even a needle or a penny from the people!"

In the end, Lin Xiaoqin couldn't refuse any longer, so she blushed and accepted the money. Reluctantly, she lingered, saying she wanted to help tidy up the house and refused to leave.

While sweeping the house, Lin Xiaoqin would occasionally turn around and glance at Ling Huanwu.

The blatant scrutiny in their eyes was extremely uncomfortable.

Ling Huanwu understood.

It seems this young woman likes her husband and sees her as a rival.

Unfortunately, Zhou Jiuzhen, a complete novice, is still completely unaware of this.

By this time, she had recovered from the persistent swaying sensation in her feet after disembarking.

She came with the army and didn't want any woman to have designs on her man!

So, she straightened her proud little body, took a couple of steps, and then collapsed into Zhou Jiuzhen's arms, pouting weakly and saying coquettishly, "Honey, I'm still seasick, can you feed me...?"

The people in the room fell silent for a moment.

Only the deafening chirping of cicadas outside remained.

Zhou Jiuzhen coughed lightly, responded softly with a blank face, walked over awkwardly, picked up the woman who was as soft as cotton in front of the two of them, carried her to the dining table, and turned to find a bowl to put food in.

The guard, Xiao Wang, blushed and, with great tact, quickly pulled Lin Xiaoqin, who was holding a broom and had red eyes, out of the house. "Commander, Madam, you should get some rest. I'll take Comrade Xiao Lin home."

After saying that, he thoughtfully closed the door for the two of them.

Zhou Jiuzhen took a bowl that was as big as Ling Huanwu's face and filled it with food from the enamel basin.

Looking at the golden-yellow pieces in the bowl, Ling Huanwu realized that these were sweet potato slices, a specialty of the southern coastal region.

In her previous life, she had experienced both hardship and the finest delicacies.

But I've never eaten this before.

Zhou Jiuzhen had probably never fed anyone before. He mashed the sweet potato slice several times with a spoon before scooping up a small piece, blowing on it, and then feeding it to Ling Huanwu. "It's a little hot, eat slowly."

Ling Huanwu didn't stand on ceremony. She opened her small mouth and bit the large ceramic spoon, swallowing a whole mouthful of sweet potato slices.

I never expected the sweet potatoes here to be as sweet as sugar.

The moment she landed on the island, she realized she had been careless. She hadn't made any thorough preparations to hide on the island with the army in order to avoid Qin Jinshen.

Since she chose to live on a resource-scarce island, she must have stocked up on food and other necessities beforehand, otherwise she would definitely suffer in the next two years.

In a place where even buying things is difficult, her hoarding of a large amount of gold bars and antiques is simply a waste of space.

Ultimately, it's because the man in front of her refuses to touch her, leaving her with pitifully little space.

The next ship to the island will take another month.

She still had to find a way to swallow her pride and persuade this clueless man to help her expand her space before the next ship docked, so that she could go out and stock up on supplies to improve her life on the island.

Ling Huanwu smacked her lips against the sweet and soft sweet potato in her mouth, stretched her long, slender, fair neck, and leaned closer to Zhou Jiuzhen, "When will our marriage application be approved?"

"The political commissar and the others haven't arrived yet; they probably won't be here until next month, so there's no rush..."

Zhou Jiuzhen wiped the sweat from his forehead, blew on a spoonful of sweet potato soup, and turned his head just as Ling Huanwu suddenly leaned in. Caught off guard, his lips brushed against the corner of her lips.

It's incredibly soft!

Ling Huanwu's eyes widened, her red lips, which had just been wiped, trembled with excitement.

"What did you say? Another month!"

"So... is there meat to eat here? What do the villagers eat?"

Without realizing it, her voice unconsciously rose in pitch.

Zhou Jiuzhen licked the tiny bit of saliva that had been sprayed onto his lips, and with a straight face, he earnestly reassured her, "Although there's no meat to eat here, there's plenty of seafood. I guarantee you'll eat your fill of fish..."

Before she could finish speaking, Ling Huanwu's lips twitched. She was allergic to fish and shrimp!

Then, almost instinctively, she asked, "Then why are we having sweet potato chips for dinner? Isn't there rice to cook?"

Zhou Jiuzhen tilted his head, pulled out a nylon bag from under the cabinet, and took out a sweet potato bigger than his face, saying, "Rice can't be grown on the island, but don't worry, there's plenty of sweet potatoes to eat!"

Ling Huanwu felt a sudden dizziness.

Sweet potatoes are delicious, but she grew up eating rice, so how can she go without rice?

This means she has to endure this for a month, without even meat or rice.

"Comrade Ling, Huanwu, Huanwu... What's wrong with you? Wake up..."

Hearing the calls in her ear, Ling Huanwu slumped limply into someone's arms...
