Lu Xiao paused, his ears turning red, but he stiffened his neck and refused to admit it: "Nonsense, I was just trying to maintain family harmony."
Su Tang suppressed her laughter and leaned close to his ear: "Oh? Then why is Deputy Captain Lu blushing?"
A warm breath brushed past his ears, and Lu Xiao stiffened slightly. He clasped her hand tightly and strode forward: "Hurry up, or the cafeteria will run out of food if you dawdle any longer."
Looking at his slightly hurried back, Su Tang smiled with her eyebrows curved. This guy is quite funny.
The next morning, the two of them took the army vehicle to the hospital where Lu Xiao was. The vehicle wobbled along for over three hours before arriving.
The hospital is located halfway up the mountain. The red brick walls are painted white. A wooden sign with the words "Red Star Military Region Hospital" hangs at the door. It looks more imposing than where Su Tang had stayed before, but the equipment doesn't look much new.
The exam was scheduled for the afternoon, so Lu Xiao took her to the dormitory first. It was called a dormitory, but it was actually just a small room of about ten square meters, with a wooden bed, a paint-chipped desk, and a wooden cabinet with a missing leg in the corner. Fortunately, it was kept relatively clean.
"I'm sorry to trouble you. You have to live here for the time being. I'll find a better room once things settle down." Lu Xiao touched the peeling dust on the wall and frowned.
Su Tang didn't care. He put down his luggage and looked around: "It's pretty good. It's much better than when I first went to the countryside."
She took out a piece of cloth from her bag and wiped the desk clean in a few strokes. "You go do your thing. I'll get ready myself."
Lu Xiao was about to say something when the whistle in his pocket blew, signaling the group to gather. He could only say, "Don't be nervous," and hurried out.
The afternoon exam consisted of a written test and a practical exam. The written exam covered basic theory, which was child's play for Su Tang, who had eight years of clinical experience. She wrote quickly and handed in her paper in less than half an hour, earning the invigilator's glare.
The practical exercise involved suturing a simulated patient's wound. While the other students beside her were shaking with needle and thread, Su Tang remained remarkably calm. Remembering the aseptic technique she'd learned in her modern school, she first wiped the area around the wound three times with an alcohol swab, then used a pair of tweezers pre-boiled to hold the needle and thread, her technique incredibly deft.
The stitches were thin and even, with almost the same spacing, which made the doctors watching nearby nod their heads.
The examiner, Director Zhang, was a man in his fifties. He put on his reading glasses and looked closely for a long time. Then he looked up and asked, "Who did you learn this suturing technique from?"
Su Tang's heart skipped a beat, and fearing being exposed, he mumbled, "I learned this from an old doctor in the countryside, and I've also thought about it myself."
Director Zhang didn't ask any more questions, but just nodded: "Not bad, better than many of the young doctors here."
After finishing the exam, Su Tang felt relieved. Just as she was about to go find Lu Xiao, she saw two young women in white coats whispering not far away, glancing at her from time to time.
"Have you heard? This girl is Deputy Headmaster Lu's girlfriend, and she got the exam through the backdoor."
"Look at her, she's so delicate and tender, how can she be a doctor? I guess she's just here to get by."
The voice was neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough for Su Tang to hear. She frowned slightly, ignored it, and turned to walk back to the dormitory. She had just arrived and was being targeted. It seemed that the days ahead would be uneasy.
Sure enough, when the results came out the next day, Su Tang got first place, but no one notified her to go to work.
Lu Xiao went to see Director Zhang to ask about the situation, and when he came back he looked unhappy.
"What's wrong?" Su Tang handed him a glass of water.
Lu Xiao took a sip and said in a deep voice, "Someone said that you don't have enough qualifications and your previous work certificates are incomplete. They want you to review them again."
Su Tang was stunned for a moment, then understood. This wasn't some kind of review; it was clearly someone who didn't want her to stay. She'd heard before she arrived that the hospital's surgery department was short of a lead surgeon, and she was afraid someone might see her as competition.
"Don't worry," Lu Xiao held her hand, "I'll talk to the dean, it will be fine."
Su Tang shook his head: "No, gold will always shine. The more they act like this, the more I want to stay."
A hint of determination flashed in her eyes. She had endured eight years of hardship in modern times, so why should she be afraid of such a small obstacle?
As he was speaking, Director Zhang pushed the door open and came in, holding a document in his hand. "Su Tang, right? The dean looked at your grades and asked you to report to the surgery department first, on a one-month probationary period."
Su Tang's eyes lit up, and just as he was about to say thank you, he saw Director Zhang sigh: "But you also know that the situation in the hospital is complicated, and some people are gossipy. Please bear with them."
Su Tang nodded: "I understand, thank you."
After Director Zhang left, Lu Xiao breathed a sigh of relief: "I told you it's okay."
Su Tang smiled, but knew in her heart that this was just the beginning. She packed up her white coat and headed for the surgery department. In the corridor, the two women from earlier saw her, their eyes filled with surprise and dissatisfaction. Su Tang straightened her back and walked past them without looking away.
No matter how many obstacles there are, she has the confidence to stand firm. After all, her skills are not exaggerated.
...I'm afraid it's too late, so I'll put half of it up first and revise it at midnight~
