Chapter 10 An Unexpected Joy

Legend has it that magicians are extremely rare, and it has been thousands of years since the last magician was captured. It remains to be seen whether these little guys are magicians.

"So the second question is, why do you say 'human beings no longer believe in gods'?"

Maggie had been puzzled by this statement before; they seemed to firmly believe that she did not believe in the God of Light.

"...Only creatures that do not believe in gods and have a high affinity for magic could possibly discover our existence."

The elemental spirits exchanged glances and reluctantly answered.

This answer made Maggie think.

According to them, only atheists can discover elemental spirits, but all the humans on the continent of Coral have their own gods, which is why they cannot discover their existence.

"So that's why you think I don't believe in the God of Light?"

Maggie seemed lost in thought.

"Yes, if you believe in him, the rules set by the Elemental King will prevent you from seeing us."

At this moment, the elemental spirit in Maggie's hand had woken up at some point, trembling with fear and even helping its friend answer Maggie's questions.

Why are there such rules?

Maggie is now somewhat convinced that they are magicians, but there are still many questions.

Perhaps this question touched a nerve with the elemental spirits, for the elemental spirit still lying in Maggie's hands showed a sorrowful expression and choked up as it told Maggie its history, as if it was about to burst into tears.

"Humans do record that in the primitive era, magical language was born from the hands of elemental spirits, and even magical chants are filled with sanctimonious gratitude to us, but there is no record of the story of humans betraying the elemental spirits."

Maggie keenly noticed the keyword 'betrayal'—humans had actually betrayed elemental spirits?

"Our own power is close to nothing; only a few high-ranking elves have the strength to contend with other races."

"As the continent of Coral was gradually replaced by other races and the world changed, we always depended on humans with compatible attributes and kept each other company. But one day, humans betrayed us."

"With the advent of the Age of Gods, because the elemental spirits had no affection for the gods, the humans who believed in the gods actually began to doubt us. They then developed methods to enslave us, completely controlling us, eliminating the possibility of our betrayal, and calling the captured elemental spirits 'magicians'."

"Shortly after the betrayal, our king established a rule that races that believe in gods cannot see the existence of elemental spirits."

Maggie never expected that she would know such an ancient story.

But now she understood. She could see these little guys because, as a transmigrator, she had no real understanding of 'faith' and regarded the so-called God of Light and God of Darkness more as cartoon characters than as gods to be devoutly worshipped.

Before she could get out of her thoughts, several elemental spirits started whispering and discussing amongst themselves, and then collectively began to rebel and bristle.

“All the elemental spirits know that humans are cunning! You don’t trust the God of Light, yet you still became the Holy Maiden of Light, which shows that you are terrifyingly scheming. Even if we die, we will not submit to your clutches.”

"Yes! Don't even think about enslaving us!"

Maggie felt the little creature in her arms suddenly struggle violently, and it was frantically provoking her, showing an unusual tacit understanding with its companion.

"Even if I die, I will never become your magician! Forget about it!"

She felt as if a hundred ducks had appeared in her ears, quacking so loudly it gave her a headache.

"I didn't mean to arrest you, be quiet!"

Putting aside the fact that she doesn't have the magic to enslave elemental spirits, even if she did, she wouldn't be interested in these pitiful-looking little creatures.

"real?"

"Really?"

"You're not lying?"

Several little heads nervously crowded around her, asking in a tone that was hard to tell whether they were expectant or afraid.

Maggie listened to their repeated questions and nodded weakly.

Does she look like a vicious villain?

"Alright, then we believe you. Humans who don't believe in gods are indeed good people."

Seeing that Maggie agreed, the little creatures believed her without hesitation for even a second.

Maggie was left speechless, unsure whether to laugh or cry.

Are elemental spirits really that easy to fool? They believe everything they're told.

However, being easily deceived also means being easy to extract information from. Maggie adapted quickly and immediately changed her coercion strategy. For simple elemental spirits, the "friendship plan" was more suitable.

"So, we're friends now, right?"

Maggie changed her threatening expression to a gentle and friendly smile, while releasing the elemental spirit in her hand, displaying a friendly demeanor. Her change of expression was as fast as a Sichuan opera mask.

"Hmm...yes...yes."

The elemental spirits looked at each other, and finally nodded in unison. Maggie didn't need to say much; they were hooked.

"Wow, we're so amazing!"

"Yeah, yeah, we've made friends with humans! We can brag about it to them when we get back!"

"And they're friendly humans, I can brag about that for the rest of my life!"

"They never had the chance to talk to humans in their entire lives, but we did! Yay!"

Before Maggie could continue her gentle persuasion, they were all overjoyed and started holding hands and spinning around.

Hearing the cheerful laughter, Maggie felt her mood, which had been depressed all day, improve.

It's definitely easier to chat with simple-minded elves than to get along with those cunning old foxes outside.

"Why do you say that the Holy Maiden of Light was a sacrifice to the God of Light?"

Maggie waited for them to quiet down before casually continuing to ask.

The elemental spirits immediately became overjoyed, chattering away without any intention of hiding anything.

"We'll tell you everything our human friends want to know!"

"In the early days of the Divine Era, when the gods were not asleep, the Holy Maiden of Light was given to the God of Light as a bride. However, none of the Holy Maidens of Light ever returned alive. Over time, they went from being brides to sacrifices."

I was a little surprised that Maggie hadn't seen this statement mentioned in the comics.

"Doesn't the God of Light like it? Why doesn't he refuse? Why let the saintesses die in vain?"

Maggie didn't understand.

"Then we don't know. We've only been around for a short time. Perhaps the higher-ranking elemental spirits would know. If you'd like to know, we can try to ask them for you."

"Yes, yes, we're friends, it's only right that I ask for you."

“My dear friend, there is no need to panic. The God of Light has been asleep for many years. You will not become a sacrifice. Rest assured.”

Maggie was a little disappointed not to get an answer, but it wasn't unexpected; getting so many ancient secrets was already a pleasant surprise.

Thank you all.

Maggie was genuinely grateful to the little ones.
