Yun Zhe lunged forward and embraced Akdina, whose mind was reeling from disbelief. He swiftly pulled all the wooden arrows from Akdina's body. Fortunately, Akdina had protected her vital organs and didn't die immediately, though she was temporarily unable to move.
Seeing their crossbow bolts had worked, the remaining Belvalian soldiers abandoned their escape plans. One of them, clearly their new leader, quickly explained to them that running away meant certain death, while fighting offered a sliver of hope. The remaining dozen or so Belvalian soldiers obviously understood this. They had decided to kill the two vampires in front of them first; as for the ordinary soldiers behind them, vampires could be killed, so why couldn't humans?
After a series of loading sounds, another volley of crossbow bolts came flying. Yun Zhe steeled himself and stood in front of Akdina, desperately blocking the barrage of arrows. Thanks to his thick armor and preparation, the crossbow bolts did not cause any serious injury to Yun Zhe this time. However, one bolt still managed to slip through the net and hit Akdina in the thigh.
Yun Zhe quickly pulled out the wooden arrow, looked at Akdina's pale face, gritted his teeth, bit open the back of his hand, and sent the blood into Akdina's mouth.
Akdina was in so much pain that she was almost delirious, and she bit down hard.
Yun Zhe turned to look at the soldiers, who were nearly driven mad. They were nocking their crossbows; soon, the third volley of arrows would come, and he might truly have no choice but to use his body to shield them from the rain of arrows. And in that case, he might end up like Akdina now. Not only would he fail to save Akdina, but his vampire identity would likely be exposed as well.
But tonight, Yun Zhe wasn't thinking about that anymore. He was a little tired and just wanted to save as many people as possible. He really didn't care about his own fate.
Just like the choices he made before he came into this world, even at the very last moment, he tried his best to take care of those around him, rather than himself.
The third wave of arrows arrived as expected. Yun Zhe looked at Akdina, who was still greedily sucking blood, and smiled slightly. He closed his eyes, then hugged her tightly, waiting for fate to decide his fate.
Suddenly, a multitude of complex thoughts flooded Yun Zhe's mind. The rain of arrows didn't fall on him and Akdina. Instead, Yun Zhe heard Valentine and Elke's roars as they rushed in front of him, blocking the barrage of arrows. A flurry of footsteps filled Yun Zhe's ears as countless figures gathered around him and Akdina, completely surrounding them.
"grown ups!"
"My lord, are you alright, my lord!"
"My lord, Akdina, we've arrived!"
Yun Zhe opened his eyes and saw the crowd surrounding them like an iron barrel. For some reason, he suddenly felt an urge to cry.
