Maggie looked up at Xiu lying in his arms, her gaze falling on his exceptionally handsome jawline and his smooth, white skin. From this unflattering angle, her eyes could perfectly appreciate just how three-dimensional his features were.
He looked down at Maggie, her long, curled, silvery eyelashes casting a shadow beneath her eyes.
Especially in this position, half-lying on his lap with one hand gently resting on her forehead, it gives one the illusion that she is being cherished and treated by him.
[Speaking of mermaids' hands, they're cool and so comfortable, quite different from human hands.]
Wait, did he just use his power on me? But he actually helped me out...
Forget it, I'll just pretend I don't know.
Maggie's mind was in a mess, but she remained calm and showed no sign of anything amiss as she quietly watched Xiu.
"Is our position inappropriate? Perhaps you should let me get up."
Her tone was calm.
"Oh, I almost forgot. I hope Your Highness won't take offense."
Xiu subtly curled the corners of his lips, gently supporting Maggie's arm as she stood up. His gaze lingered on Maggie's lips for a couple more seconds before he subtly looked away.
Maggie steadied herself and didn't notice Xiu's reaction. She breathed a sigh of relief. This must be the feeling of being grounded.
His tone was slightly exaggerated, and it was impossible to tell whether he was doing it on purpose. Maggie could only give an awkward but polite smile.
"I won't blame you, and I should thank you for catching me."
Although Maggie thought to herself that it would have been better not to catch her at all, lying on the ground was better than being embarrassed.
"Of course."
Xiu nodded gracefully, and the two finally ended their awkward interaction.
As Maggie watched Xiu's departing figure, her tense nerves finally relaxed.
but.......
Perhaps the unexpected situation had distracted her, because the thoughts that had been troubling her and weighing on her mind suddenly became clear, and the arguments in her head disappeared completely.
What is she struggling with? She should do what she wants to do. Hesitation will only keep her from moving forward.
Thinking back on every crisis in the past, each one was a life-or-death ordeal, but no one had warned her with a prophecy.
She hasn't always survived unscathed and lived to this day.
Even setting aside any so-called savior complex, the rewards and benefits of her decision to thwart the undead's plot are beyond imagination.
With a plot to predict and not being completely ignorant, it would be a huge loss not to seize this opportunity.
She was a reckless gambler.
Having figured this out, Maggie's face broke into a breathtakingly beautiful smile.
...
Although Maggie sent Perkin to track Joyce, he was more vigilant than Maggie had imagined.
Each time they entered the mansion, they would repeatedly check for any abnormalities.
This made Perkin hesitant to approach, as even in his shadow form, he had subtle weaknesses. To avoid alerting the enemy, he could only wait.
The information retrieved was scarce, with the only clue being that the aura of death emanating from him was growing stronger.
However, Maggie was not in a hurry. The process of a living person being transformed into a lich was irreversible, and Joyce didn't have much time left.
Now, all matters related to the undead in the palace are being monitored by the little ghost and Roy. She only needs to step in at the crucial moment to restrain Joyce and nip the danger in the bud.
And so, Maggie settled peacefully in the palace, waiting for the story to unfold.
However, a sense of unease lingered in her heart. If Joyce had been dealt with in the palace, there would certainly have been no life-or-death crisis.
The court magicians were no pushovers either.
She couldn't yet figure out what could have driven her to the brink of death.
Inside the room, Roy was keeping Maggie company.
"I can't understand why anyone would want to become an undead."
Roy sat on Maggie's shoulders, swinging his legs and shaking his head as he spoke.
The world is full of wonders.
Maggie answered calmly.
Suddenly, a small ghost pierced through the door and floated toward Maggie and Roy, its voice somewhat hurried.
“There was an aura of the dead in that princess’s room. I didn’t have time to go in and check, so I came back to inform you immediately.”
Upon hearing this, Maggie stood up abruptly from her seat. Although her expression remained as resolute as ever, a hint of disappointment still flashed in her eyes.
"It's still her in the end... what a pity."
Maggie sighed softly, not really knowing what she was regretting.
They might also be lamenting their fate as cannon fodder, wanting to change it but powerless to do so.
Without hesitation, Maggie turned and walked out of the room. The moment she stepped out, she called out loudly to the court magician who was on duty not far away.
"Your princess is in danger. Take men and go there now, quickly."
The mage whose name was called was clearly taken aback, but quickly became serious, bowed deeply to Maggie, and then turned and ran out of the castle.
"Fortunately, the title of Saintess is quite useful."
Maggie nodded.
At the same time, Perkin appeared before her, a look of annoyance on his face, and spoke such a long sentence for the first time.
"We lost track of him; his presence suddenly vanished from the mansion."
Maggie responded calmly.
"As expected, he's in the palace now."
It's unclear what methods the undead used to send people in, but it's likely that Eve was there to receive them.
Otherwise, it would have been impossible to get around so many people; if it weren't for the little ghost...
Maggie thought to herself and started walking towards Eve's room, casting a speed-enhancing spell on her feet.
Activating the teleportation array takes a considerable amount of time; theoretically, it should be in time.
"You're fast, go that way first."
Maggie calmly gave the order.
"......."
Perkin glanced at Maggie's side and noticed that Nesser, who was always clinging to Maggie, was not by her side, causing him to hesitate.
"I'm fine, go quickly, Nesser should be coming to find me soon."
Maggie shook her head and waved to him.
Given the poor physical abilities of the court magicians, even combined, they probably wouldn't be as fast as a single shadow assassin.
If Perkins can stop it, the subsequent troubles will be less.
"Um."
Perkin finally agreed to Maggie's request and vanished swiftly as a shadow.
Roy wasn't idle either; he had left sometime earlier and returned to Maggie's side, his expression and tone becoming extremely anxious.
"Nesser is gone; he's not in the room."
Maggie's heart sank, and an ominous premonition grew stronger, as if a pair of hands were manipulating everything from behind.
It's like... they're deliberately targeting her.
"Okay, I understand."
Maggie closed her eyes, somewhat regretting that she hadn't chosen to keep her eyes on Eve; she should have known better than to distrust her.
If something unexpected happens to Nesser...
