After Maggie finished speaking, she suddenly realized that her words did not seem to conform to the common sense of people in this world, and the old monster probably wouldn't understand. So she changed her words.
“Ancestor, if I don’t leave soon, your Thorn Castle might be bombarded by the Temple of Light’s magic.”
Her tone carried a subtle threat. Anyway, Ulysses didn't know her current status or situation in the temple, so Maggie could spout nonsense without being caught, taking advantage of the information gap.
“Miss Saint, I’m thinking that keeping you here with me might be a good option.”
Ulysses seemed not to hear Maggie's words, his voice tinged with a hint of languor.
Maggie could feel the hand on her waist exerting force, instantly dragging most of her body into the wooden coffin, leaving only her calves dangling outside. Startled, Maggie couldn't help but reach out and grab the edge of the coffin.
"Our ancestor is joking."
Maggie had no choice but to answer.
This time she was truly frightened. Ulysses never spoke carelessly; if he brought it up, it meant he genuinely thought so.
If he really controlled me like this and locked me in a coffin, that would be a real disaster.
She didn't want to become a vampire, nor did she want to sleep with a 'corpse' every day.
"Our ancestor still has traitors to deal with, so he certainly won't be content to just sleep here forever, will he?"
Maggie racked her brains, pulling out every piece of information she could, just wanting Ulysses to release her.
At this moment, she had no time to think about why Ulysses would wake up now, or whether it was reasonable for him to wake up now; she was only thinking about how to get away.
The air was still, then suddenly Ulysses's intriguing chuckle could be heard.
"Ah, perhaps Miss Saintess is right."
As the words fell, Maggie could feel the coldness that had been pressed against her body had left. She finally breathed a sigh of relief and struggled to roll out of the coffin.
Only after she stood up again did she realize that Ulysses was still lying there peacefully, like a silent, exquisite doll, as if he had never woken up.
When Maggie came to her senses and realized what had just happened, her chest heaved violently, and blood rushed to her head.
“Ancestor, please don’t make such pointless jokes next time.”
Maggie forced a smile and squeezed out the words through gritted teeth, her wariness of this manipulative old monster at its peak, a murderous urge welling up inside her.
This vampire has never been awake. Everything that just happened was just an illusion he created, including that incredibly realistic touch. It was all a cruel joke to tease her. It's a shame she was so scared; she was practically begging for mercy.
This feeling of being mocked really infuriated Maggie.
"Indeed, Miss Saintess is very clever."
Ulysses' voice became ethereal and diffuse again, no longer as close as it had been, as if he were speaking directly to him.
"Hehe, if I were smart, I wouldn't have been fooled by you just now."
Maggie numbly tugged at the corners of her mouth, her frustration beyond words. If she had just looked up and not let fear control her mind, she would have definitely discovered his little trick.
"Never mind, I've delivered the package. See you next time."
She took a deep breath, suppressed her emotions, and turned to walk towards the castle gate without hesitation. Every minute she lingered here would be an insult to her intelligence.
Just a second before she stepped out of the castle, Ulysses, whom she thought had never woken up, slowly opened his eyes and fixed his gaze on her back.
“Maggie..…”
The male voice, seemingly offering a sigh, faded away, echoing through the ancient castle before slowly disappearing. The progenitor of vampires also closed his eyes once more.
The castle returned to tranquility, awaiting the arrival of the next offering.
Maggie did feel an illusion created by Ulysses, but Ulysses was not completely unconscious. If Maggie had actually mustered the courage to look up, she would have met his scarlet eyes.
...
Leaving the Thorn Castle, Maggie was still fuming the whole way. As a transmigrator, she had actually been fooled and tricked by that old monster. She felt incredibly ashamed.
So much so that when she returned along the same route, she didn't even notice that the mermaid Xiu hadn't left at all and was still standing under the tree where she had been tackled.
As she drew closer, the light blue fishtail came into direct view, and Maggie finally realized what was happening.
At this moment, she was less than one step away from stepping on the fish's tail.
So Maggie silently withdrew her foot and turned her head to find Xiu Zheng looking at her with a strange gaze.
"Um...sorry."
Maggie was silent for a moment, then silently apologized. Although she hadn't stepped on it yet, ignoring the other person and almost stepping over their precious fish tail was somewhat impolite.
"You actually managed to come out of there alive."
Xiu glanced meaningfully at the dense forest behind Maggie, his expression somewhat strange.
Maggie thought he found her battle-damaged saintess outfit unusual, but she never expected him to bring it up.
She fell silent for a moment.
The wounded Holy Maiden of Light did not immediately seek out the Holy Knight, but instead went to see the vampire. This is strange no matter how you look at it, and full of flaws.
"If I remember correctly, there was a very powerful vampire locked up inside."
Xiu seemed oblivious to Maggie's unease and continued talking to himself.
The more he talked, the more expressionless Maggie became, until finally she even harbored murderous intent towards him.
This mermaid knows too much.
But the human form of the sea god definitely has some protagonist's halo, so if you want to kill him, you might die before you even make a move.
Maggie could only remain silent, pretending to be a wooden doll.
"You want to kill me."
Xiu's gaze returned to her, and as if sensing her emotions, he raised an eyebrow and spoke in a statement of fact.
"..."
Maggie remained silent. In the comics, Xiu was portrayed as being close to the strategist of the main characters, an incredibly intelligent mermaid. It was normal for him to be able to sense her deeply hidden emotions.
His involvement later on made the comic's plot flow more smoothly.
He shouldn't have appeared in the first volume of the story. In other words, he should still be in the ocean, hiding from another group of mermaids, instead of inexplicably appearing in the Lleus River and treating her as prey.
Although her survival was a variable, a kind of butterfly effect, Maggie racked her brains but couldn't figure out how she could affect the plot in the ocean.
"I can't kill you."
Maggie looked away, her voice calm and surprisingly sincere. Lying and pretending were unnecessary lessons for Xiu; it was better to be honest.
But why didn't he leave?
I can't be staying here just to wait for her, can I?
