Chapter 30 Frog Beast (I)
Mu Baixing stopped the words that were about to come out of his mouth and wanted to sign a new purchase contract with Mingyu.
He could clearly hear the howling of the star beasts outside the docking bay, which was noticeably closer than before. The sounds, muffled by the base's outer walls, were faintly mingled with tiny crackling noises, as if metal objects were colliding and shattering, being crushed to dust.
Mu Baixing: "Are you ready?"
Mingyu, who was sitting on the chair: ""
He had just signed the contract and had just looked at the general structure of the vertical engine. He hadn't yet seen the rear engine compartment or entered the cab to check the wiring. Before he could say anything, Mu Baixing said, "Log out of the mining area. See you next time..."
Suddenly, a loud explosion was heard from somewhere in the base.
The lights in the parking bay suddenly went out, the ground shook, and sank, but quickly stopped.
Ming Yu suddenly stood up from his chair. His Star Network operation panel suddenly popped up, and a huge red triangle error message appeared on the screen:
"The StarNet's regular line signal has been lost, and data block link interaction has been interrupted. Please wait in the current module group. Please be patient and wait for the line to be repaired."
"beep--"
An alarm suddenly sounded from the loudspeaker on top of the parking bay, and the mechanical sound of the tablet rang out in every corner of the base.
"The base's underground foundation has collapsed, the energy supply device has been damaged, and the backup energy has failed to activate. All users, please log out of the mining area module group—"
"repeat."
"The base's energy supply device is damaged, and the backup energy has failed to start. All users, please log out of the mining area module group—"
All defense facilities have stopped working along with the light.
Mingyu had a bad feeling in his heart and suddenly turned his head to look at Mu Baixing.
In the dim light emitted by the light screen, he saw Mu Baixing looking at him, with a subtle but not negligible look of astonishment on his face, as if he did not realize the urgency of the situation.
Mingyu:?
Mingyu: "How..."
"Bang!——"
From somewhere outside the base, another earth-shaking roar was heard.
Continuous explosions came from far away and got closer. The walls groaned as if their steel structures were about to be torn apart. The floor beneath his feet began to shake and tremble again. Mingyu felt as if he was on a small boat sailing into a stormy sea, tossing himself left and right.
Mu Baixing came back to his senses, supported Mingyu's elbow to help him stand steadily, turned on the communication bracelet to illuminate it, and said, "Follow me closely."
Mingyu didn’t know what was happening outside the base, but he knew without thinking that it was not a good thing.
The man walked steadily and quickly on the shaking ground. He held Mingyu's wrist and led him out of the parking cabin and into the preparation room further inside the base. He opened the compartment in the wall and took out a set of powered exoskeleton equipment from it.
"Put it on." Mu Baixing threw the arm skeleton to Mingyu.
This was a lightweight exoskeleton, at least a Class B one. The arm guards felt much lighter than they looked. Mingyu was not unfamiliar with putting it on. He had already covered this part of his combat training, having completed several basic drills.
Mu Baixing squatted on one knee and said simply: "Lift your leg."
He held Mingyu's ankle and let Mingyu step into the footwear device, and helped him fasten the buckles from the ankle, calf, above the knee, to the thigh.
Mingyu's leg muscles subconsciously tensed under Mu Baixing's touch.
Mingyu: "You..."
"Level 9 Taigang plus booster, defense B+, speed A, under the right wrist is a pop-up combat dagger, on the left wall is an A-level small arm-launched cannon with an auxiliary aiming system." Mu Baixing's fingers left Mingyu's leg and stood up. "Have you used it?"
"I've only ever played shooting games."
The light from the illuminator was reflected in the designer's eyes, and he was deeply afraid of the unknown, but he tried his best to remain calm.
Mu Boxing: "It's not much different from a shooting game."
Mingyu nodded. He moved his arms, quickly adjusting to the exoskeleton's dynamics. His fingers reached for the laser weapon covering his left upper arm and shoulder, and released the safety buckle.
A shooting assist screen popped up in front of his right eye. The world before him was divided into precise coordinates by horizontal and vertical grids. A red aiming dot appeared in the center of the screen, moving as Mingyu turned his arm.
Mu Baixing pulled out an arm-length laser gun from the compartment and said, "Let's go."
He opened the door to the outside, and the barrier leading to the public passage was removed. Mingyu was the first to hear the chaotic noise and shouting outside.
"There's a herd of copper frogs! Run! Run!"
There weren't many people in the mining area, but the interconnected passages amplified the shouting countless levels, making the chaotic footsteps sound like hundreds of thousands of people running wildly, but no one could be seen responding in the empty passages.
The shaking of the earth stopped again, and several narrow cracks appeared on the ground inside the passage, but the overall structure was not damaged and no fractures occurred.
Mu Baixing: "I'll take you to the central hall at the innermost part of the base."
"If even the central hall is truly invaded, this exoskeleton will hold out for a while. If anything happens, press the emergency communication button. I'll be back as soon as I receive the notification."
Mingyu didn't say anything. He looked nervous. He had never thought he would encounter such a thing.
The mining base was invaded by star beasts... just like the holiday home in the primitive tourist area of the star was besieged by lions and tigers. It was both absurd and terrifying.
But Mingyu's voice remained steady: "Where are you going?"
"Defense Agency." Mu Baixing used the white light of his flashlight to photograph the sign on the wall and quickly identified the path he wanted to take at the fork in the road. "There's a manual generator over there. If necessary, we can emergency launch and land the battleship... on the left."
He pulled Mingyu into the passage on the left.
The base without lights was shrouded in darkness that seemed impenetrable to the light of a flashlight.
The noises outside the wall grew increasingly terrifying, a chaotic mix of loud noises, screams, and footsteps. In a state of intense tension, Mingyu unconsciously released his mental energy, trying to comprehend the situation. A thin, colorless thread of mental energy brushed past Mu Baixing's cheek and extended outward into the passage. The man frowned and turned his head to look to the side.
He felt something passing by, non-threatening, as light as a feather.
It was the same feeling I had felt for a moment in the cockpit of the Star Navigation Competition.
It seems to come from people around me.
Mu Baixing looked at Mingyu.
Under the flashlight, the designer's face was pale, his eyes slightly widened, as if he had seen something extremely terrifying through the ceiling of the passage. The next second, he suddenly grabbed Mu Boxing's wrist and leaped back.
“Buzz——”
