Chapter 31 The Cunning Ulysses

Not long after returning from Nesser, Maggie discovered that in addition to Roy, there was a creature in the room that looked like a small ghost.

The little ghost's beady eyes on the white cloth saw her push the door open and immediately turned fierce, changing from an oval shape to a slanted semicircle.

"This woman! She doesn't look like a good person at all!"

The little ghost turned to Roy and said with certainty.

This distance is just right so Maggie can hear clearly.

"..."

Maggie said she was wronged and that she hadn't even said a word.

“Maggie is my good friend, and she’s so beautiful! She must be a good person!”

Roy spoke with conviction.

"?"

Maggie looked puzzled. While it was good that Roy spoke up for her, it didn't seem to have much to do with this.

"You! You're being unreasonable! I'm going back!"

The little ghost spoke angrily, then turned to leave.

Roy became unusually dejected at a visible speed, and the little figure became listless, as if it hadn't been watered.

Upon seeing this, Maggie immediately offered words of comfort.

"Roy, he doesn't like me. Don't force it. Don't argue with your friend."

Upon hearing the name 'Loy,' the little ghost paused noticeably as it prepared to fly away, then darted back to Loy like lightning.

"You told her your real name? You really told her?!"

The little ghost's face was filled with disbelief, and his beady eyes widened from oval to perfectly round.

"...Yes, so what! She's Roy's good friend!"

When asked this abruptly, Roy was a little guilty for a moment, but after seeing Maggie, he quickly became confident and his voice and tone became much stronger.

"!"

The little ghost was stunned when Roy yelled at it.

He twisted his head like a propeller, scanning back and forth between Roy and Maggie, before finally floating menacingly in front of Maggie, his tone unusually fierce.

"You despicable human! How dare you deceive the naive Roy! And make him give you his name! Humans are indeed cunning creatures!"

The little ghost was furious, but he was too small to be a threat to Maggie.

Maggie had vaguely sensed the importance of true names to elemental spirits during this time, but she didn't yet understand their specific uses. Now, seeing the little ghost so angry, she was even more certain of her guess.

"You humans who keep calling me despicable, do you really understand me?"

Maggie frowned slightly. Perhaps Roy's friend was indeed very knowledgeable, but such an arrogant personality was not suitable for her to be her teacher.

"No need to understand! Humans are just awful!"

The little ghost got even angrier; DouDou couldn't hide the murderous rage in her eyes.

"Then please do as you wish."

Maggie's face immediately turned cold. To hell with trying to win her over! There's more than just this one dark elemental spirit. Once she leaves the Kingdom of Arnold, she'll find other ways to communicate with it.

She may indeed need an elemental spirit to help her protect herself, but that doesn't mean she can tolerate someone with such a terrible temper.

Maggie's temper is not as good as it seems. If anyone angers her, she will transform into the most vicious being in the world.

She's only refraining from turning on him on the spot because of Roy.

"You! You! You! You!!"

The little ghost seemed to have never been treated like this before, and in an instant, its anger turned into a look of 'you're being unreasonable'.

Maggie was both angry and somewhat impressed by him; his tiny eyes could express so many emotions.

What's wrong with me?

Maggie crossed her arms, giving off a "what can you do to me?" look that made the little ghost furious.

It wasn't a metaphor; it really was on fire, emitting that eerie blue, almost will-o'-the-wisp-like flame.

"!"

So it turns out he not only looks like a ghost, but also has the characteristic of being a will-o'-the-wisp?

Maggie was surprised.

"Hmph! Human! I've decided not to leave. I'm staying here to stop you from deceiving Roy!"

The little ghost turned around angrily and flew to Roy's side, adopting a protective stance towards her friend, while showing a wary expression towards Maggie.

"as you like."

Maggie didn't even glance at the little ghost, and collapsed straight onto the bed.

The warm sun outside dispelled much of the chill in her body, but that gloomy aura still lingered around her, like...

It was as if Ulysses had never left.

"..."

etc!

The moment the thought crossed her mind, Maggie sat up in shock from her deathbed.

The little ghost and Roy were whispering to each other in the corner, talking about something, and every now and then Roy could be heard refuting them.

Her sudden big movement immediately drew the attention of both little ones to Maggie.

Maggie didn't care and was still lost in thought.

She wondered why she felt so unwell for so long, the chill lingered, and she always felt like someone was watching her from behind.

Even with the blessing of moonlight, the aftereffects shouldn't last this long.

The last time the curse struck, she only drank a cup of hot tea and recovered in half an hour.

It turns out that old man Ulysses never cut off contact and was eavesdropping on her conversations.

Maggie's lips twitched. She had thought vampires were cunning, but she hadn't expected them to be so uncivilized.

She raised her head and spoke softly into the air.

"Our Ancestor, isn't what you're doing rather unethical?"

Roy and the little ghost looked at Maggie, who was talking to herself for no reason, with puzzled expressions, and then whispered among themselves.

“Look at her, she’s not only vicious, but she’s also mentally unstable.”

The little ghost's voice was neither too loud nor too soft, just enough for Maggie to catch, and she immediately shot him a glare.

How dare they treat her like a lunatic!

“You’re talking nonsense. Maggie is fine and mentally healthy. She must have her reasons for doing this.”

Roy slapped the little ghost's mouth shut and retorted righteously.

"..."

Maggie's lips twitched continuously, unsure whether she should be moved by Roy's unconditional trust in her.

She took a deep breath, temporarily ignoring Roy and the little ghost's little drama, and spoke to the air again.

“Ulysses, the progenitor of vampires, it would be too shameful to tell anyone that he was eavesdropping on other people’s conversations.”

The room was quiet for a while before Ulysses' deep, hoarse voice could be heard.

"And what about you? You are the Holy Maiden of Light, yet you made a deal with me."

Maggie raised an eyebrow, revealing a playful expression, her tone extremely teasing.

"What? Does even the Ancestor consider himself something shameful?"

Now that her identity has been exposed and he has leverage over her, she should at least make things difficult for Ulysses. Showing weakness would be a disservice to her.

"Quick-witted and eloquent."

Ulysses clearly hadn't expected Maggie to say that, and after a long silence, he finally uttered four words.

"I may or may not be the Holy Maiden of Light, and do you also feel that you may or may not be awake?"

Maggie brushed aside her own affairs and then launched into a highly aggressive counter-question.

She continued her pursuit, figuring he probably hadn't realized how bad her situation was today. Making him look foolish would likely prevent him from mentioning it again.

"Although I am asleep, I am not completely unaware of what is happening outside. The Temple of Light is not so easy to talk to."

Ulysses, with his excellent composure, did not lose his composure despite Maggie's provocation, and spoke calmly as if they were having a casual conversation.
