That night, Cheng Baidong booked a room for Xiaojing at a guesthouse near the hospital, so that she could stay there with her children, Tiantian and An'an, for the night.
He himself stayed at the hospital to take care of Chuan Chuan and Yue Yue.
Chuan Chuan and Yue Yue were very well-behaved. They would only cry a little when they were hungry or wet, and otherwise they were almost fussy. Cheng Baidong took care of everything, so Fang Qiao didn't have to worry about anything.
The next morning, Xiaojing checked out of the guesthouse and continued to help out at the hospital.
Around noon, the doctor came to check on the patients. Both the adults and children were in good condition, so after the check-up, they were told they could pack up early and be discharged that afternoon.
Things are easy to pack; as long as the child is held, everything else is a minor issue.
Cheng Baidong planned to find a public phone booth to call Gao Ping and ask him to come to his house to check if the stove had gone out, and if so, to relight it.
Without underfloor heating, the room temperature rises slowly with just a stove, so you have to warm the room several hours in advance.
Cheng Baidong's thoughtfulness was appreciated by Fang Qiao, so Cheng Baidong left first to find a public phone booth to call Gao Ping. Tian Tian wanted a lollipop and went with him, and Cheng Baidong eventually picked up An An as well, to avoid leaving her in the ward to cause trouble.
She's learning to talk lately, babbling away non-stop. If she wakes up the newborn twins, they'll cry and it'll be a hassle to soothe them.
While staying in the ward, Fang Qiao and Xiao Jing reminisced about the funny things that happened when An An was just born, comparing it with the two brothers, Chuan Chuan and Yue Yue, which was quite amusing.
The two were chatting and laughing when suddenly there was a knock on the door of the ward.
The person in the next bed wasn't there, so they must have come looking for them.
Xiao Jing got up and went to open the door, asking as she went, "Who is it?"
"It's me."
The ward door opened, and standing outside was Li Dan, whose face was as pale as a ghost.
Xiao Jing was startled by her expression and instinctively took two steps back: "Sister Li, Sister Li Dan, what brings you here?"
Li Dan was a little unsteady on her feet.
She clutched her stomach with one hand and used the other to support herself against the wall; only in this way could she barely stand.
She glanced into the ward, but all she could see was the blue curtains.
Li Dan lowered her eyelids, pursed her lips, and asked, "I need to talk to your sister-in-law about something. Where is she?"
"She..." Xiaojing hesitated, not really wanting to answer.
Fang Qiao spoke up first: "I'm here."
She pulled the bed curtains open a crack with her hand and said politely, "I'm sorry, Sister Dan, I just gave birth and I can't get out of bed yet, so I can't greet you."
Then, changing the subject, she said in a tone of surprise and envy, "Sister Dan, we seem to have been born on the same day, right? I never thought you could walk on the ground already."
Li Dan twitched her lips and said, "It's already the second day after giving birth. As long as you're not delicate and can endure the pain, you can get out of bed and walk."
Fang Qiao was just being polite, but who would have thought that she would actually take advantage of the situation and even imply that Fang Qiao shouldn't be delicate when she gets down on the ground? She really gave her too much face.
Fang Qiao was annoyed, but instead of explaining that she could walk a long time ago, she retorted in a teasy tone: "Whether you're delicate or not depends on whether someone cares for you. My Bai Dong cares about me and wouldn't want me to suffer like this. Anyway, I had a natural birth, so I don't have to worry about my intestines sticking together. It doesn't matter whether I get out of bed early or late."
"Sister Dan, you had a C-section, right? Getting out of bed early is the right thing to do. Walking around more helps with bowel movements and prevents adhesions."
Li Dan couldn't stand hearing the words "cesarean section." Whenever they were mentioned, she would think of her uterus that had been removed, and her forehead would start to throb with pain. Her already pale face would turn even paler.
Fang Qiao was impatient to talk to her anymore and said perfunctorily, "Sister Dan, I can see that you are having a hard time walking, so don't come to my ward. Go back and lie down. You can talk to me another day."
"No, I want to say it today..."
Li Dan wanted to say more, but Fang Qiao interrupted her quickly. She had a feeling that this person couldn't say anything nice, so she didn't want to waste her time listening to her nonsense.
"Xiaojing, what are you standing there for? Can't you see that Sister Dan can barely stand? Quickly help her back."
She gave Xiaojing a wink, and Xiaojing immediately understood. She stepped forward, grabbed Li Dan's wrist, and with a little force, practically forced her out.
They had only taken a couple of steps when Liu Dongliang came rushing over in a panic.
"Li Dan, you..." He paused in his reprimand when he saw Xiao Jing supporting Li Dan before continuing, "You just gave birth, your body is so weak, how can you run around like that! What if you accidentally fall?"
Her voice was several degrees gentler than before.
He had just taken Li Dan from Xiao Jing's hands when Li Dan fainted and collapsed on top of him.
Liu Dongliang helped Li Dan up, but instead of leaving, he took the time to apologize to Xiao Jing: "I'm sorry for causing you trouble."
Xiao Jing waved her hand: "It's okay, it's no trouble at all."
Liu Dongliang paused for a moment, then said, "Did she say anything unpleasant just now? You know, she was desperately hoping for a son, but she gave birth to a daughter instead, which has made her mentally unstable..."
His words carried a probing tone, which Xiaojing didn't catch. She just felt that his words were a bit strange, so she honestly replied, "What was she trying to say? But my sister-in-law saw that her face was very pale, so she asked me to take her home."
"It's good that they didn't say anything." Liu Dongliang visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
