Fifty-nine Drills

Finally, Yun Zhe was no longer troubled by the children's daily mischief. Once the children's thirst for knowledge was aroused, teaching became much easier. A few days later, Andrew also found a tutor who could help Yun Zhe share most of the work, allowing Yun Zhe to finally have time to train his troops.

Indeed, training the army is what Yun Zhe wants to do most right now.

Although the battle to relieve Donic's siege was brilliantly planned and the outcome met everyone's expectations, Yun Zhe felt a deep sense of powerlessness and frustration. Especially the days they spent circling among the refugees to return to Pas, despite escaping danger, made him increasingly angry and frustrated. He was very dissatisfied with the performance of Andrew's troops, questioning their slow marching speed. He didn't know if the armies of this world were just so lazy, or if Andrew was deliberately making things difficult for him.

Upon returning to the border of the Pas family, Yun Zhe immediately sought out Andrew, wanting to see what the baron was really up to. Although Andrew felt slightly guilty, he still refuted Yun Zhe, arguing that the marching speed Yun Zhe described was simply impossible. Even with fine weather, without the torrential rain, it was impossible to reach the pre-arranged positions and set up an ambush in just three to five days.

Yun Zhe initially thought Andrew was making excuses, but he could see through people's thoughts and had to reluctantly admit that Andrew wasn't actually making excuses; rather, everyone felt that Yun Zhe's timing was flawed. Or rather, the Ars family was too eager to save their home and rushed ahead too quickly. However, in the hearts of all the knights, Andrew had no problem; it was just that Yun Zhe had miscalculated the timing, becoming a rather flawed link in this perfect plan.

Upon learning the truth, Yun Zhe immediately deflated. His initial aggressive demeanor turned into a helpless self-deprecating remark.

Yun Zhe's timeline for this project was calculated based on the marching speeds of ancient armies he had studied in his previous life's elective courses. Although the aesthetics of the two worlds weren't significantly different, the gap in warfare seemed ridiculously large.

When Yun Zhe initially recruited soldiers from the refugees, his intention was to counter Andrew and protect himself. Building his own army, while not necessarily a means to seize power through force, would at least prevent him from facing such dangers and fleeing in disarray again. However, after a debate, he suddenly felt it was pointless. The other side was simply slow to act; they didn't have any malicious intentions. Ultimately, it was his own lack of understanding of the world and his overreaction.

So after the argument, Yun Zhe stopped thinking about his army. Caroline approached Yun Zhe several times, wanting him to begin the training he had promised during their escape, but Yun Zhe always refused, citing the lack of a formal military position. Left with no other option, the disappointed young man could only practice silently on his own.

But the young man persisted, repeatedly questioning Yun Zhe. After several attempts, the young man's expression worsened, and his impression of Andrew and Serena deteriorated. His words were filled with resentment. Yun Zhe felt somewhat awkward, so he doubled the training exercises for the soldiers from his past life and gave them to Caroline. Caroline went happily. However, he never contacted Yun Zhe again after that. Curious, Yun Zhe went to check on him and found that the young man had overtrained and injured himself, now bedridden.

Yun Zhe felt quite guilty. He thought that although these people had been misled by him, they only wanted to reclaim their hometown through battle. He had given them hope, and now they wanted to give up; that would truly make him a scoundrel who manipulated people's hearts.

Moreover, in Yun Zhe's view, they would have to go to the battlefield sooner or later, and if they were better trained, their chances of survival would be much higher. After all, Yun Zhe didn't want to see these young men win the war but be unable to return home.

With this thought in mind, Yun Zhe finally rediscovered the significance of training an army. Acting on his idea without hesitation, Yun Zhe immediately sought out Andrew to reclaim command of the troops. He then reduced the training load and began using the military knowledge he had acquired in his previous life to train the army, hoping this would allow them to survive a little longer in this chaotic world.

However, Yun Zhe's ambitions were delayed for more than ten days by a group of children. Fortunately, the two captains were strict in their training, and Yun Zhe had arranged only basic strength training, so the delay was not too great.

On a windless evening, Yun Zhe finally met all the soldiers from his two units. Gao's hundred-man squad had dwindled to only fifty-odd men, while Caroline's hundred-man squad had grown to over forty men, making the two squads roughly equal in size.

Faced with Yun Zhe's questioning gaze, Gao felt somewhat ashamed. Although he had chosen the 60% training plan, many people still couldn't handle the intensity and left. In contrast, Caroline's team had an even more intense training regimen and had added more than ten people. The contrast made Gao feel both distressed and guilty.

Yun Zhe patted Gao on the shoulder, knowing how Gao felt, and comforted him, "Don't be sad. You train just for training, while they train to reclaim their homeland. Your training goals are different, so naturally, different results will occur. It's not entirely your fault. Don't blame yourself too much."

After speaking, he looked at Gao's soldiers, who were lined up fairly neatly, and said, "Soldiers, in three months at most, we will be heading to the battlefield. On the battlefield, what seems like a safe task—transporting supplies—is actually the most dangerous job. Because all the enemies will think you are incapable of fighting, while you possess what they need most on the battlefield. Therefore, all the enemies will target you. Of course, you will be well protected in peacetime, but on the battlefield, who will protect you forever?! When the forces protecting you are committed to the battle, when the situation is critical, you will be the first to be abandoned. Am I exaggerating? Am I just talking nonsense? Think back to what you have heard and seen—isn't that the case?!"
