Chapter 39: Finding a Shortcut

"Don't worry, Mom, we will get this done."

Gu Xiuwen pressed his brother's shoulders and said, "Just rest assured and recuperate at home. With Wen'er here, your brother will be well."

Gu Xiuwu was a thorn in the flesh. When he wanted to protect someone, no one could say a bad word. But they couldn't do a good deed and then let the villagers be ungrateful because of what they said.

"Mother believes in you."

Shen Ningsi handed over the rice paper that had been prepared long ago, "I have written down all the methods needed to grow potatoes. Wen'er, you can read it word for word, and there will be no problems."

Gu Xiuwen took the rice paper and his eyes fell on the red marks on Shen Ningsi's fingertips. He pursed his lips and said nothing.

After dragging Gu Xiuwu out of the room, Gu Xiuwen's face darkened. "What were you trying to say just now? Mother painstakingly wrote so many things, wasn't it just for us to do things well?"

"Brother!" Gu Xiuwu's face flushed. "I don't want to continue making trouble. Please don't think I'm crazy, okay?"

He thought about it and felt that Gu Xiuwen's worries were indeed not unreasonable.

Gu Xiuwu muttered, "I just feel bad for Mom who endured the pain and wrote a whole page, but no one knows how much she paid."

He then turned his attention to Gu Xiuwen, "And you, brother, are you planning to just take the credit for mother's work?"

“…”

"I don't know what's going on in your head?"

Gu Xiuwu was furious. "Did I hit the nail on the head? I was just thinking about how to make it up to my mother. What else could I be thinking about?"

Looking at Gu Xiuwen's back without even turning his head, Gu Xiuwu stomped his feet in anger but still chased after him.

This was the first time his mother had assigned them a task, so Gu Xiuwu would of course do his best to make it a success!

While waiting for the two brothers to appear at the door, the villagers who had been smiling when they saw them seemed like different people, and there was no kindness in their eyes anymore when they looked at them.

"You two brothers are no longer at home to take care of Madam Gu. Has Madam Gu recovered?"

Someone eagerly asked, "It shouldn't be difficult for Madam Gu to explain the planting methods to us. You can't really be beaten so badly by Wang Qiang that you can't get out of the fields, right?"

The two of them heard the same words when they went to the market today, but at that time these people had not yet chased them to their doorstep.

Gu Xiuwen held his brother down and took a step forward. "My mother was naturally injured by Wang Qiang. Could I, Gu Xiuwen, maliciously curse her?"

As soon as these words were spoken, some women began to sob.

"What should I do? I even specially gathered together a lot of nourishing things for Madam Gu, but now it seems like they are of no use at all!"

"God, life was just about to get easier, but here comes a disaster like Wang Qiang!"

No one blamed Shen Ningsi for the untimely injury, which finally made Gu Xiuwen's complexion improve a little. He took out the rice paper that Shen Ningsi had written on.

"My mother was seriously ill and on her deathbed, but she still urged me to teach everyone how to grow potatoes. She talked to me intermittently for a whole day before I finished writing the content."

There is no way to admit that these things were written by Shen Ningsi, but you can always say that the content came from Shen Ningsi's mouth!

Gu Xiuwu's face flashed with embarrassment. It turned out his brother wasn't going to take credit for Mother's work. He rolled his eyes and said loudly, "Even when Mother was seriously ill, she still remembered to help everyone, and you actually wanted her to drag her sick body to explain planting methods to you."

As he spoke, he pinched his legs hard, and tears immediately gathered in his eyes.

You have to know that the reputation of Gu Xiuwu, the little bully, has spread throughout Wanning Village. They have only seen Gu Xiuwu bullying others, but they have never seen this little lion shed tears.

"Mom's voice is so soft that even my brother and I can barely hear her voice by leaning close to her. If so many of you go in, not only will she be scared, but you won't be able to hear anything at all. Do you really want to force her to death before you can feel at ease?"

Gu Xiuwu was also moved by his true feelings when he spoke. Like these people, he used to think that Shen Ningsi was not a good person. Gu Xiuwu never tried to understand his mother. His mother's kindness was always used on people who were not worthy.

"If you want to blame someone, you should blame Wang Qiang and the Wang family. They are the ones who made my mother what she is now! It's not like my mother wanted to do this!"

Gu Xiuwen stood quietly before Gu Xiuwu, saying nothing. He was a mature young man, and many villagers said he was precocious. But precisely because of this, if these words came out of his mouth, they would inevitably be disbelieved.

But my younger brother was different. Who would suspect that someone with a quick temper and a lot of loose talk would encourage them to hate local tycoons like the Wang family?

Seeing the thoughtful expressions in the villagers' eyes, Gu Xiuwen knew it was almost time.

He patted Gu Xiuwu's shoulder and said, "Alright, brother, have you forgotten what mother said? She has already touched upon the interests of these local rich people, so it's only natural that she would be hated by others. From now on, the two of us should stay by her side and protect her."

"You can't say that!" someone shouted, "Do you two boys think you can beat an adult?"

Gu Xiuwen sighed, "Mom said that at worst, we won't look for other food anymore. We'll just have potatoes for everyone to eat. That way, no one will want to touch Mom anymore."

"Brother Wen means that Madam Gu can find other food?"

Gu Xiuwen quickly covered his mouth and said, "No, uncle, you heard wrongly. I didn't say anything. Please don't tell anyone else. Mother told me because she believed me."

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone understood!

Mrs. Gu has more good stuff!

"Brother Wen, don't worry, uncle won't tell anyone else. You two brothers just take good care of Madam Gu, and you don't have to worry about anything else."

Gu Xiuwen lowered his eyes and rolled his eyes, "Thank you very much, uncle."

He took a piece of rice paper and read it to them verbatim. Unlike Shen Ningsi, Gu Xiuwen did not answer any of their questions. He just kept repeating, "I don't know. I'll ask Mom after she wakes up."

When Fan Xing heard the news and rushed to the house, he saw everyone looking dejected.

Zhao Xianxing was clearly a military commander, but his demeanor was even more romantic than Fan Xing's. He shook his head, fanning himself with his folding fan. "Master Fan, you're a man who's seen the world in the capital, but why didn't you consider that pushing the people too far could lead to unrest?"

Gu Xiuwen saw the approaching people from afar and immediately said, "Everyone please disperse. I really can't answer your questions."
