Chapter 183 An Unrepeatable Escape

At the critical moment, Yun Zhe suddenly felt that it was time to show some personal heroism, otherwise, if the remaining troops were destroyed by the cavalry, there would probably be no hope of turning the tide today.

Yun Zhe picked up several spears from the ground, broke them into shorter pieces, and then threw them at the enemy cavalry like javelins. He kept moving and throwing, quickly killing several cavalrymen and attracting the attention of people on both sides.

"Yun Zhe?! It's Yun Zhe!" Donic's soldiers recognized the pointed ears and the longsword behind him and cheered.

Meanwhile, the opposing side, wondering why these people had suddenly become so energetic, was also considering whether to pursue this annoying pest. Ultimately, they decided to send a cavalry unit specifically to surround and kill Yun Zhe, while the rest would proceed with the original plan to launch a surprise attack.

Yun Zhe did buy a brief moment of time, but it was clearly not enough. The most crucial issue was how to make these people truly understand the danger they were in. However, Yun Zhe also understood that suddenly shouting out his intentions at this moment would not only fail to give them time to react, but might also have the opposite effect, causing them even more confusion.

However, Yun Zhe looked at the Kurman cavalry who were ready to charge and the Donic infantry who did not yet realize how dangerous they were. He thought for a moment, then swung his sword and charged head-on at the cavalry who were preparing to charge.

Yun Zhe couldn't think of a better way, so he could only charge into the enemy's formation alone, trying to disrupt their plans.

Yun Zhe felt that this might be the time to truly reveal his abilities, and it might even be his last battle, or he might even die on this land.

However, Yun Zhe did not want to die in the chaotic pursuit like before; instead, he wanted to at least die with some dignity.

As Yun Zhe charged, he glanced at the troop transport wagon. The horse had been stabbed to death, and the wagon was surrounded by fallen soldiers. Clearly, they had jumped down to fight in desperation, even though there was no chance of survival.

With a spear in one hand and a longsword in the other, Yun Zhe charged forward towards the head of the enemy cavalry formation.

Donic's soldiers were somewhat aware that their loose formation was clearly disadvantageous against cavalry, but they were, after all, a hastily assembled rout force from two defending units that had barely escaped death. There was little communication or coordination between the two sides. Their courage to act largely stemmed from their resentment towards Kurman, or rather, revenge. Therefore, there was virtually no room for responsiveness or adaptation.

Although they moved swiftly, their reactions were slow; their attacks were powerful, but their methods were chaotic. But then they saw Yun Zhe charging alone with his spear towards the enemy cavalry. It was as if someone in the darkness had seen a light, instantly gaining direction and a clear purpose for their actions.

"Charge! Kill!!!" Someone shouted, and Donic's soldiers completely abandoned their defensive formation and charged directly at the enemy cavalry. Several soldiers even climbed onto their newly captured warhorses and moved towards Yun Zhe's direction.

The soldiers who had escaped on horseback from the initial grain transport team, after a brief moment of thought upon realizing they were no longer being pursued, also turned their horses around and charged towards Kurman's cavalry.

Standing atop Fort Dorgnitz, the Kurman garrison commander Holden looked on in bewilderment at the incredible change below the city. Over three hundred infantrymen were about to charge their cavalry hundred.

What he found even more incomprehensible was what kind of courage it took for these people to fight back so recklessly, disregarding their own lives.

Yun Zhe, charging forward, was naturally aware of the changes around him, and could only manage a bitter smile. Clearly, these Donic soldiers had misunderstood him. But it was alright; morale was high, and this charge was better than having their formation broken and being slaughtered.

The cavalry, already intimidated by Yun Zhe's imposing presence, were even more bewildered by the situation before them. A charge? Infantry against cavalry? Was this a suicide mission? After a brief moment of shock, Kurman's cavalry quickly reacted, relying on their superior military skills, and immediately launched a deadly charge against the reckless infantry.

In that instant, both sides, whether infantry or cavalry, believed they had victory in their grasp and were certain to win the battle. However, the Donic infantry's confidence stemmed from an Aluru man named Yunzhe. The Kurman cavalry's confidence, on the other hand, came from their accumulated training and invaluable experience gained in battle.

On the plains north of Dorgnitzburg, a small-scale infantry-cavalry duel began.

The outcome of the duel seemed not much to Holden's surprise; the cavalry did indeed inflict heavy casualties. However, the result also exceeded Holden's expectations, because in the end, it was Donic's infantry who stood on the battlefield, and quite a few of them.

Standing atop the high city wall, he naturally couldn't fathom every detail of this war, one that would likely never be repeated. For instance, the core lethal weapon of the Donic infantry wasn't spears and swords, but crossbows. The cavalry, with their scattered and sprawling lines, weren't focused on cutting off or flanking maneuvers, but rather on a single, head-on charge to end the battle. Thus, they inadvertently weakened their advantages. Furthermore, the soldiers' performance was likely closely related to the sun's orientation. Cavalry facing the sun naturally had a less comfortable view than infantry with their backs to the sun, even if the difference was slight. Finally, there was a saying never before heard in the Western Continent: "An army driven by desperation will surely win." Who says the will of the people isn't a crucial factor in victory or defeat?

Therefore, the legend of the Donic infantry's fearlessness of cavalry in later generations is not true. At least, this battle was not as miraculous as later generations described.

Yun Zhe had no intention of cleaning up the battlefield. He was worried that the enemy would send another cavalry unit to pursue them, so he led his troops north in haste and hid in the nearby forest.

In this desperate charge, he single-handedly plunged into the enemy cavalry. His horse was killed instantly, forcing him to rely on his speed to break free of the enemy lines. He then became an infantryman, inflicting heavy casualties with his crossbows. Fortunately, his sword and armor were conspicuous, preventing the morale of his troops from collapsing again. The charge of the dozen or so scattered cavalrymen also served to slow down the enemy. This allowed this confrontation, which he had little chance of winning, to achieve a reasonably good result.

Another reason for Yun Zhe's hasty retreat, which he couldn't reveal, was that he felt he was losing control of his bloodlust again. This had been happening more and more frequently lately, causing Yun Zhe considerable distress.
