“It’s almost Chinese New Year, and the factory is eager to close for the holidays. He’s been very busy these past few days and won’t be home for lunch, so we don’t need to wait for him,” Fang Qiao explained.
After saying that, she handed the chopsticks in her hand to Wang Yun, "Come on, let's eat. Try Xiaojing's cooking and see if it suits your taste."
There were two dishes on the table: garlic-flavored pork belly and scrambled eggs with canned tomatoes, as well as a meatball soup.
"These two dishes on the table are my favorites, and judging from their appearance, they are definitely made with your skills. I'm sure they'll suit my taste." Wang Yun took the chopsticks and picked up a slice of garlic-flavored pork belly.
The cooked pork is sliced into large, thin pieces and topped with a sauce made of minced garlic and chili oil. The aroma of garlic is rich and the spiciness is irresistible. It's fatty but not greasy, and the taste is simply amazing.
She gave Xiaojing a thumbs up: "Delicious! It tastes just like your sister-in-law's."
Xiao Jing was pleased with the praise and took the initiative to use her chopsticks to put another piece on Wang Yun's plate: "Sister Wang Yun, if it's delicious, please eat more."
"Okay."
The garlic-flavored pork belly was delicious, but Wang Yun didn't keep piling it into his bowl; he only ate a few slices as a symbolic gesture.
After all, meat is so rare these days that it's rationed even during the Lunar New Year. Only ignorant children would only pick out meat to eat when visiting someone's home.
She turned and scooped a bowl of meatball soup. The meat inside was tender and bouncy, and the radish meatballs were added after the soup was cooked, so they still had a crispy texture. It was almost the same as the meatball soup in state-run restaurants.
The delicious and visually appealing meal whetted Wang Yun's appetite.
Finally, she ate until she was completely full, then slumped in her chair with a satisfied look on her face, unwilling to get up: "Xiaojing's cooking is so delicious, I ate until I was stuffed without even realizing it. This is the best meal I've had since I came back from the countryside, it will keep me full for two days."
"That's perfect." Fang Qiao smiled and joked, "The next meal will be the New Year's Eve dinner, another feast of fish and meat."
Wang Yun was amused: "Hahaha, great idea!"
After chatting for a while, Wang Yun felt less full and got up to help Xiao Jing take the bowls and chopsticks to the kitchen.
She wanted to help wash the dishes, but a well-mannered family wouldn't let a guest wash the dishes, so Xiaojing quickly pushed her out of the kitchen.
Wang Yun spent the whole afternoon at Fang Qiao's house, not leaving until it was almost dark.
Before leaving, Fang Qiao asked Xiao Jing to pack the pastries she had brought into a bag for her to take back, but Wang Yun refused. Even as she walked to the door, she was still pushing and pulling with Xiao Jing.
Just then, Cheng Baidong's puzzled voice suddenly came from behind.
"Wang Yun?"
Wang Yun turned around subconsciously and saw Cheng Baidong. A smile appeared on her face: "Hey, it's me. Cheng Baidong, you're off work?"
As he spoke, Wang Yun's eyes kept drifting toward Cheng Baidong's back, because behind him was a tall, handsome young man in a guard's uniform, who looked somewhat familiar.
“Yes, I just got off work.” Cheng Baidong nodded, noticing Wang Yun’s gaze, and took the initiative to introduce her: “This is Gao Ping, my bodyguard. He was the one who took me back to my hometown last year when I was injured. You should have met him back then.”
"Oh, no wonder he looked familiar. I remember he was quite skilled and could tie people up really well."
Wang Yun greeted Gao Ping first: "Hello, I'm Wang Yun. I'm a friend of Fang Qiao and Cheng Baidong."
Her smile was radiant, her eyes sparkling. Gao Ping didn't dare look into her eyes, pursed his lips somewhat shyly, and replied, "Hello."
The atmosphere became somewhat silent. Cheng Baidong glanced at the fruit in Xiaojing's hand and asked, "Are you leaving already?"
“Yes, it’s getting late. I’ve been at your place all day, and if I don’t leave now, it’ll probably be dark by the time I get back to the city.” After exchanging a few pleasantries, Wang Yun said goodbye: “Alright, I won’t talk to you anymore. Let’s chat another day. I have to go now.”
Cheng Baidong nodded: "Drive carefully on the road."
Wang Yun hummed in agreement, then nodded to Gao Ping behind Cheng Baidong before striding away.
Cheng Baidong winked at Xiao Jing: "Xiao Jing, go see your sister Wang Yun off."
"Okay!" Xiao Jing replied crisply, then picked up the bag of fruit in her hand and ran after him.
The two figures quickly disappeared around the corner at the end of the alley.
Cheng Baidong nudged Gao Ping in the stomach with his elbow: "Alright, everyone's gone, stop looking."
Gao Ping then reluctantly withdrew his gaze.
He followed Cheng Baidong into the courtyard and asked, "Brother Cheng, is Wang Yun your friend or your wife's friend?"
Cheng Baidong stopped and turned to look at his face: "What do you want to ask?"
Gao Ping scratched his head sheepishly: "I... I wanted to ask her where she's from."
"Just this one?" Cheng Baidong scanned him up and down with a scrutinizing gaze, then asked, "Anything else?"
“…Yes.” Gao Ping couldn’t stand Cheng Baidong’s gaze any longer and quickly surrendered: “I also wanted to ask where she’s from? How old is she? Is she married?”
