Chapter 164 Mission Accomplished
Seeing this, Ji Wanqing couldn't refuse any longer, so she could only nod and say, "Then... thank you for your trouble, Brother Meng Chao."
Mother Meng smiled with satisfaction and then told Ji Wanqing to get some rest. Seeing this, Ji Wanqing couldn't refuse any longer and could only nod: "Then... thank you for your trouble, Meng Chao."
As she stepped out of the hospital building, a cool evening breeze blew by, and Ji Wanqing subconsciously hugged her arms.
"Are you cold?" Meng Chao immediately noticed and moved to a different position to shield her from the wind.
"It's alright, it's alright, the wind isn't cold in this kind of weather." Ji Wanqing quickly stopped her. "It's just a few steps, really not far." She pointed in the direction of the hospital's side entrance, "Go across that tree-lined road, and that's the residential area across the street."
The two walked side by side on the bustling street, the afterglow of the setting sun casting long shadows on them.
Unlike the smell of disinfectant and the tense atmosphere in the hospital, the outside world was still bustling with traffic and full of life, which made Ji Wanqing feel as if she had been in another world.
"Sunny." Meng Chao finally couldn't help but speak, his tone cautiously probing, "Are you very familiar with this Dr. Pei?"
Ji Wanqing was preoccupied with her mother's illness and didn't think much of it. "We're not exactly close, but we're so grateful to him this time... But why are you asking this...?"
She belatedly realized what was happening and looked up at Meng Chao.
"Ah...it's nothing, just asking casually. I see you trust him a lot, and I'm worried he's too young and inexperienced." Meng Chao tried his best to keep his expression calm, not wanting to show his jealousy.
Ji Wanqing chuckled, "He is indeed very young. I thought so at first too, but after getting to know him, I found that Dr. Pei is very trustworthy."
She paused, her voice softening, "Thank you. I know you're worried about my mother too, but Dr. Pei is the person who knows my mother's condition best right now, and I trust his professional judgment."
Looking at the dark circles under her eyes and her forced spirit, Meng Chao felt a pang of heartache, but also a sense of helplessness.
When she needed support the most and was making difficult decisions, the care and material assistance he could provide seemed to be separated by a layer, unable to truly reach her core.
Meng Chao sighed, "I know... but we're friends, aren't we? Whenever you need help, I hope you can ask boldly and not have to bear it all alone."
"Yes, I know." Ji Wanqing nodded and started walking again.
As they arrived at the entrance of the residential compound, the aroma of food wafted from the restaurant. Meng Chao called out to her, "You haven't had dinner yet, have you? Eat something before you rest."
Ji Wanqing hadn't slept for more than a few hours and was extremely tired. She seemed oblivious to hunger. After hesitating for a second, she shook her head and said, "Never mind, I'll go back, take a shower, and go to sleep. I'll eat when I wake up."
"It's okay, you go back and take a shower first. I'll go buy it for you. Tell me which building you live in? I'll bring it to you when I'm done." Meng Chao smiled, seemingly knowing she would politely decline, and immediately added, "Listen to me, friends should help each other, shouldn't they?"
"Okay then... thank you so much." Ji Wanqing was deeply moved.
She knew all too well that this rich young master, who had always been waited on hand and foot since childhood, was now willing to run errands for her.
"Alright, let's hurry up and go," Meng Chao urged. "Any dietary requirements? Is there anything you don't eat?"
"I'm fine with anything, you can buy whatever you want." Ji Wanqing left her her address, then went home to take a shower.
When she came out of the bathroom and checked her phone, she saw a message from Meng Chao eight minutes earlier, saying that he had arrived at the door.
Ji Wanqing hurried to open the door and saw Meng Chao leaning against the wall, lost in thought, carrying a bag.
Hearing the door open, he immediately turned around with a smile, holding the bag high, "Here, I didn't know what you liked to eat, so I bought it according to my taste."
Looking at the bag full, Ji Wanqing couldn't help but chuckle, "How could I possibly eat all of this by myself..."
"We'll talk about it if you can't finish it." Meng Chao put the bag in her hand.
"Come in and have a seat?" Ji Wanqing politely invited him.
Meng Chao shook his head, pressed the elevator button, and said, "Have breakfast and get some rest. I'll come visit again next time."
He really wanted to go in and sit down, but he also knew that what Ji Wanqing needed most right now was to rest.
The elevator arrived, but Meng Chao didn't look at him. He casually waved and entered the elevator.
Ji Wanqing slept until 11 p.m. and saw a message from Pei Yu saying that the surgery was scheduled for the afternoon of the day after tomorrow.
After replying, she rushed to the hospital to relieve her aunt.
Before they knew it, the day of the surgery arrived. During this time, Meng Chao had sent messages to inquire about the situation.
During the pre-operative preparations, Meng's mother and Meng Chao came over again.
The mother held Ji Wanqing's hand and gently comforted her, "Don't be afraid, your mother is a lucky person, everything will go smoothly."
Meng Chao stood silently to the side, handing her a cup of hot soy milk. "Want some?"
Ji Wanqing gratefully accepted the cup, the warmth seeping through the paper cup into her palm. "Thank you so much. You're always so busy, yet you still took the time to come."
Compared to being all alone outside the operating room, having two more people with her was a great comfort to her.
Soon, the stretcher for the operating room arrived.
Ji Wanqing leaned down and whispered in her mother's ear, "Mom, hang in there, I'm waiting for you to come out."
Although Ji's mother was a little nervous, she still managed to smile at her daughter.
As her mother was wheeled into the operating room, the two doors slowly closed, and the "Operating" sign above lit up with a blinding red light. Ji Wanqing felt her breath catch for a moment.
Meng Chao sat with her on a bench outside the operating room, silently offering her companionship.
The surgery lasted for several hours.
When the tightly closed door opened again and the doctors came out one after another, Ji Wanqing almost immediately jumped up from the bench, her legs a little weak, and quickly stepped forward to greet them.
Pei Yu was walking at the front, and the edge of his surgical cap was slightly damp with sweat.
He took off his mask, took a deep breath, and then looked at Ji Wanqing, meeting her questioning gaze.
He nodded slightly to her, his voice slightly hoarse from prolonged concentration, yet carrying a sense of relief.
"I have successfully completed my mission."
Overwhelmed with joy, Ji Wanqing's legs went weak, and she almost lost her balance.
Meng Chao and Pei Yu reached out at the same time, each supporting one of her arms.
Only then did Ji Wanqing feel a little embarrassed, and she subtly withdrew her hand, saying, "Thank you."
Ji's mother was sent to the intensive care unit for postoperative observation.
Pei Yu explained the precautions in detail and told Ji Wanqing that she could go back and rest first, and that she could be transferred back to a regular ward tomorrow if her condition stabilized.
This time, Meng Chao insisted on taking Ji Wanqing home as usual. When they arrived at the apartment building, Meng Chao didn't say anything more, but just gazed at her.
"The surgery was successful, so you can relax a bit, get a good night's sleep, and it's okay to take a few days off from work."
"Yes." Ji Wanqing nodded vigorously. "Thank you so much for spending time with me today, Auntie."
"We're friends, it's only right." Meng Chao smiled. "Go on up."
Returning to her empty home, Ji Wanqing felt a profound sense of exhaustion, as if she had just survived a catastrophe.
She slumped onto the sofa, finally able to look at her phone.
Upon seeing this, I was filled with emotion.
