Chapter 391 The Second Illusion

Maggie gently bent down, reached out and touched Weaver's head with one hand, and touched Rephia's head with the other.

The two fluffy little heads still carried the warmth unique to the Fire Spirit Clan. They were very warm. The child's hair was fine and soft, and the touch was more like... petting a dog than hair.

The moment the thought crossed her mind, she laughed at herself.

Such a serious, solemn, and sorrowful scene actually reminded her of the feel of petting a dog.

"Okay, I'll take you away."

Maggie softened her voice, as if whispering, like the sound of the wind.

If it was just a dream, she wanted to fulfill the wishes of the young twins.

However, the instant she spoke, the surrounding environment seemed to shatter like a broken mirror, instantly disintegrating and falling in large pieces, crashing to the ground and breaking into even smaller fragments.

Before Maggie could even pull her hand away from the young twins, she realized that the surroundings had changed.

...

Maggie subconsciously looked around. The scene was even worse than in Fire Spirit Village. There were corpses of various races everywhere, and the stench of blood was mixed with a nauseating stench of decay.

The endless battlefield was filled with corpses and shattered weapons. Occasionally, one could see wandering ghosts, which were of low level and lacked consciousness, but were still somewhat aggressive.

Maggie frowned slightly; this scene was somewhat similar to the main battlefield against the undead when she first met the God of Light.

The current state of affairs suggests that the battlefield has just been repelled by the undead and hasn't been cleaned up yet, or perhaps there's simply not enough energy to clean it up.

After all, it's already very difficult to resist the undead.

She struggled through the pile of corpses for an unknown amount of time until a small figure suddenly appeared ahead, furtively clutching something in its arms.

Maggie frowned slightly and followed, because the face looked familiar.

They look a bit like Gemini.

Finally, after struggling through the pile of corpses, she followed the figure to a relatively clean open space. Looking inside, she saw the twins, who had grown a bit but were still quite young.

The younger brother, Weaver, had just returned. He placed the things he was carrying in his arms in their house, sat on the floor, and gave Raphia a proud smile.

It was called a home, but it was actually a house abandoned due to the war, with ruins, drafts coming from all sides, and no roof.

"Look, brother, these are all things I found on the battlefield. I didn't encounter any undead this time, and I wasn't injured."

His tone was smug. Maggie, from a not-so-close distance, could roughly tell that what he had brought back were mostly the relics of the fallen. The most numerous items were not treasures, but spellbooks and some scattered parchment scrolls, perfect for practicing magic.

In such chaotic times, magical knowledge is an invaluable resource.

Everyone wants to hold onto what they have to save their lives, not wanting the undead to discover them and fight against them, nor wanting their own kind to take it away. No matter the race, selfishness is inevitable.

"Next time... I'll go."

Raphia pursed his lips, managing to squeeze out the words with difficulty, but it was clear that he was actually very resistant.

Maggie remembered that Raphia seemed to hate corpses.

"No need, no need, brother. You're smart. If you learn all these magic spells quickly, you can teach me. I'm waiting for you to be my teacher."

"I'm so stupid, there's no use in me staying at home."

The younger brother, Wefia, shook his head sharply, resolutely rejecting his older brother's suggestion, while still chatting and laughing with Raphia.

"..."

In the end, Raphia remained silent, seemingly acquiescing to her brother's choice.

Seeking a glimmer of hope in this chaotic battlefield, and surviving by looting corpses, was a way of life that Maggie never expected. It turned out that these two brothers had come here after leaving Fire Spirit Village.

She felt her heart clench, as if someone were squeezing it tightly.

They were just children, yet they had to survive in such a dangerous place, where a single misstep could mean their death on the battlefield.

No one knows when the undead will invade again, or when the war will begin. They are left here, gambling on their luck.

The boundary of the living beings' camp is quite far from here, and if the undead attack, they will have no chance of escaping.

Not to mention that some little ghosts are still wandering around, which is also a source of danger for the two children who have not yet grown up.

It's obviously more dangerous for the younger brother to go out and loot corpses.

However, if the undead were to suddenly attack, Refia, who was near the border, would have a much better chance of surviving.

But the younger brother insisted on going out by himself.

Maggie looked into the distance, her mood not very good. After thinking for a moment, she came out from the ruins where she was hiding and walked up to the two brothers.

"Don't stay here, you should go back inside the border."

Maggie knew this place was definitely not safe. The Scourge could sweep through hundreds or even thousands of times. If they stayed here like this, the probability of them dying was very high.

"Who are you?!"

The younger brother, Weaver, jumped up and looked at Maggie warily, seemingly afraid that she would steal his spoils, which he had earned with his life.

"I'm here to help you..."

Maggie paused for a moment before speaking.

This must be an illusion created by another fragment of the Twin Gods' memories. In their real experience, she never existed, so they don't know her.

"Ha, humans, the words of humans are the least trustworthy."

A look of disgust flashed across Weaver's face, as if he had thought of something.

At this moment, her brother Raphia looked at Maggie for a moment and then suddenly spoke.

"If you don't mind, you can sit down."

Maggie was somewhat surprised. She looked at Raphia and realized that he was indeed different. Back then, he only showed fear, but now he was more composed, and his eyes held a scrutinizing gaze as he looked at her.

It's starting to resemble the Gemini Gods.

"No need, I just want to take you away."

Maggie shook her head, pointed to the dark clouds not far away, and said.

“That’s a sign that the undead are about to attack. You’ve lived here for a long time, haven’t you? You shouldn’t be unaware of that.”

Upon hearing this, Weaver's expression changed drastically. He looked up at the sky and, just as Maggie had said, the sky had turned completely dark.

His hands clenched instantly.

"Let's go, little brother, let's go with her."

Raphia nodded knowingly and chose to 'trust' Maggie without hesitation.

As for whether it's genuine or not.

Maggie guesses.

Definitely not.

The older brother, Rafia, is far more thoughtful than his younger brother, and coupled with the hardships they've endured during this period, he may have grown to a frightening degree.

Maggie didn't care, and simply led them back to human territory.
