Chapter 63: Demonic Pattern Fragments (Part 2)

The room was pitch black, and Ivan didn't dare turn on the lights for fear of attracting attention. Instead, he quietly pulled a pen-like object from his trouser pocket, pressed the tip of it, and placed it on the ground. It was a portable infrared scanning device that could scan every corner of the room and reveal any hidden objects.

The scan results were sent to Ivan's computer. He studied them carefully for a while and could find very little. Apart from some old clothes and shoes, there was nothing else. He quickly focused his attention on a rectangular object under Auckland's bed. It was the only thing that might be valuable.

A tattered iron box was dug out from under the bed in the bedroom. It was protected only by a rusty copper lock. It looked no different from garbage.

Alvin took a deep breath, hid the tattered iron box under his clothes, and then quietly left the house.

When he returned to the main house, there was no one in the living room. Only a few cleaning robots were cleaning the room. Alvin quickly returned to the guest room on the second floor, locked the door, and began to find a way to pry open the iron box.

There was a miniature laser cutting machine in his luggage. He took it out, broke the copper lock, and successfully opened the tattered iron box.

There were many dirty things in the iron box, such as plastic dolls, parts of assembled robots, and even a yellow handkerchief.

Ivan threw the rubbish aside with disdain, then pulled out a yellowed book from the bottom of the iron box. He used a detector to test it, confirming the material composition of the book. It was a very precious paper with a history of thousands of years.

After thousands of years of evolution, the interstellar world has entered a paperless, high-tech electronic age. Paper has become a luxury, and all books can only be found in the federal museum on the capital planet. No one would have thought that such a valuable "antique" would be in the hands of a worthless person like Auckland. However, due to poor protection, the book has turned yellow and black, and even has many insect bites and stains, making it look nothing like a priceless treasure.

No one knows that Auckland's maternal grandfather's family was once a prosperous heraldry family a thousand years ago. It was called the Berkeley family. Several top heraldry masters who have left their names in history are from the Berkeley family.

It was just that each generation was inferior to the previous one, and by the time of Joseph Berkeley, it was completely in decline. Joseph Berkeley was a combat master, with no talent for manipulating mental power. He later gave birth to a daughter with a mental power level of only B. Although she was not particularly outstanding, she was still a herald master.

Because Lisa's father was still in power with General Williams, and because of Lisa's beauty and identity as a herald, Edmund Campbell's father arranged a marriage for his son.

At first, the two of them had a good life. Edmund was particularly attracted to Lisa's gentle and charming temperament. However, everything changed after Joseph died in battle and Edmund's father passed away. After inheriting the family business, Edmund only knew how to enjoy himself and squander money. He became passionately involved with the socialite Myrna, spending lavishly on her, and finally succeeded in turning the Campbell family into a sham.

After Alvin showed outstanding mental talent, his father focused on training him as a herald master and invited several herald masters to teach him personally.

The Fifth Army's intelligence agency is the best except for the First Army. General Percy got the news from somewhere that the Berkeley family has an extremely precious magic pattern fragment. The Berkeley family was able to become so famous because of this heirloom.

After repeatedly confirming and corroborating the news, Arnold Percy began to investigate the affairs of the Berkeley family. Once he got this treasure, he could train countless top heralds, greatly enhancing the strength of the Fifth Army and giving him an advantage in the subsequent election of the head of state of the federation.

However, he sent people to search the Berkeley family's ancestral home, but they didn't find the thing. Finally, they found that Joseph had given something to Lisa after his death in battle, but at that time, Lisa was already dead, leaving behind only a son, who had no talent and was simply a waste.

Lisa and her son had always lived with the Campbell family and had never left, so the heirloom was likely still with the Campbell family. It was at that time that Myrna was trying every possible way to establish a relationship with the Campbell family. In order to obtain the treasure without anyone noticing, Arnold Percy agreed to the marriage between Ivan and George.

After all this effort, Alvin finally had this treasure, passed down through the ages, in his hands. He felt a mixture of emotions. The text within this ancient book was ancient, and unless a scholar of ancient texts could decipher it, the contents would be impossible to understand. Furthermore, the book was severely damaged, with several areas where the magic patterns were missing.

Is it really useful to take something like this back?

Just then, his computer buzzed, and someone initiated a communication request. He hurriedly put all the messy things back into the iron box and stuffed it under the bed, only carefully hiding the ancient book under the pillow, and then answered the call.

"Have you found it?" The call came from Ivan's father, Arnold Percy, and the first thing he said was to ask about the whereabouts of the thing.

"Found it." Alvin took out the ancient book from under the pillow and showed it to his father.

"Very good, you can come back tomorrow."

"Yes, Father."

After finishing the call, Alvin carefully wrapped the ancient books with his clothes and put them in his luggage, ready to take them home.

As for the tattered iron box, Alvin threw it into the trash can. Tomorrow morning, a cleaning robot will come in to pick up the trash and destroy it. Thanks to this trash-like iron box, the Campbell family will never know what they missed.

*******

Auckland didn't know that the "legacy" left to him by his mother had been stolen, but even if he knew, he probably wouldn't care. After all, the things recorded in the book were all his leftovers.

Oakland was busy trying to coax the little guy to sleep. The little furball, now physically stronger, had even more energy. He used to fall asleep after a short walk, a good meal, and a little coaxing. But now, the little guy was already playing late into the night, playing ball-tossing, claw-sharpening, and peek-a-boo. Oakland had already played several rounds with him, but he hadn't the slightest intention of falling asleep.

What's worse is that the weather has been a bit hot recently, and the little guy has started to shed hair. There are often small white fluffs floating in the room, which makes the little guy even more excited to chase the fluff everywhere, and then shed more hair...

"My little ancestor, when are you going to sleep..." Auckland was so sleepy that he couldn't even open his eyes.

"Awoo, awoo, awoo, awoo!" The little fur ball jumped onto Auckland's head with a heroic and confident look, making a series of meaningless calls.

In desperation, Oakland could only try to send a message to Hall, hoping that he was still awake...

"What's the matter?" Hall's handsome face appeared in the screen again.

Auckland immediately told the story of the little fur ball. For some reason, he just refused to go to sleep and was extremely excited.

Hall looked at the howling little fur ball lying on top of Auckland's head, and the corners of his mouth twitched twice. "I know. I'll be right over."

"Hey...actually I..." However, before Auckland could finish his words, Hall hung up the phone, leaving him speechless.

Is it really necessary to go there in person at this late hour? Wouldn't it be enough to just tell him what happened to the little guy?

Oakland took the little fur ball off the top of his head and scratched his little chin. "You are such a troublesome little thing."

The author has something to say: 【Small Theater】

Joey: My hair is falling off~ It's itchy~

Hall: Humph, I'm itchy too!

Auckland: (⊙﹏⊙) What should I do then?

Author: It’s time to comb your hair…
