Chapter 43: Facing the Momentum

Shen Ningsi said as he shook his body slightly.

She subconsciously reached out to hold the door frame, but a pair of hot hands supported her.

She lowered her eyes and met Gu Xiuwen's worried eyes.

“Don’t worry.” Shen Ningsi whispered.

The appearance of Gu Xiuwen made her think of how to persuade the villagers.

"I know why everyone is thanking me. It's because you think I should have all these good things to myself. Isn't it enough for me to just live my own life?"

She smiled softly as she watched everyone nod silently, "You think you are not related to me, but in my eyes, you are not."

Shen Ningsi rubbed Gu Xiuwen's head, "I know everyone looked down on me in the past because I didn't act like a good stepmother. I asked Xiuwen, a half-grown child, to work outside to support the whole family. But I acted like a rich lady, lying at home every day with food provided for me."

"But I know everyone is nice to Xiuwen." Shen Ningsi didn't smile, but everyone could see the seriousness and sincerity in her eyes.

Shen Ningsi bowed and said, "If you hadn't given my two brothers some work, I and my unborn child would have starved to death long ago. Thank you very much."

Although most of the people in the village gossiped about Wang's family behind their backs, seeing that they knew they were cheated by the Wang family but did not immediately rob them, it was clear that they were not the kind of people who wanted people to die.

Although they didn't help Shen Ningsi's family much, they didn't really hope for their death.

"I remember everyone's kindness in my heart. I didn't actually put in much effort to feed everyone. I just found food that no one had discovered before. To truly grow something, you have to rely on yourselves."

Shen Ningsi paused for a moment, "I just don't want to see everyone starve to death."

She saw out of the corner of her eye that Gu Hong wanted to say something but stopped herself and just smiled at him.

Gu Hong's fingers at his side loosened and clenched again, and finally he just waved his hand, "Did you hear what she said? I don't want to hear the words 'female Bodhisattva' again in the future!"

"Stop crowding around here. Gu's injuries haven't fully healed yet, and he's probably been disturbed by your noise and can't sleep! I've already ordered a food distribution station to be set up in the east. After everyone receives food, a dedicated person will mark their name on the roster. Each person can only receive food once a day."

Gu Hong said coldly, "If another person surrounds us within a quarter of an hour, we will not receive any food today!"

As soon as these words were spoken, no one dared to stay, and everyone immediately retreated like a tide.

Shen Ningsi could no longer hold on and could only fall on Gu Xiuwen's shoulder.

"What are you doing?" Gu Xiuwu stared at Gu Hong with eyes as big as copper bells, wishing he could chop off the hand he stretched out.

He and his brother carefully helped Shen Ningsi back to the room, leaving Gu Hong standing there with a sullen face.

Gu Xiuwen originally didn't want to continue to bother Shen Ningsi, but after thinking about it, he couldn't help but said, "If mother is worried that the title of female Bodhisattva will be dangerous, she can just stop them from shouting. Why did you say those words?"

Shen Ningsi let Yun'er feed her water, and after swallowing a big mouthful, her face finally showed some color.

"Why do you have such a big opinion about General Gu?"

"Hey!" Gu Hong sneered outside the door, "You're not blind. You know that the attitude of these two brats is wrong."

Gu Hong glanced at Shen Ningsi's pale fingertips hanging at his side, then turned around and closed the door silently.

"I don't need you to worry about me. Since I can borrow this food, I can also repay it."

Shen Ningsi was helpless. "General Gu, I know you are in a high position and have great power. It is not difficult for you to get whatever you want. But now there is no shortage of food. You borrowed something, and others may also want it."

"Even if you have the ability to pay it back yourself, you will still offend people, unless you can return double the amount of food and fodder."

Those who had made great achievements on the battlefield would have all their merits erased when they entered the imperial court. Only when war broke out again could their former status be restored. Gu Sanshui's actions would only make his future situation even more difficult.

Shen Ningsi didn't want to owe anyone anything. Gu Sanshui didn't say it, but she knew that he had borrowed food and grass in the first place because he didn't want her to drag her sick body to explain planting methods.

"Do you think they will hand over the food if you tell them so?"

Gu Hong's disdainful look instantly made Gu Xiuwu unable to sit still. He stood up and challenged, "Are you going to rob them? You're not going to convince people with reason, you're going to rely on your fists?"

"Get out of here! Do you have the right to speak here?"

Gu Hong had a cold face. He grabbed Gu Xiuwu by the collar and threw him out the door.

Seeing Fan Xing standing in the courtyard with a wry smile, Gu Hong narrowed his eyes and said, "Master Fan, I have sent food and fodder here. What have you done?"

"General Gu!"

Shen Ningsi had just been lying on the bed, but now he hurried out of the room.

Barefoot, she pulled Gu Xiuwu up from the ground, and after carefully checking that the boy was not injured, she breathed a sigh of relief.

Shen Ningsi is not a person without temper. She can gain a foothold in the laboratory not by flattery, but by her own real ability.

Even as a peasant woman now, Shen Ningsi would not face Gu Sanshui and lose everything she had defended.

"General, I never thought I owed you anything. You saved me, so I let you, a stranger, live in my home, and I ignored all the rumors. You borrowed food and supplies, and I will find a way to repay you double in the future. Since we owe each other nothing, why dare you do this to my child?"

Her voice was calm and not angry, but her flat tone and cold eyes all showed that Ana Shen was angry.

"It's not that Master Fan did nothing, it's just that you can't see it."

Shen Ningsi sneered, "Didn't Lord Fan contribute to the eradication of those local rich people? The people of Wanning Village were harmed by the head of the village, but now they still trust Lord Fan. Isn't it because he is seriously mediating?"

"You want to even the odds with me?"

Shen Ningsi was so angry that she laughed. Could this man really not listen to a word he said?

"General Gu, I respect your status as a general and have been tolerant of you many times, but you must understand that this is my home and Gu Xiuwu is my child. It is not someone else's turn to discipline him!"

Fan Xing stood there, the smile on his face completely frozen.

This was Gu Shacai. It was obvious that when a military general came to the capital, he would be called a reckless man by the civil officials behind his back. But Gu Hong was full of anger, and even if someone looked down on him, they would not dare to say a bad word about him in private.

How dare Shen Ningsi, a woman, confront Gu Hong?

The words were spoken coldly, and Shen Ningsi’s etiquette could not be faulted.

She bowed and saluted, "General Gu is a noble man, and his children are ignorant of the ways of the world, so they may offend him. To avoid General Gu getting angry, please leave."

Gu Hong kicked the millstone over. "I can't stay, but Fan Xing can? I'm hard to serve, but Fan Xing is easy to serve?"
