A wind picked up; as the sun began to set, a strong wind suddenly arose. Yun Zhe huddled in a tree, listening to the rustling of the leaves in the wind, his mind drifting away. He thought back to the end of his university years, a time of social unrest and frequent crises, when everyone was quite pessimistic about life after graduation. Back then, the prevailing sentiment among university students wasn't about poetry and distant dreams, but rather the more practical concerns of finding work and security. At the graduation ceremony, a classmate from a different department had optimistically told him, "Our architecture department is about to have a once-in-a-century opportunity! After the war, won't everything need our help for construction?" Remembering his classmate's beaming face at that moment, Yun Zhe felt a strange sense of joy.
But for Glass, the leader of the vampire hunters in Garai City, things were far from easy. He stood atop the city wall, the setting sun casting his longest shadow. He gazed anxiously in the direction where the signal had sounded. He had just received several reports confirming the appearance of new vampires near Garai City, and he was now awaiting the triumphant return of the hunters who had been pursuing Barbaro, so he could deal with this new problem. Because at this moment, he only had one hunter left by his side.
To be precise, there is only one vampire hunter left in the entire city of Jialai at this moment.
The hunter was a beautiful young woman with red hair, the same red as Glass's hair beside her. Her pale face was dotted with freckles, almost identical to Glass's. However, Glass was a fat, obese man, while this young woman had a slender waist and long legs, unlike Glass at all. Moreover, Glass was nearly forty years old, while the young woman beside him was clearly much younger, around twenty years old.
"It's been too long, they should have come back long ago," the girl said, swallowing the rest of her sentence as she saw the growing worry on Glass's face.
Glass sighed. "Carrie, go find a beggar and have him go and see what happened."
Carrie blinked. “I can go. I’m more professional and have a better understanding of the situation.”
"No, I was careless in this operation. I sent those bastards out all at once because they were too lazy. But right now, I have a bad feeling, so I absolutely will not let my last card take this risk."
“Father, I’ll go and come back quickly before it gets dark. You have to believe me. I’m a hunter who has killed a vampire on my own. In Jialai, only Mad Axe Ben has that kind of strength.”
"How you killed those vampires, others may not know, but I know it all too well. This time it absolutely won't do; you still need to investigate that newly appeared vampire."
Carrie nodded sullenly. She turned and jumped off the city wall. Seeing this, Glass quickly shouted "Watch out!" and looked down. Carrie had already put away her whip and was making faces at him.
Seeing this, Glass smiled helplessly, "Tsk tsk, you really do have the style I had back in the day." He then turned his head and continued to look at the woods, his eyes showing even more worry.
A caravan appeared at the end of the road, its many carriages and horses accompanied by various mercenaries and wandering swordsmen. Seeing this, Glass hurriedly ran down from the city wall. The caravan slowly entered the city, attracting a large crowd of onlookers. Glass weaved through the crowd, finally managing to squeeze his way out.
Two men who looked like merchants were talking to the guards at the city gate. Glass, seeing an acquaintance, shouted, "Hey, Mike!"
A tall, handsome businessman turned around and saw a round, barrel-shaped man with a head of red hair running towards him. Seeing this, the businessman named Mike's face showed not a smile, but rather sorrow and anger.
Mike's expression startled Glass, who slowed his pace. "What's wrong, old man? Did the deal not go well?"
Mike strode up and slammed Glass against the inner wall of the city gate, his eyes practically spitting fire. "You said it! There are no more vampires near Garai!"
"Wh...what happened?" Glass said, but the ominous feeling grew clearer. He guessed that those people outside the city would not be coming back.
“My brother is dead, Ben, my own brother!” Mike released his grip, as if using his last strength. His hands fell to his sides, and he took two steps back, tears welling in his eyes. “Dead, all dead, more than ten people… all dead!”
Glass opened his eyes wide and let out a strange cry of disbelief.
"I know now." Glass stared blankly, despairingly sliding down the wall. When he reached the ground, his mind was blank, and his gaze wandered around aimlessly, as if searching for even a familiar figure.
“Uncle Mike, Dad!” Carrie looked at the two of them in surprise. She had never seen Uncle Mike so angry and in pain, nor had she ever seen her father so out of control, so dejected and helpless.
"I didn't touch any of the corpses, except for my brother's." As he said this, a carriage carrying a corpse slowly entered the city gate. Most people avoided it, but a few curious onlookers went over to take a look.
The corpse was dressed in black, with a crossbow bolt in each eye and throat.
The horrific manner of death terrified Carrie. But then she looked at her father with suspicion; it was clearly not the work of a vampire.
Glass was also puzzled by what he had seen. Could it be that the hunter hadn't been killed by Barbaro, but had encountered some other opponent?
"It wasn't a vampire who killed him?" Glass's strength seemed to return to his body. He stood up abruptly and looked at Mike, who had a sorrowful expression on his face.
"I don't know, I'm just a businessman. Go and see, I'm going home to bury my brother," Mike said dejectedly as he slowly walked into the city, leaning on his car.
Glass watched Mike's retreating figure, then suddenly stomped her foot. "Carrie, quick, let's go check it out!"
