Chapter 202 Shadows and Thorns

Cyrus's proposal was indeed beyond Yun Zhe's expectations. The first request was fine, but as for the second request, what did he mean by "when I am needed"? And what did "going back" mean? Did he mean going back by himself, or did he mean going back with troops?

Yun Zhe was lost in thought, while Cyrus nervously watched Yun Zhe's facial expression. He had indeed taken advantage of Yun Zhe's predicament to offer a huge price, and he was confident that Yun Zhe wouldn't refuse. However, he was also worried that Yun Zhe might use some reason to back down completely, rejecting the offer and leaving. Secondly, he also had a slight concern that Yun Zhe might actually have that much money, or perhaps some but not much, and that the negotiation might become fruitless.

Yun Zhe snapped out of his thoughts and nodded. "That reason isn't unreasonable, but what will your soldiers think if you don't have money? What will the country think?"

Cyrus was overjoyed, not expecting Yun Zhe to agree so readily. He waved his hand and laughed, "You don't need to worry about that, hahaha, it's good that you agreed to come. They won't mind. You may not know, but in their hearts, you are more valuable than that money."

Yun Zhe was slightly surprised. He truly didn't know that he held such a high place in the hearts of these mercenaries. It was hard to imagine what he had done to earn such respect from them, making them willing to forgo their money to bring him back.

Seeing Yun Zhe's expression, Cyrus's smile deepened. He patted Yun Zhe's shoulder and said, "The poet, it was that person called the poet who told your story. Besides him, everyone else has heard a lot about you during this time. In any case, you are indeed worthy of their kindness, and they think you are worthy."

Cyrus's words did not make Yun Zhe feel at ease. He knew what stories the poet could tell, and he could roughly guess what they could find out, but making such a judgment made Yun Zhe suddenly feel a lot of pressure. He couldn't help but wonder if he should just pay up directly.

But seeing the hopeful and relaxed looks in the eyes of the other Aluru people around him, Yun Zhe dismissed the thought. He was a transmigrator, a vampire, but beyond these unspeakable identities, he was indeed an Aluru. Thinking of this, Yun Zhe suddenly laughed. Was this karma? Because of his Aluru identity, he was destined to be inextricably linked to these Aluru people, wasn't he?

"Since that's the case, then I'll take on this responsibility as a way of repaying this body and this interesting fate." Yun Zhe felt relieved. He stopped dwelling on these things, shook his head, and began to think about his defense plan.

The key right now is to defend this castle.

Just then, as darkness began to fall, a cloud of dust rose in the distance from the castle.

Yun Zhe's spirits lifted, and he stared blankly at the cloud of dust in the distance. It arrived so quickly, much earlier than expected.

Soon, everyone in the castle noticed the plume of dust, clearly raised by a troop of cavalry. As the dust drew closer, Yun Zhe was the first to notice the oddity of the situation. He had assumed it was Kurman's vanguard, or at the very least, scouts. But to his surprise, the approaching cavalry wore diverse armor and carried a jumble of banners, yet one banner stood out strikingly clearly: the green and white checkered banner of the Galician royal family.

"The Royal Legion?!" After Yun Zhe recounted what he had seen, everyone around him exchanged bewildered glances, wondering how the Royal Legion could have gotten here. They shouldn't be a hundred miles away...

"Sir, could it be a fake?" Elke asked with some concern.

Yun Zhe somewhat admired the young man's caution; this was not only possible, but also highly likely.

The cavalry disappeared into the woods near the castle, and the dust gradually settled. Once inside, the cavalry had clearly slowed their pace and concealed their movements. Those on the castle walls, witnessing this, began to speculate about their motives. If it was an attack on the castle, then their silent advance now seemed unnecessary; if not, then their actions were even more perplexing. Just as everyone was pondering this, an even larger cloud of dust rose in the distance, and the sounds of battle cries could be faintly heard, their force no less than that of a thousand men.

"Celes, do we have any cavalry?" Yun Zhe asked.

Cyrus shook his head awkwardly. "My lord, cavalry is too much of a luxury for us. We are at best infantry on horseback. We are far from being true cavalry."

Yun Zhe nodded, "Go, pull Morrison up here and let him see!"

Cyrus looked at Valentine with a puzzled expression, and Valentine immediately gave a brief explanation of Morrison's situation.

When Morrison brought them up, the second cavalry force was already very close, and their banners could be seen; they were the banners of the Kurman army.

Upon seeing the flag, Morrison's pupils dilated sharply. He immediately understood why he had been brought up here, and he knew that the moment of life and death for him had arrived. Beyond the shock, Morrison felt mostly pain and helplessness.

From a distance, Kurman's cavalry could also see the woods near the castle and the flags flying on the castle. Donic's flag fluttered in the wind, and many people were vaguely visible standing on the castle.

The captain of the Kurman cavalry stretched out his hand, signaling his troops to slow down. He vaguely sensed something was amiss. The woods before them and the distant castle seemed like a beast with its jaws wide open, waiting for them to charge in.

Although there were very clear signs that the more than three hundred cavalrymen they were chasing had already rushed into the woods, he did not want his troops to risk entering the woods to search for the three hundred routed soldiers.

The Kurman cavalry halted about a hundred meters from the woods, forming three ranks facing the forest and the castle, standing silently. No one spoke, no horses neighed; only their banners fluttered in the wind.

Yun Zhe frowned. He instinctively realized that the cavalry unit in front of him was extraordinary. They were very elite, extremely elite, surpassing the elite of any cavalry unit he had ever seen.

In the woods, Blaze gripped his spear tightly, and his men were equally tense, bows and crossbows aimed at the distance, waiting for the cavalry to ride into the sparse forest.

About fifteen minutes later, the pursuing Kurman cavalry did not rush into the woods, but instead turned their horses around and withdrew from the area.

Yun Zhe took a deep breath and looked at Morrison beside him. "Morrison, are you familiar with this cavalry unit?"

Morrison was dumbfounded. He wasn't shocked that Kurman's cavalry had arrived without charging, but rather by the very cavalry unit itself. Early in the war, Marquis Kurman had claimed they had been utterly wiped out on the initial battlefield. This was one of the reasons they had lost all will to fight and were forced to flee. And now, they had reappeared before Morrison, which indeed caused him some confusion.

Yun Zhe looked at the dazed Morrison and felt even worse. So he impatiently grunted in response.

Morrison suddenly realized, and looking at Yun Zhe, he said in a trembling voice, "I know them. They are the pride of the Kurman forces, the most elite cavalry unit, Shadow Thorns."
