Ye Shuning saw that the big iron pot was not only expensive but also required a lot of industrial coupons. It was really difficult for her to buy one. Fortunately, there was a basically the same big pot in the cafeteria of the institute.
Ye Shuning saw someone selling vegetable seeds and bought some. She was going to plant something on the land in the space. Of course, she would plant vegetables.
After Ye Shuning finished shopping, she didn't stay in town for long before heading back. Because there were pedestrians on the road, she had to carry the backpack as a shield. However, she put the things in the backpack directly into the space.
When she was almost at the village, she placed the large iron pot she had prepared on her back basket. Because she lived in a remote area, she met almost no one on the way home.
After arriving home safely, Ye Shuning first put the big iron pot on the stove, and then used mud to fill the gap between the big iron pot and the stove, so that she could use the big iron pot to cook in the evening.
After finishing the stove, Ye Shuning took out all the things she had prepared in advance and placed them in their appropriate places.
Ye Shuning ate some leftovers and continued to weave the mat. She would be able to finish it today.
In the evening, a mat was finally woven. Before laying the kang, Ye Shuning prepared some paste and then used newspaper to cover all the walls of the room. This made it much cleaner.
After pasting the walls, Ye Shuning spread the reed mat directly on the kang. She then wiped the mat, laid out the double quilt, and then a sheet. The room immediately became cleaner and warmer. At least it felt like a place to live.
Ye Shuning cleaned the kang cabinet and placed her bedding on it, along with some clothes and other things inside. She used the lock she had bought to lock the kang cabinet and the outside door.
She also nailed two nails on the wall of the window, and then found a piece of plain, thick cloth to make curtains, so that the room would be much more secluded when the curtains were hung at night.
After cleaning up the house, it finally looked like a home. Ye Shuning lay on the kang, feeling tired and too lazy to move, so she took out a box of small cakes from her space and ate them.
As it got dark, she closed the door and went into the institute, then took a nice hot bath in the bathroom of her dormitory.
Except for the fact that there was no one in the institute, everything was running normally. She didn't know why, but it was convenient for her.
After drying her hair, Ye Shuning took out the quilt from her dormitory and spread the bedding she brought from Yan Jingwen under her body. It felt quite soft.
At night, the kang was heated and she slept at the head of it, feeling warm underneath. Lying in the warm quilt, Ye Shuning finally had a sound sleep.
The next day, Ye Shuning woke up bright and clear. She stretched out in her quilt, feeling that she had slept very comfortably. It would be nice if her life could be like this from now on.
Ye Shuning got up, put on her clothes, folded her quilt, and washed up. Her family didn't have much firewood, so she cooked breakfast in the dormitory kitchen.
After breakfast, she locked the door and walked towards the back mountain. She was going to collect some firewood.
It was early spring, the weather was dry, and there were many dead branches in the mountains. However, Ye Shuning found that there were not many dead branches on the ground, probably all of them had been picked up. There were still many dead branches on the trees, but most of them were too high to reach.
Ye Shuning thought for a moment and then went into the research institute to find a stick. There was a grape trellis in front of the institute's experimental building. The vines were already covered in a number of small bunches of grapes, and they would probably be ready to eat soon.
She found a few long bamboo poles under the grape trellis and chose one of similar length. She tied a hook made of bent wire to it. With this hook, she could hook down the dead branches higher up in the tree, which made collecting firewood much faster.
Ye Shuning collected the branches she had taken from the trees directly into the research institute, without having to carry them herself. Fortunately, she had a research institute that was like a portable space, which brought her a lot of convenience. For example, this time, she could take back as much firewood as she collected.
Ye Shuning accidentally found mantis seeds on a dead branch. This is a medicinal herb with many uses.
She studied chemistry and had participated in pharmaceutical research. Many synthetic drugs are chemically synthesized. And although mantis seeds are considered a traditional Chinese medicine, she had heard of them.
She remembered some older people saying they used to collect mantis seeds and sell them for money when they were young. Could she also collect some? If she could sell them, it would be a source of income, right?
Then, while Ye Shuningzi was collecting dead branches, she also paid attention to whether there were mantis seeds on the tree. If there were any, she would hook them down.
These mantis seeds can only be seen in winter when there are no leaves on the trees. Even so, such a small thing is a test of eyesight.
Ye Shuning spent the entire morning collecting a good deal of firewood, and also gathered two or three pounds of mantis seeds. She carried a bundle of branches back home as a pretense.
There was no firewood shed at home, so she planned to build one herself. It didn't have to be too high or too big, just enough to shelter the firewood from the rain.
It's early spring now, so it won't rain easily, so there's no need to rush.
Ye Shuning put the firewood she was carrying in the yard and took out some from the space.
At noon, Ye Shuning cooked in the big pot in the main hall. She couldn't just keep cooking all the time, or people would get suspicious.
At noon, Ye Shuning made a bowl of tomato and egg noodles in a big pot. She just had to light the fire and no one else would know what she had done.
After lunch, she locked the door and went back into the institute. She had to make full use of the land there.
After entering the institute, she changed into light clothes and began to pull out the flowers and plants in the flowerbed. They were all very common varieties anyway. Now was a special period, and she was in no mood to appreciate these flowers and plants.
She found a shovel at the residence of the old man in charge of landscaping at the institute, and used it to turn over the soil in the flower bed, and then planted some cabbage seeds and pepper seeds.
She found some lettuce and cilantro seeds, as well as two pots of strawberries, in the dorm room of a colleague who loved gardening.
She tidied up the other flower bed and planted lettuce, coriander and rapeseed. If the vegetables in these two flower beds can grow well, they will be enough for her to eat for a while.
In addition to the small garden and flower beds, the institute also has several green belts with low shrubs and tall sycamore trees. There are also several fruit trees planted next to the laboratory building.
Two peach trees, two pear trees, two apple trees, one loquat tree, and two cherry trees formed a small orchard, which was once a feature of the research institute.
These trees are all high-yield varieties, and the landscaping manager takes good care of them. Every year, these trees produce a lot of fruit, which is then brought to the cafeteria and served as after-meal fruit for the institute's staff.
Sometimes some colleagues will go to experience the joy of harvest and help pick fruits.
Although this is land that can be used for farming, Ye Shuning does not intend to move these fruit trees. She is counting on them to bear fruit so that she can eat it.
No matter what, she wants to make full use of the institute's land.
