There are no stars or moonlight tonight.
The rhythmic clatter of hooves echoed through the night, not loud, but carrying a chilling quality.
Tordron's revenge was swift and decisive, not because he was blinded by grief and anger over the deaths of his friends and family, but because he knew that no one believed the superior side would launch a night attack in this battle.
His reason for attacking was to catch people off guard. It's just that too few people understand him.
Yun Zhe was the first to wake up; he vaguely heard some sound, but he wasn't sure.
Then he saw that Ellie had also woken up.
"A sneak attack?"
The two had the same idea. Ellie jumped out of the carriage, lay on the ground and listened for a while, then stood up with a serious expression.
"A considerable number of cavalry, at least one hundred or more."
Yun Zhe immediately began waking up the soldiers around him, and the commotion in Yun Zhe's camp also alerted the people around him.
Philby was the first to jump up when he heard the sound. He ran out of the tent and saw Yunzhe's camp preparing horses.
"What's going on, Yun Zhe? What are you doing so late?"
A chaotic sound from afar answered Philby.
"Elves!!!" someone screamed in the camp, their voice breaking with anguish. Then the scream abruptly stopped.
Humans never expected the elves to launch a sneak attack, especially with the use of cavalry.
Tordron showed no mercy. His 230 elven cavalrymen, divided into 12 squads, moved like two serpents through the human camp, causing immense chaos and casualties.
After one assault, Tordron rallied his soldiers and launched another piercing attack, like a sharp knife.
This time, they encountered resistance. Yun Zhe and Philby gathered their few dozen cavalrymen and charged forward with reckless ferocity to cover the retreat of the wounded and other soldiers.
The human cavalry charged toward the elves with a sense of certain death. Usha knelt behind the carriage, watching the cavalry unit recede into the distance, a strange tension rising in her heart. She seemed to have seen this scene before, but the memory was too hazy for her to recall clearly.
The entire human force was scattering and fleeing, trying to get away from the range that the elven cavalry might reach. At this moment, a human cavalry unit moving in the opposite direction attracted a lot of attention.
Many people spotted the cavalry. Arthas's eyesight wasn't good, and he generally had difficulty seeing distant objects at night. However, being a seasoned warrior, he clearly sensed the imposing presence of that force. Trembling, he gripped his saddle and asked the soldier beside him, "Whose unit was that just past...?"
"Reporting to you, sir, it seems to be Lord Philby's troops," a cavalryman said nervously, his helmet askew.
“Philby…” Arthas looked over with some doubt. He had a good impression of Philby, but this behavior was still beyond his understanding of this middle-aged man.
Serena also spotted the unit amidst the chaos, but she clearly recognized Yun Zhe. Compared to the other soldiers, Yun Zhe's attire was all too familiar to her.
"Zade, how many cavalry do you have left?"
“My lord,” Zade glanced at the cavalry in the distance, vaguely guessing Serena’s thoughts, and frowned, “we don’t have many cavalry, but…”
"Hmm?" Serena tilted her head.
"Our mission is to ensure your safety, sir," Zade said awkwardly, revealing his thoughts.
Serena looked at the cavalrymen, her chest heaving more and more noticeably.
Blake was not far away; he saw the cavalry troop and, more importantly, he saw Serena's expression. His eyes flickered, and his expression showed some worry.
Newrent had certainly seen the unit, but he merely scoffed at the commander's lack of basic strategic acumen. In his mind, the most important thing at that moment was to find Serena and get to her side. What was the point of a counter-attack? Even if Serena saw him, would he survive? Since his decision earlier that day had taken effect, he seemed to have had an epiphany, gaining a much clearer understanding.
Yun Zhe and Philby, of course, didn't consider these issues. Their decision to charge stemmed from basic common sense: scattering and fleeing would only result in being torn apart by the cavalry. They didn't need to defeat the cavalry; simply slowing them down would save the rest of the soldiers in the battle.
"But we'll probably never come back. Even so, you still have to come," Yun Zhe said to Philby before he left.
Philby nodded without hesitation. "You have too few soldiers. I have thirty-odd cavalrymen. That should be enough."
However, when they rushed to the vicinity of the elven forces, they discovered that the disparity in strength between them and the enemy was far greater than they had imagined.
Yun Zhe clearly sensed that everyone's morale had faltered. They were no longer as spirited as they had been when they first set off.
Yun Zhe's breathing quickened as he sensed Philby's fear and hesitation beside him.
"Let's cut them off, then go back through, do it twice, and then run. That should hold them off for a while," Yun Zhe shouted, hoping Philby would cheer up.
Philby's eyes hardened. He nodded, drew his longsword, and shouted, "Men, charge with me!"
Yun Zhe felt much more at ease, drew his Elf King Sword, and shouted towards his troops, "Load the crossbows, charge!"
Tordron looked in surprise at the cavalry that had appeared near them. They charged straight toward their center, intending to cut their troops in half.
In an instant, Tordron understood the enemy's intentions. This wasn't a display of personal heroism; it was the art of sacrificing the lesser to protect the greater good on the battlefield.
The clouds dispersed, and silvery moonlight bathed the battlefield. The cool moonlight and the desolate battlefield were perfectly matched.
Tordron developed a keen interest in this cavalry unit. He pulled down his mask with a cold smile; they were undoubtedly the same unit that had killed his best friend. Moreover, they were a rare sight among human troops—a unit that still possessed fighting spirit.
Destroying them would destroy humanity's last will to resist. It would also avenge his dearest friend.
"Kill them! Leave no one alive from that cavalry unit!"
