Yun Zhe stood outside the north gate of Dorgnitzburg, pondering whether to make a big fuss or carry out a quiet assassination.
In the distance, torches flickered on the castle walls, swaying in the wind. Yun Zhe couldn't help but think of the wooden houses in the valley village and the days when everyone huddled together.
"You lie buried beneath the earth, your bones turned to dust, while I remain in this world, my head covered in snow." Yun Zhe flicked his longsword, then grinned as he stared at the two guards before him, who remained oblivious to the impending danger.
"Halt! Who goes there!" The guard saw a short, small figure slowly approaching them.
“The rest are the superfluous people in this world,” Yun Zhe said.
"Playing tricks!" Probably because they saw that Yun Zhe's figure was not tall in the firelight, the guards became bolder and thrust their spears forward.
Yun Zhe spun around, dodging the spear, and closed in on the soldier. His ghostly movements startled both guards. But before they could even shout "Attack!"
Yun Zhe's sword had already severed the heads of the two men.
Yun Zhe swayed slightly; the smell of blood was rather strong. Maybe he should just…
"No, no!" Yun Zhe desperately restrained his desires. He had finally managed to change things with Ellie, and he couldn't go back to the way things were before.
"But we absolutely have to have one tonight."
Just like the hero in the game before his transmigration, Yun Zhe, alone with his sword, began to challenge the entire castle.
A patrol of soldiers spotted Yun Zhe, shouted at him, and then surrounded him. Yun Zhe didn't hold back and immediately took all ten men down.
However, these ten people still did something befitting their status: they spread the word about the existence of assassins.
Yun Zhe's somewhat impulsive actions this time stemmed from not initially investigating how many people remained in the castle. However, according to his estimation, the castle should logically be able to accommodate no more than a thousand troops. Adding the cavalry from today's field battle and those already deployed, the number of soldiers inside the castle should be even smaller.
Yun Zhe's judgment was correct; there were only infantrymen in the castle, a mere six hundred men.
Although the castle had a complex network of roads and numerous rooms with concealed structures, the presence of over six hundred people, surrounded on all sides, still made it difficult to defend against.
At first, Yun Zhe relied on the small number of troops that arrived and his familiarity with the terrain to kill several patrol teams in succession. However, as the number of enemy troops increased and the area shrank, the space left for Yun Zhe to maneuver and move around became smaller and smaller.
Yun Zhe tore off a strip of cloth and stuffed it into his nose, then flicked the blood off his sword. He had just cut down two more very tall guards. Both guards were fully armored and quite skilled in martial arts.
What Yun Zhe was facing was a long corridor, at the end of which was a lonely door.
That's where the commander lives, that's usually the case.
“If we keep going forward, there’s no turning back,” Yun Zhe muttered to himself.
Yun Zhe stood at the entrance of the corridor, listening to the clanging of armor and weapons clashing downstairs growing ever closer. He couldn't help but shake his head and smile bitterly.
That's definitely the commander's residence up ahead. But what we'll be facing next are probably five or six hundred crazed warriors.
Without hesitation, Yun Zhe rushed to the door and kicked it open.
With a whoosh, a crossbow bolt shot towards Yun Zhe. It was a simple door-opening mechanism. Yun Zhe slightly shifted his position, and the bolt struck his shoulder, continuing its trajectory as it flew far out of the house.
Inside the room, Holden, fully armed, stood by the window, longsword in hand, ready for battle. He seemed to have anticipated Yun Zhe's arrival.
Holden was slightly taken aback when he saw that the trap hadn't completely killed Yun Zhe. But he immediately recognized the person in front of him.
It was that Aruru man who charged at the cavalry on horseback that afternoon!
Yun Zhe glanced down the corridor and saw dozens of soldiers already lined up in a dense formation, slowly advancing.
Shields, spears, and bows and arrows!
Yun Zhe suddenly rushed towards Holden, not really to kill him in one blow, but to dodge the dense rain of arrows.
Holden knew he was in grave danger; if he could survive until the soldiers flooded into the room, he had a chance to live.
Although the man before them was formidable, having killed dozens of soldiers, including two of his own personally trained guards, he was also a master swordsman, far superior in skill to those soldiers.
Despite this in mind, Holden still opted for a cautious approach. In short, he stalled.
After all, numbers matter. Wait until the soldiers have their bows and arrows blocking your way, then you'll be riddled with arrows!
However, as soon as Holden and Yun Zhe took over, they discovered that something was amiss.
The opponent is faster, stronger, and smaller than me!
Then Holden stopped lamenting. His hand was severed by Yun Zhe's sword, and then his throat was cut open by Yun Zhe's sword.
Holden's loyal soldiers rushed into the house and saw Yun Zhe holding their general's head and slitting his throat with his sword.
Fire the arrows!!!
Someone shouted, and seven or eight arrows shot towards Yun Zhe.
Yun Zhe hid behind Holden, thus avoiding the first volley of arrows. The soldiers panicked when they saw all their arrows embedded in their general's body.
Yun Zhe snorted. He shoved Holden's corpse aside, then leaned against the window and leaped out.
Several alert soldiers rushed to the window and fired arrows. But it was just a show; they could no longer see Yun Zhe falling. They only fired a few arrows instinctively.
The commotion outside the window resumed. Yun Zhe's landing spot after jumping out of the tower wasn't ideal, as many soldiers swarmed below and spotted him.
"Chase them!!"
"Kill! Kill the assassin!"
Despite Yun Zhe's excellent physical condition and the help of the wall to slow his descent, he still ended up limping during the freefall.
Fortunately, it didn't prevent him from fighting his way out.
Having left that deadly corridor, Yun Zhe suddenly felt a sense of vastness in the world. He continued to fight, utilizing the terrain and his soldiers.
This time, however, his primary objective was to retreat.
But killing someone and then trying to leave was clearly not something the surrendered Belvedere soldiers would tolerate.
After all, if word gets out, it will damage their image...
So the soldiers, as if injected with adrenaline, sealed off Fort Dorgnitz, vowing to make this assassin pay for his crime in blood.
Yun Zhe charged around the castle, but gradually felt his strength waning.
The encirclement formed by the soldiers was getting tighter, and with the threat of crossbow bolts and arrows, coupled with the accumulation of their own injuries, the situation felt increasingly out of control.
Another breakout attempt saw Yun Zhe forced back by a dozen or so arrows. He was forced to hide in a secluded corner of the castle. But he couldn't hide for long before the soldiers discovered him again. After a fierce battle, Yun Zhe was completely surrounded by soldiers from all sides.
Facing the densely packed soldiers and gleaming arrows on the city walls, in the square, and on the rooftops, Yun Zhe could only manage a bitter smile once more.
"Looks like my identity is really going to be exposed this time."
