"...Where did you hear that from?"
Maggie almost couldn't resist jumping in front of Eve and covering her mouth, but fortunately, she had developed some self-control after transmigrating and managed to restrain herself.
"Your Highness, don't you know? You will be the God's bride."
Eve seemed to realize that her qualities did not meet the standards expected of a priestess bride.
Furthermore, she believed that Maggie did a much better job than her and fit the image of the Holy Maiden of Light in her mind. In a moment of overthinking, she directly assumed that Maggie would become lovers with the God of Light.
"I don't know, and the Holy Maiden of Light is not the God's bride. Don't talk nonsense in the future."
Maggie felt an urge to cover her face. She didn't know whether to praise Eve for being able to let go or criticize her for being obsessed with romance.
Furthermore, when the topic of the deity came up, all she could see was Harun's face, and her vision went completely black.
"But...."
Upon hearing Maggie's denial, Eve's face showed obvious inner turmoil.
"No buts. We are all believers in God and cannot blaspheme Him in any way."
Maggie stared into Eve's eyes and said solemnly.
"oh."
Eve blinked, seemingly sensing Maggie's firm stance, and obediently nodded in agreement. However, judging from her eyes, she didn't seem to agree with Maggie and was still convinced of her own ideas.
She firmly believed that Maggie would eventually become God's lover.
"Don't mention this matter again; it's disrespectful to the gods."
Maggie thought for a moment, then emphasized her words again.
"oh."
Eve nodded again, and Maggie finally felt relieved.
Stepping down from Eve's carriage, Maggie's steps were even a little unsteady. Her head and nerves were still numb from Eve's shocking words, and it took her a while to finally correct her thoughts.
Regarding the matter that 'the Holy Maiden of Light is not the bride of the God of Light'.
Although she had heard similar things from the elemental spirits, those were things from ancient times and certainly didn't count now.
As Maggie walked forward, she discovered that the group had stopped and started resting.
The paladin immediately came to greet Maggie as she stepped out of the carriage.
"Your Highness, you and Princess Eve have been talking for too long, and it's almost noon. Please take a rest."
Maggie then belatedly looked up at the sky and realized that it was already noon, and the sun was at its zenith.
"Great, there are mountains nearby, so it's relatively cool here."
Maggie nodded slightly, not angry at the paladin's presumptuous decision. Ahead lay a plain, and it would be a long walk. The sun was very strong and hot, and even with magic, it would be uncomfortable. It would be better to rest now.
"Thank you, Your Highness."
The paladin visibly breathed a sigh of relief, perhaps fearing that Maggie would be angry about it.
"Get some rest, there's still a long way to go."
Maggie looked up ahead and could vaguely see the city in the distance. Her destination, Taber, was the end of this journey and the location of the Duke's mansion.
I wonder what kind of expression her elderly father will have when he sees her again.
The thought that all his schemes had been thwarted by her filled her with immense joy.
Whether it was using the Duke to send Perkin into the temple, or sabotaging his plan to promote the potion of nectar, or preventing him from getting any benefits from the royal family, all of these things were enough to enrage that old bastard.
I wonder how interesting his expression will be when I see him at the St. Nardin Palace.
Maggie is really looking forward to it.
Would a human who has been trading with the messengers of hell for a long time and has already sold most of his soul be so enraged in front of nobles and royalty because of the incompleteness of his soul?
Maggie snapped out of her thoughts and turned her gaze to the camp, but she didn't see Nesser. She was a little surprised, but didn't pay much attention to it.
Although he usually clings to her whenever he sees her, he should also have his own private matters.
...
Not far from the camp, on a mountaintop, Nesser was standing on a tree with his legs dangling beside the trunk, looking down with great interest.
Because there lay several corpses there, riddled with holes and pierced by vines.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from another tree, accompanied by the sound of clapping. Nesser then looked in that direction.
"Why should a talented wood-elemental mage follow a hypocritical and useless saintess? Why not join us?"
The person hidden in the shadows had a sinister and vicious voice, and was wearing a black cloak, obscuring his face.
"..."
Nesser blinked, and when he heard him speak ill of Maggie, his little face immediately fell, and he looked very unhappy.
He didn't reply, but instead manipulated several vines to rapidly penetrate from all directions, with a strength more terrifying than arrows and blades, instantly piercing through the man.
The man in black didn't even have time to dodge before he was dressed in the garment.
He coughed up blood on the spot, staring at Nesser in disbelief, seemingly not expecting him to act so swiftly and decisively.
Unfortunately, with such severe injuries and no light magic user present, his life began to ebb rapidly. Before long, his eyes went completely dark, and he died.
Nesser stood up from the tree, sighed silently, and suddenly spoke to the air.
"Perkin, don't wear the same cloak as the bad guys next time."
The wind rustled the leaves, and after a while, the shadows in the darkness shifted, and a dark figure, similar in shape to the black-clad man who had just died, gradually appeared on the ground.
Perkin, hidden beneath the cloak, slowly raised his serpentine eyes, silently gazing at the corpse at his feet.
He killed some of them, but unlike Nesser, a wood-type mage who didn't shed blood with his own hands, he preferred to slit the throat of his prey with a dagger.
The Shadow Assassin's favorite thing to watch is his prey's death throes.
"Even peace-loving elves can kill."
Perkin's voice rang out, his injured voice hoarse to an almost ghostly degree.
With only Nesser and Perkin left in the empty woods, and Maggie not present, he was more willing to speak.
"Bad people shouldn't live, especially the bad people who hurt Maggie."
Nesser said nonchalantly, leaping down from the tree and landing precisely outside the range of the corpse. There wasn't a drop of blood on his body or hands, because Maggie didn't like it; Maggie would think it was dirty.
"...."
For some reason, Perkin did not answer Nesser, but simply disappeared back into the shadows.
Nesser ignored him and walked straight out of the woods, but just as he was about to leave, he suddenly turned back to look at the woods.
"Oh, by the way, these people are most likely mercenaries hired by the archbishop. Remember to tell Maggie."
"Also, you killed all of these people."
After saying that, Nesser tiptoed away, humming an elven nursery rhyme, completely satisfied.
