Fang Qiao chuckled and asked, "So, what do you want to eat?"
The little Vermilion Bird excitedly raised its wings: "I want to eat dumplings."
Fang Qiao refused without hesitation: "Dumplings won't do, it's too much trouble. Besides, with your appetite, you won't be full without at least fifty dumplings, plus the rest of the family, it would take at least two hundred dumplings to make. Even if we start making them now, it would take at least two hours before we can eat."
Little Vermilion Bird lowered her eyes and whimpered pitifully, "Is it really not possible?"
Fang Qiao shook her head: "No, let's choose another one."
"Whatever then." The little Vermilion Bird hung its head dejectedly, looking completely listless.
Fang Qiao couldn't help but laugh, patted her little bird head, and said, "Then let's have noodles with meat broth. There's still a little bit of chicken left from yesterday's New Year's Eve dinner."
Little Vermilion Bird nodded: "That's fine too."

After all, the only New Year's gift her older sister, Fang Xue, brought home was a can of luncheon meat and two packets of candy.
Fang Qiao arrived at the perfect time. When she entered, Fang Xue and her brother-in-law Zhang Jun were already there, chatting with Fang Lu.
When Fang Qiao entered, they merely glanced at her without reacting. It was Xiao Longtou who rushed out to greet her, beaming with joy as he wished her a Happy New Year: "Happy New Year, Aunt and Uncle!"
When kids aren't being naughty, they're actually quite cute.
Seeing that he was exceptionally polite today, Fang Qiao smiled and responded, taking out a pre-prepared red envelope from her pocket and handing it to him: "Happy New Year, Xiao Long."
