The war was fierce and rapid.
When Yun Zhe rushed to the side of the half-collapsed city wall, the raging black smoke had already shot into the sky.
Yun Zhe grabbed the nearest soldier and asked, "Why did you set it on fire so quickly?"
The soldier, without turning his head, looked at the raging fire and said, "It was set by the Lunlang family. They rushed up and set our car on fire. Ah, Knight Yun Zhe, please forgive my rudeness just now..." When the soldier saw that it was Yun Zhe, he hurriedly saluted.
Yun Zhe waved his hand, indicating that it was nothing serious. "Quickly tell Gao to go to the house we prepared in advance. Hurry, it will be too late once the car burns out!"
The soldier obeyed and left, then suddenly realized a question: "How did he know I was Gao's subordinate?"
But time no longer allowed him to think about these issues.
The city wall changed hands almost instantly. This time, the Lunlang family's soldiers charged and attacked fiercely as if they were on stimulants, completely different from their performance in the previous two days.
Andrew wiped the blood from his face; he had only a few trusted followers left. Meanwhile, Philby was engaged in a fierce battle near the city gate, fighting desperately against soldiers who were coming down from the wall to open it.
"Forget about the gate!" Andrew shouted as he ran towards Philby. "The low wall has been breached! Retreat into the alley!"
Clearly, Philby didn't want this to happen. Although he was at a lower position, several of his soldiers, carrying large shields, completely blocked the area around the stairs, effectively hindering the enemy's advance. Meanwhile, his other men fired at the soldiers on the stairs from all sides, making them easy targets – a very effective strategy.
As Andrew charged forward, several arrows rained down from the sky. Fortunately, a servant pushed him aside, saving him from the brink of death.
Seeing his entourage fall, Andrew's anger flared. "Damn it, Philby, have you forgotten what we said that night? You bastard, get back here right now, or don't blame me for disregarding our old friendship!"
Philby looked reluctantly at the position before him. Nearly a hundred soldiers remained, crammed around the gate, a position that could be used to create a strong defensive line. But Philby remembered their discussion that night: "Holding the walls to the death will only exhaust us. Moving troops inside the castle is the best way to buy time." Philby bit his lip. "Retreat! Everyone, retreat! See that alleyway? Retreat! Retreat!"
Andrew breathed a sigh of relief, but the scene before him soon made him feel uneasy.
More than a hundred soldiers rushed into the alley, but they still couldn't dodge the arrows from the Lunlang family overhead.
Nearly a third of the men were shot dead in that short distance of just over ten meters. The soldiers providing cover, carrying large shields, were quickly and completely overwhelmed by the Lunlang family's soldiers, who were no longer under pressure. Seeing this devastating loss, Philby's eyes reddened. He rushed to Andrew, and without a word, delivered a powerful punch to him.
Andrew didn't speak, taking the punch squarely. Tears welled in his eyes. "I swear I'll avenge them."
Philby said nothing, he spat under his breath, then turned and led his soldiers in another direction.
The gates of Donic Castle were finally opened, and more soldiers poured in to begin the victors' reckoning.
Based on past experience, the castle's defenders should be preparing to surrender at this point, while the attacking side should also put on a show of surrender, but those who should be killed will still be killed, and those who should be imprisoned will still be imprisoned.
However, the garrison at Donic Castle today does not seem to intend to follow past practices; they are still resisting in groups of three or five, or even a dozen or twenty people.
Eager to demonstrate their courage, the soldiers of the Lunlang family, perhaps also angered by the unorthodox tactics of the Donic family's garrison, began to fight the Donic family street by street and alley by alley.
Yun Zhe finally witnessed the cruelty of medieval warfare. Compared to today's experience, the siege battles of the past few days were really nothing; it was just a matter of poking around with long spears from a high vantage point.
In the narrow alley, you suddenly encounter enemy soldiers, followed by five or six spears thrusting at you from all angles. Unless you can contort your body into a special shape in an instant, you'll be riddled with holes.
Yun Zhe encountered this situation once. He raised his shield, his longsword slicing off two spearheads, but he was still pierced in the shoulder by a spear. The spearman who pierced him twisted his body in the process, and if it weren't for the fact that his vampire body was tough enough, this blow would have almost dislocated half of his arm.
Yun Zhe quickly retreated half a step. Seeing that Yun Zhe was injured, the spearmen were even more delighted and raised their spears to launch another simultaneous thrust.
Yun Zhe rolled over, and several archers emerged from the eaves on both sides, firing a burst of arrows that killed the six soldiers on the spot.
Yun Zhe struggled to his feet. He glared at the soldiers on either side, somewhat annoyed. "Why are you so slow? Hurry up and get out of there, or one of you will be the next bait!"
The soldiers dared not utter a sound. They had encountered this knight at the end of an alley, when they were being chased by a dozen or so soldiers from the Lunlang family. This knight had single-handedly dealt with all the enemies. Afterwards, he had even taught them how to lure and ambush. Although they had already killed many enemies through such ambushes that day, the soldiers acting as bait had also suffered heavy losses. Seeing this, the knight had once again volunteered to act as bait, which filled the soldiers with admiration and gratitude.
