Chapter 40 Sneaky

Cheng Baidong is a meticulous person. Before being discharged from the hospital, he arranged everything in great detail.

After completing the discharge procedures, he loaded all his luggage into the car in advance and asked Fang Qiao to wait in the ward for a while while he went out to take care of some things.

When Fang Qiao asked him what he was doing, he remained mysterious and unwilling to say.

After waiting for about half an hour, Cheng Baidong finally returned, carrying a large black bag that was stuffed full.

He locked the ward door as soon as he came in. Fang Qiao found it amusing: "Why are you acting so suspiciously? Like you've been doing something wrong."

"You've definitely done something wrong!" Cheng Baidong walked up to Fang Qiao, unzipped the large black bag, and showed it to her: "Take a look at this."

Fang Qiao looked down and her eyes widened in surprise.

The large black bag was full of milk powder sold in the hospital's own store, at least a dozen packs of 400 grams each.

"Isn't the hospital rationing baby formula?" Fang Qiao looked at him in disbelief. "Where did you get so much?"

“Some families have babies but don’t need to buy formula. I’ll add two yuan to each bag of formula and let them buy it from our own store,” Cheng Baidong explained.

"Hey! That's a great idea! Bai Dong, you're really quick-witted!"

"It was a coincidence. When I went out, I happened to see the family members in the next ward telling the nurses that they didn't want to buy milk powder. Suddenly, the idea flashed into my mind." Cheng Baidong didn't take credit for it.

He is An'an's father, and it is his responsibility to find a way to provide food for his daughter. It is an obligation, so why should he claim credit?

“I went to all the wards and collected a total of thirteen bags. I read the feeding instructions on the back of the formula. Newborns drink very little, only about 30 ml per feeding, but a one-month-old baby needs to drink 90 ml per feeding, every three hours, six or seven times a day. As the baby grows bigger, he drinks more and more. This formula will only last the baby for three months at most. I will figure out a way after that.”

When she had just given birth, the baby was crying loudly on her chest because of hunger, and Fang Qiao started to worry about it from that moment on.

Because her breast milk was insufficient in her previous life, An'an was born prematurely and was already weak. As a result, she was not getting enough to eat every day, and malnutrition caused her to not gain weight for half a month after birth.

Later, her An'an was taken away by Huang Yan. Because she was weak, she couldn't survive. Fang Qiao hated herself many times afterward, wondering why she couldn't have fed An'an better and made her stronger. Perhaps then, this wouldn't have happened.

So from the moment An'an lay on her chest crying from hunger, Fang Qiao's worst fears came true, and she began to feel anxious.

I worry that I won't have enough breast milk for An'an to eat, and I'm afraid that An'an will suffer from malnutrition and not gain weight.

She told Cheng Baidong about her concerns, and Cheng Baidong immediately said that with him there was no need to worry about the milk powder.

Cheng Baidong is always reliable. He always keeps his word and will do his best to fulfill his promises, no matter how difficult it may be. Fang Qiao was not worried that he would fail to do so. She just did not expect that he would complete his promise so quickly in just half a day.

Fang Qiao was moved to tears and buried her face in Cheng Baidong's arms, saying, "Baidong, you're so good to me."

Cheng Baidong's first reaction was to wipe away Fang Qiao's tears and comfort her, "Don't cry. Women shouldn't cry during postpartum confinement; it's bad for their eyes."

"Okay, I won't cry anymore." Fang Qiao wiped her tears from her eyes and smiled.

"That's more like it. Let's go home."

The jeep was parked at the entrance of the hospital building. Cheng Baidong first loaded the milk powder into the car, and then came back to pick up Fang Qiao.

Cheng Baidong thoughtfully laid out a soft and thick blanket on the back seat of the car, so Fang Qiao could lie down on it with her child without worrying about being exposed to the cold wind.

Cheng Baidong started the car and carefully controlled its balance with his spiritual energy, repeating his previous trick to avoid bumps.

Fang Qiao was probably too comfortable, because she fell asleep shortly after the car started.

When I woke up again, I could hear Wang Yun's voice coming from outside the window.

"You're discharged so soon? I was planning to visit Xiao Qiao at the hospital tomorrow."

Fang Qiao could not hear clearly through the car window.

As Fang Qiao sat up, she looked out the car window and realized that the car was parked in front of the grocery store at the east end of the town.

Cheng Baidong stood at the entrance of the grocery store talking to Wang Yun, holding half a box of frozen pears in his hands.

In winter, it's incredibly rare to find fruit. It's sold out in less than half a day at most. Cheng Baidong parked his car because he didn't want to miss it. Who knows if there will still be any left when he comes back home?

Meeting Wang Yun was purely accidental.

Whether it was an accident or a coincidence, Fang Qiao was overjoyed. She rolled down the car window and waved to Wang Yun: "Xiao Yun, have you finished your business? Do you want to take a ride back with us?"

"Yes, yes, yes!" Wang Yun agreed repeatedly.

When Cheng Baidong turned around, he saw Fang Qiao had rolled down the window. His eyes widened, and he quickly went up to knock on the window: "It's so windy outside, how dare you open the window? Be careful not to catch a cold and have a headache later."

“I’m wearing a hat,” Fang Qiao explained.

When she was discharged from the hospital, she was fully covered up, wearing a hat, scarf, and thick cotton-padded coat, and she didn't take them off even after getting into the car.

"Wearing a hat isn't acceptable either. Roll up the window right now." Cheng Baidong's stern tone concealed deep concern.

"Okay, okay." Fang Qiao smiled ingratiatingly at him, and before rolling up the window, she called out to Wang Yun again, "Xiao Yun, get in the car quickly."

"Coming, coming, I'm coming right now."

Wang Yun said to the other educated youth who were traveling with her, "I'm leaving first," and then turned around and ran to get on the bus.
