Yun Zhe was aware of all three men's thoughts. What they all shared was the desire to become stronger. The differences lay in their motivations: Sancho primarily focused on his own growth, Elke on enhancing the overall combat effectiveness of the entire force, while Valentine envisioned, as Yun Zhe had suggested, establishing a special combat squad capable of achieving the same effect as Yun Zhe alone.
Clearly, the three hadn't had any in-depth communication, or perhaps their conversation had caused some changes in them. Yun Zhe didn't care about any of that; he squatted down, then simply sat on the ground, watching the three of them.
Yun Zhe's actions left the three of them somewhat at a loss. After hesitating for a moment, they all sat down on the ground.
"Do you all want to become like me? Or do you want to form a small team that's just as powerful?"
Sancho and Valentine's eyes lit up, while Elke looked somewhat bewildered. Neither of them were what he wanted. What he wanted was a formidable army—not just one person, not just a few, but hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands. While they might not all be like Yun Zhe, at least they could avoid such a crushing defeat against someone like Yun Zhe.
"It's probably difficult for them to become as strong as me, but I do have some methods to improve the abilities of soldiers," Yun Zhe said confidently.
“Actually, I heard the captain mention it,” Elke said in a low voice, referring to the now-deceased Mobik. “The adults have many fascinating things, and the captain told us some of them…”
Yun Zhe felt a pang of pain in his heart, then took a deep breath. "I feel that your ideas are actually quite different, but what I can do, and what is easiest to do at this stage, is to improve the soldiers' abilities. But you say it's difficult to improve them to my level."
"No need... sir, I don't need to be as good as you. As long as I can improve to some extent, that would be great," Sancho hurriedly said.
"Then let's start today. All of you, except for the soldiers on guard and on patrol, assemble and begin today's first training session!" Yun Zhe said, then stood up and gestured for them to leave.
Yun Zhe's plan to train these hundred-plus people was partly driven by personal motives. After all, it was uncertain how long the castle would need to be defended, and stronger soldiers would lead to a better outcome.
After all, I brought them here, so I have to be responsible for them.
The three seemed to understand Yun Zhe's intentions to some extent. Although they differed somewhat from their own ideas, becoming stronger was a good thing. In this world, if they had half of Yun Zhe's abilities, they could probably roam freely anywhere.
And since everyone has become stronger, I've actually become safer too.
Yun Zhe looked at the people gathering in the square in the center of the castle, and without thinking too much, he also came to the square.
Without much conversation, Yun Zhe began by having everyone practice simple drills. Clearly, the soldiers lacked coordination, especially the mixed formation of mercenaries and regular soldiers. However, Yun Zhe wasn't alarmed; this was all within his expectations, and in fact, it gave him a strange sense of peace.
After a long period of poor drill practice, one group of soldiers could finally walk in a barely straight line from one end of the square to the other. The other soldiers, however, seemed to need much more practice.
As the sun began to set, several soldiers rode into the castle.
"Cavalry! The cavalry are attacking!"
"Nearly two hundred cavalrymen are heading this way and will be here soon!"
Yun Zhe was somewhat surprised that these cavalrymen actually wanted to attack the city at night.
The drills were temporarily put to a halt, and the soldiers quickly gathered on the city wall, preparing for the upcoming battle to attack and defend the city.
As a result, Kuhlmann's cavalry did not attack, and Yun Zhe did not see a single cavalryman appear under the city walls until sunset.
The soldiers relaxed, and their tense mood quickly turned into immense ease.
Not far away, Sancho was sternly criticizing the returning cavalrymen, "What's all the fuss about? How far away are the cavalrymen? Why are you all shouting like this? Where are they?"
The soldiers didn't dare to speak, knowing they had overreacted and made everyone's efforts futile.
Sancho was still not satisfied after finishing the training. The drill this afternoon was particularly bad, with no progress at all, which made him very upset. On top of that, he was hungry and had been nervous for a long time but nothing happened, so he was even more irritable.
Valentine walked up to Yun Zhe and said sincerely, "My lord, I had doubts about your judgment, but today's events have truly proven your foresight. I think the enemy will definitely not choose to attack the city."
Yun Zhe was not at ease despite hearing such obvious flattery. He frowned, carefully looked around, and fell into deep thought.
Yun Zhe was extremely cautious at this moment. Although the other side had not attacked, and indeed, as he said, was very likely to arrive that night and attack the next day, Yun Zhe did not use this to conclude that the other side would actually do so.
If I were the commander of this cavalry, what would I do when faced with this castle?
Yun Zhe looked at the soldiers around him. Most of them were lying on one side of the city wall, either sitting or lying down, loudly demanding food and drink.
Seeing that Yun Zhe, after hearing his words, not only didn't laugh but became even more silent, Valentine followed Yun Zhe's gaze and saw the undisciplined soldiers. He immediately understood the source of Yun Zhe's dissatisfaction, so he walked over and used his feet to make the soldiers stand up one by one.
Yun Zhe looked at Valentine's behavior and suddenly realized what was going on.
