The further they went in, the colder it became. The thin saintess's robes couldn't keep out the chill, so Maggie simply cast a healing spell.
Warmth instantly filled my body.
"It's still so comfortable like this..."
Having endured the torment of the vampire curse and excessive blood loss, Maggie now feels an extreme aversion to the sensation of cold.
If someone were to see Maggie using healing magic to warm her body right now, they would probably laugh out loud. Wasting magic power is a major taboo for magicians, and it's impossible to quickly switch to other spells during the casting process. Doing so in such a threatening environment could be life-threatening.
Unfortunately, Maggie is different; her magic is almost limitless.
She wasn't fighting alone; even if she used healing magic, she could raise her staff and release several light arrows right now.
“Maggie, it’s dangerous in here.”
Roy flew around Maggie, his voice filled with worry, as if he had sensed something terrifying inside.
Maggie nodded, indicating that she knew about it, and Roy had no choice but to give up trying to dissuade her and nervously followed beside Maggie.
The little ghost, with a serious expression, scouted ahead, his beady eyes wide open, doing his best to protect Maggie from any dangers.
As for why.....
Maggie guessed it was because of Roy.
"Strange, we've been here for so long and haven't seen a single ghost..."
On either side of Maggie stood rows of tombstones. The coffin behind them looked untouched, but Maggie knew without a doubt that it was probably empty now.
"It smells awful here."
Nesser was filled with resistance from the moment he saw the cemetery, but in order to protect Maggie, he still gritted his teeth and went in. Finally, after entering the area of the tombstone forest, he couldn't help but complain.
Maggie then noticed a stench lingering around her nose, faint yet easily overlooked in this terrifying environment.
But elves are different; they are naturally sensitive and have a strong aversion to the likes of the undead and demons.
"Could it be a rotting corpse?"
Maggie looked around and, apart from the unpleasant cawing of crows, noticed nothing unusual, nor did she see any signs of a rotting corpse crawling out of the grave.
As she was still thinking, she suddenly felt a chilly embrace come from behind her. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of a pale white arm with slender fingers resting on her shoulder.
In an instant, Maggie's hair stood on end, and the sound of her rapid heartbeat almost drowned out all other sounds around her.
There's something behind her!
Neither Nesser nor Perkin noticed its presence, nor even Loy and the little ghost; it simply crept quietly onto her back.
No matter how you look at it, the guy behind her is far more powerful than her.
Maggie forced herself to calm down. At such close range, if she rashly resisted, she might be killed on the spot. Even if she cast a spell without chanting, it would still take a fraction of a second. Moreover, she might not even be able to hurt the ghost behind her.
Now is the time to absolutely not provoke the undead behind you, nor let it discover that it has already discovered you.
Maggie's brain was working at lightning speed.
The useful things she possessed included a moonstone marked with tracking magic by Harlen, and a replica of a holy emblem given to her by the archbishop.
The Holy Emblem is the most prized treasure of the Temple of Light. Its original form is currently in the hands of the Pope. It is a sacred object that targets dark races such as the undead and vampires, and has a remarkable effect on dark beings.
But even replicas aren't something ordinary temple members can obtain. Since Ford gave her the Holy Symbol, Maggie will definitely make good use of it.
Moonstone is not needed for now, so Maggie is not considering it.
As for why she brought it along, it was mainly because she didn't want to attract Harlen's attention.
Maggie planned to pretend she hadn't noticed, and then take it off and put it in the room before the important operation, which would confuse Harlan and prevent her from leaving the temple—killing two birds with one stone.
Meanwhile, Maggie pretended nothing was happening, letting the terrifying white arm rest on her shoulder as she walked deeper into the cemetery.
To Maggie's astonishment, a seemingly exquisite and luxurious courtyard appeared deep within the cemetery.
The flowers in the courtyard garden are still in full bloom, and it looks like they have just been watered.
Maggie would absolutely believe anyone who said someone lived inside.
"!"
Maggie's expression almost cracked on the spot. She prided herself on her strong mental fortitude and had seen it all; she even dared to deceive the Demon King.
But this scene... she had never seen anything like it before.
"Sister? How could there be something in here...?"
Nesser also looked bewildered and pointed to the courtyard that looked so normal it was almost eerie.
"..."
Maggie remained silent, because she didn't know either.
The original comic only briefly touched on the storyline of the Necropolis, only mentioning that Harun's mission after being promoted from Paladin Commander to a direct subordinate of the Pope was to clean up the undead calamity in the Necropolis.
The Abyss Soul Stone is most likely in this courtyard that seems a bit off. Now we have no choice but to go in, whether we want to or not.
"Let's go..."
Now that there were no outsiders around, Maggie spoke those two words weakly, with a kind of beauty that said, "It's good to be alive, and it's okay to die."
She dragged her heavy steps forward, preparing to knock on the door, not knowing whether it would be a person or a ghost who opened it.
No, it's definitely a ghost no matter how you look at it...
As for why his steps were heavy, it was because he was carrying another one on his back.
The hands gripping her shoulders tightened, and what's worse, the ghost had long fingernails. If nothing unexpected happened, Maggie guessed that bloodstains had already appeared on her shoulders, and the blood might have even seeped through her saintess robes.
"Hello, is anyone here?"
Maggie put on a polite smile again and knocked on the courtyard gate. However, beneath her seemingly calm exterior, her body remained tense, fully alert and on guard against any ghostly creature that might leap out of the courtyard.
However, things took another unexpected turn for Maggie; a woman who looked very gentle actually opened the door for them.
"We haven't had any guests at home in a long time, what brings you here?"
The woman had a smile similar to Maggie's, but paired with her virtuous face, it gave her an extra touch of maternal glow, making her appear very gentle.
"It's already dark, and we don't have anywhere to stay yet. We'd be so grateful if you could take us in for the night."
Maggie looked guilty and embarrassed, and began to lie through her teeth, saying that she had no idea whether it was day or night outside the cemetery.
"Okay, come in."
The woman didn't seem surprised and opened the door to let Maggie in. Nesser nervously gripped Maggie's clothes the whole time, while Perkin's eyes darted around, quickly observing the situation in the courtyard.
"Wait, don't leave me behind."
Just as the woman was about to close the door, a familiar male voice came from behind Maggie, causing Maggie's pupils to dilate in shock.
