Chapter 243 A Bolt from the Blue

Heyue sat on the edge of the bed, watching Honghui sleep peacefully. Suddenly, she noticed a small red dot on the skin of his neck that was peeking out from under the blanket.

On a sudden impulse, she reached out to tuck him in, seemingly casually lifting a corner of the blanket.

Heyue frowned, tucked the blanket in, and had already made up her mind, but felt even more burdened.

After arriving at the main hall with the Fourth Prince's wife, a maid served tea and then withdrew. Heyue looked at the Fourth Prince's wife and said, "Fourth Sister-in-law, it would be best to have the best imperial physician in the palace take a look."

Fourth Princess Consort frowned, puzzled: "Why is that?" She leaned forward nervously: "Did you discover something, sister-in-law?"

He Yue shook her head: "I'm not sure either. It would be best if the imperial physician examined her in person."

The Fourth Princess Consort asked no more questions and hurriedly had someone hand her a plaque to enter the palace and invite Dr. Sun, the Imperial Physician.

Fearing he wouldn't be able to persuade her, he personally changed his clothes and went to Yonghe Palace to see Consort De.

Heyue waited quietly in Honghui's room, sipping tea.

About an hour later, there was a commotion outside. He Yue hurriedly got up to go out and saw that the Fourth Prince, who had rushed back from the palace, was also with Imperial Physician Sun.

When the Fourth Prince saw He Yue, he was surprised for a moment but then regained his composure. He asked Physician Sun to go in and take He Yue's pulse, and then walked aside with He Yue to ask, "What's wrong?"

Seeing his furrowed brows and anxious expression, He Yue felt embarrassed. If it was really as she expected, and Judge Sun had come, that would be fine. But if she made a fuss over nothing, wouldn't she have made a blunder?

"I was just worried about Honghui, so I told my fourth sister-in-law to go to the palace to fetch the best imperial physician." As she spoke, her voice lowered, and she dared not meet his oppressive gaze.

The Fourth Prince frowned even more deeply and sighed softly, "That's not what I meant. I'm asking you what you came back for?"

He Yue exclaimed "Ah!" and widened her eyes in surprise. She smiled awkwardly and said, "I heard about Honghui from Thirteen and I was worried, so I came back to check on him and keep Fourth Sister-in-law company."

"You've shown your kindness." The Fourth Prince rarely showed a gentle expression, but then suddenly remembered something important, and his face became serious: "But has Honghui's condition worsened again? Why did you suddenly send someone to the palace to summon Physician Sun?"

He Yue looked slightly guilty, twisting the hem of her dress with both hands: "Yes, I told Fourth Sister-in-law that I was afraid the previous imperial physician's diagnosis was inaccurate, just to be on the safe side..."

Since the situation was uncertain, Heyue still didn't want to voice her speculation, lest it cause unnecessary panic.

"Nonsense!" Fourth Prince suddenly shouted angrily, interrupting Heyue's words, his face ashen.

Heyue shrank back in fright at his anger, but inwardly she thought, "Why is he shouting so loudly? It's just that he invited a royal physician!"

Seeing her pitiful appearance, the Fourth Prince rubbed his temples, quite helplessly: "It's just a little cold, is it worth making such a fuss and causing people to worry? You're not a child anymore, why are you doing such a foolish thing?"

"Please don't blame her, sir. She was only thinking of Honghui." The Fourth Princess Consort hurriedly entered, greeted the Fourth Prince, and spoke on behalf of Heyue.

The Fourth Prince's anger was not abated: "She is young and ignorant, how could you join in the nonsense? You made such a fuss over a minor illness, what will outsiders think? You even disturbed the Crown Prince and Mother. Even if you are worried, how can you be so unruly?"

Fourth Prince's wife lowered her head in grievance: "I was just too worried about Honghui. Honghui is my only child. This illness came on so suddenly, how could I not be anxious? Honghui is also Your Highness's only legitimate son. How could Your Highness say such a thing?"

The Fourth Prince was speechless. Seeing how heartbroken she was, and thinking of how she had been taking care of Honghui day and night for the past few days and how much she had become haggard, he didn't say anything too harsh and simply sat down on the armchair on the left side of the head seat.

He Yue was puzzled; how did this matter involve the Crown Prince?

"How did Fourth Brother know?" He Yue asked boldly, earning a fierce glare from him.

Heyue wasn't afraid anymore. She sat down to the side with a grin, eagerly waiting for his explanation.

The Fourth Prince had no choice but to explain the whole story.

It turned out that the Fourth Prince's wife's people went to invite Physician Sun, but Physician Sun happened to be at Yuqing Palace treating the Crown Prince's second son, Hongxi.

Sun, the Imperial Physician, was the best pediatrician in the Imperial Hospital. The Fourth Prince's wife had no choice but to go to the Crown Princess herself and wait for Sun to finish examining Hongxi before inviting him over.

The Fourth Prince was discussing matters with the Crown Prince in the Crown Prince's palace when this matter alarmed the Crown Prince and the Fourth Prince. After hearing the details, they assumed that Honghui's condition had worsened again, so the Crown Prince immediately sent Physician Sun to accompany the Fourth Prince back to the palace in a hurry.

He Yue broke out in a cold sweat. This matter had blown up. If the result was that she had made a mountain out of a molehill, how would the Fourth Prince explain himself to the Crown Prince? He would also be branded as unreliable in front of Emperor Kangxi.

So Heyue sat to the side, not daring to speak anymore, and the Fourth Princess held her hand to comfort her.

The wait was long. After the court judge's verdict was announced, both Heyue and the Fourth Prince's wife were on tenterhooks, but the Fourth Prince remained calm as usual.

Upon seeing the solemn expression on Judge Sun's face, the Fourth Prince immediately tensed up as well.

"Judge Sun, how is Honghui?" Fourth Princess Consort held her breath nervously, staring intently at Judge Sun.

Sun Yuanpan glanced at the Fourth Prince's wife, then at the Fourth Prince, and sighed: "I dare not make a definitive statement, but it is highly likely that the First Prince is pregnant. Whether it is or not, the Fourth Prince and his wife should prepare as soon as possible. No one should be allowed to approach the First Prince. A special person should be assigned to serve him. I will come again in a few days to examine the First Prince's pulse. If it is indeed so, I will then examine the First Prince."

Like a bolt from the blue, the Fourth Princess Consort stumbled, only to be caught by her maids Ziyu and Yunying. Her face turned deathly pale in an instant, and tears streamed down her face as she cried out, "No, it can't be...it can't be..."
