Chapter 28 An Extraordinary Night

After greeting most of the people present, Lian Han silently made a note of them and waited for the next segment.

The wine glass in his hand was suddenly bumped, and Lian Han looked at the newcomer. "Young Master Ming, is there something you need?"

"Yes. Let me remind you, Miss, do not summon your character card later, nor any other cards. Simply put, you cannot use it."

Lian Han frowned. "Make a move? What will happen here?"

“This was something Miss couldn’t have stopped before it happened. After it happened, the Ling family will handle it themselves. She’s still just a child; the Ling family doesn’t need your protection, and you don’t need to draw attention to yourself.” The young man was polite, but his eyes seemed to see through everything.

“Young Master Ming, it’s very annoying to only say half of what you mean.”

"Believe me, if you summon Liz today, the trouble will be even greater. Although His Majesty's ban card has a time limit, it cannot be lifted by just anyone, and those sealed by it cannot appear in the public eye too early."

Looking into the young man's azure eyes, Lian Han could only come to one conclusion—he meant no harm.

"I've written it down."

"Then you should listen to that." Ming Yu smiled and downed the wine in his glass in one gulp. "Happy birthday."

"Thank you." Seeing Ling Xin walking towards her, Lian Han stepped forward.

"Big brother."

Ling Xin glanced at the glass in her hand, confirmed it was juice, and asked, "What did Ming Yu just say?"

"We met on the starship before, so we know each other and chatted for a bit. It wasn't anything serious. Are you done with your work, brother?"

"That's about it. I'll be free when Auntie comes back. Xiaoze is quite lively, you can spend more time with him. But if he bullies you, you can go to Auntie or Xiaoyue."

Having just shaken off a group of guests, Ling Ze, who was on his way to find his sister, said, "Big brother, how could I possibly bully her?"

This is also his sister. The Ling family only has this one girl; they treat her like a princess!

Ling Xin added, "And don't even think about inciting her to go crazy with you."

"How am I crazy?" Ling Ze was even more displeased. "It's because you're old, brother, that you've lost your childlike wonder."

Ling Xin, who is still six months away from turning 25, laughed, "Yeah. Unlike Xiao Ze, who still needs to be reminded to do his holiday homework."

Ling Ze's face immediately darkened. His mother had said to let it go, so why did he bring it up? What about his image in front of his sister?

Lian Han found it amusing to watch the two bicker. Her impression of the eldest brother of the Ling family had always been that he was gentle and kind, so it was rare to see him bicker with someone, and so shrewdly at it.

"I've checked it all, but I didn't find anything unusual," said Old Man Xing.

[No? He's lying to me?]

[Not necessarily. In this matter, deceiving you would do him no good. And the absence of unusual activity doesn't mean nothing will change.]

"I'll go get a glass of juice." Lian Han greeted his two older brothers with a smile, then asked, "[What do you mean?]"

[More than ten years ago, there was a major incident.] Old Xing's tone was quite complicated. [It was the founding day of the Federation, a grand ceremony watched by the entire galaxy. All the distinguished guests had undergone the most sophisticated instrument checks, but an accident still occurred.]

[The problem lies with the people attending the ceremony?] Lian Han poured the unidentified red juice into his glass, frowning.

[That's correct. However, the Ming family brat said you don't need to get involved, so this should just be a minor skirmish. You should stay out of it.]

[It's fine to be outstanding, but if you shine too brightly and overshadow everyone else, they can become the final straw that breaks the camel's back when you face a crisis.]

[I understand.] Lian Han paused for a moment. [Old man, no matter what you've been through, you have me now.]

The girl looked young, but her tone was extremely firm. Old Xing's heavy mood, which had been weighing on him as he recalled certain events, suddenly vanished. "[Old man, I'm still waiting for you to avenge me. Don't get killed before then. If another remnant soul enters the system, I really will throw you out.]"

Lian Han: ...Can't you say something good about her? You old geezer!

I feel like Xiaoye has recovered quite well.

[…Huh? Did I just say something? I don’t remember.]

Lian Han rolled her eyes at him twice.

Ming Yu suddenly walked to her side. Lian Han looked up and saw the young man pointing to Lian Han's right rear side.

The girl was wearing an expensive dress; she was a young lady from the Wen family.

But now, the senses she gave Lian Han were no longer human; the aura was both familiar and repulsive.

Seeing the vertical pupils that had suddenly appeared in her eyes, which were somewhat similar to Liz's, Lian Han frowned and was pulled back by Ming Yu.

At the same time, several figures at the banquet froze, their normal pupils turning into inhuman vertical pupils, and their exquisite makeup gaining an eerie dark blue hue.

"Young Master Ling, something seems amiss." In a moment of surprise, Ming Yu had already brought Lian Han to Ling Xin's side.

"Xiao Ze, go find your aunt." Ling Xin's expression turned serious as she noticed the change.

Watching Ling Ze leave, Ling Xin looked at her younger sister, "Xiao Han, shall I see you out first?"

“No.” The girl looked at him calmly. “I have the ability to protect myself, and I also have my own reason and judgment. I won’t get in the way.”

She can refrain from taking action, but it's impossible for her to stay out of trouble when the Ling family encounters problems.

Since she had already said that, and considering the girl's previous fighting prowess, Ling Xin relented, "Okay. But you can only watch."

“I will stay with Miss Lian,” Ming Yu said.

Ling Xin glanced at him, but ultimately didn't send him away. Since he'd already said that, at least he wouldn't lay a hand on her sister. Besides, he had other things to do.

Watching quietly as several mutated individuals suddenly attacked and injured people, everyone panicked but immediately retreated, which gave Lian Han a sense of practice.

"Does this happen often?"

"I suppose so. Since His Majesty Juecheng passed away, similar situations have occurred eight or nine times a year. However, this is the first time it has touched a nerve with the Ling family."

Lian Han: "Eight or nine times a year? Can't we solve the problem at its source?"

“No. Their disguises—except for His Majesty who died young, even the most sophisticated instruments couldn’t detect them.”

Lian Han: ...

[However, His Majesty did not notice anything unusual just now.]

Old Xing became agitated. "[I can tell them apart because of the cards! But I don't have any cards to use right now!]"

[What card is so powerful?]

[Let's talk about it when you reach a higher level.]

The old man was keeping everyone in suspense. Lian Han muttered to himself, then asked, "What exactly are all these things?"

Ming Yu stared straight at Lian Han, his gaze unfathomable. "The Zerg."

Lian Han: ? ? ?

Is that thing with vertical pupils and heavy makeup a Zerg? The inferior, ugly, greedy, and terrifyingly powerful Zerg?

[He's not lying to you. This thing is a type of Zerg.]

Lian Han silently looked at the figures attacking humans, feeling his worldview crumbling...
