The midwife who was locked in the woodshed was almost poisoned to death, but fortunately, Yuxiu's people were prepared and avoided being poisoned.
The midwife, terrified by the incident, confessed that she was acting under the orders of a woman, seemingly a maid, who threatened her entire family's lives. She didn't know who the person threatening her was and dared not disobey.
Yuxiu immediately ordered her men to arrest the two maids who were with Li Jia and show them to the midwife.
Sure enough, she pointed out one of the maids, Qiutong, who was also Li Jia's most trusted maid.
Perhaps not expecting that Yuxiu would arrest people without even asking any questions, Qiutong was terrified. Fang Mama, who was by Yuxiu's side, confessed everything before she even had a chance to interrogate her.
It turned out that Li Jia was worried that Yu Xiu would lose her favor if she gave birth to a son, so she simply took advantage of the chaos during Yu Xiu's childbirth to take action.
Perhaps Yuxiu's good temper in the past made her mistaken, and relying on her usual favor, she became so blatant.
This time, they're completely finished.
"She's just a concubine. Even if she's favored, does she really have the guts to frame the mistress?" Heyue frowned and asked.
It wasn't that she doubted the wickedness of human nature, but after all, a concubine's status was similar to that of a princess. With such limited status and limited ability, how could she possibly threaten the midwife so easily without anyone noticing?
Yuxiu was also taken aback, fell into deep thought, and shook her head after a moment: "Who knows? In any case, her maid confessed. That maid has always been loyal, so how could she so easily confess to her loyal master? She must be guilty."
He Yue said nothing more. Perhaps she was being too sensitive. Li Jia was really going all out to do such crazy things.
"What do you plan to do with her?" Heyue asked.
Before the results came out, Yuxiu still looked solemn, but now she calmed down: "I originally thought it was the work of the two concubines. Just as you said, I also thought that Li Jia had the intention but not the courage. I really didn't know how to deal with the two concubines. Now that it has been found out that it was Li Jia, but she is just a concubine, I am not too worried. As for her child, the master has already agreed to let me raise it."
Suddenly, a well-dressed maid walked in, followed by a little maid who kept her head down and carried a red lacquered and gold-painted tray.
"This servant greets the Princess Consort, and the Thirteenth Princess Consort." The maid and the little maidservant bowed respectfully to He Yue and the other woman. The maid's posture was straight, and her movements were elegant and proper.
Heyue recognized Pinggu, who was serving the Twelfth Prince. She had met her a few times before and knew that Pinggu had served the Twelfth Prince since the palace. Pinggu was quite prestigious and even Yuxiu respected her.
“Aunt, there’s no need for such formalities.” Yuxiu smiled and gestured, seeing the maid behind her bring forward a red lacquered and gold-painted tray with a bowl of brewed medicine and a celadon covered bowl with ice patterns on it.
"Thank you for your trouble, Aunt." Yuxiu nodded slightly, signaling the maid to take the medicine bowl and bring it forward.
Pinggu personally picked up the celadon covered bowl with ice patterns and handed it to Heyue: "Thirteenth Princess Consort, you must be tired from visiting my Princess Consort. Have a bowl of bird's nest porridge."
"Thank you, Aunt Ping." Heyue accepted the gift and thanked her with a smile.
"You're too kind, Thirteenth Princess Consort." Pinggu smiled calmly, showing no sign of being flattered.
Heyue stirred the mixture with a spoon, scooped a spoonful to her lips, and suddenly a thought struck her. She looked up abruptly and exclaimed, "Oh, right, Aunt Ping..."
But he met Pinggu's gaze.
Heyue was taken aback for a moment, and Pinggu asked with a smile, "What is it, Thirteenth Princess Consort?"
"Oh, I was just wondering, have you been the one delivering the medicine to Twelfth Sister-in-law these past few days?" He Yue smiled nonchalantly.
Pinggu nodded: "Yes, Prince Beizi instructed me to serve the Fujin well."
"Twelfth Brother is quite thoughtful, even willing to part with his own personal maid," He Yue teased Yu Xiu.
Yuxiu blushed and glared at her reproachfully: "You're getting more and more unserious."
He Yue chuckled, "What's there to be embarrassed about? Your twelfth brother dotes on you, that's why you look so much better, isn't it?"
“I can’t argue with you.” Yu Xiu shook her head helplessly and didn’t argue with her.
Heyue lowered her head and ate a bite of bird's nest, her mind elsewhere. She exchanged a few words with Yuxiu and then took her leave.
On the way, recalling the glance Pinggu had given me earlier, I couldn't help but feel a little strange.
No matter how you look at it, that look wasn't kind at all, a stark contrast to the peaceful and gentle attitude she had when facing me.
Although she quickly covered it up, the thought of He Yue still sends chills down my spine; there's no way she could be wrong.
He Yue asked herself, apart from meeting Ping Gu a few times when she went to the Twelfth Prince's residence, she had never met Ping Gu before, so what connection could they possibly have?
I felt like something was off, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I rubbed my forehead, feeling a headache coming on, and then stopped thinking about it.
That night, Heyue did not sleep well, had a nightmare, and woke up in the middle of the night.
Thirteen was woken up by the noise. Still half asleep, he hugged her, patted her back, and softly comforted her, "What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
He Yue's heart remained restless for a long time. The scene from her dream vividly appeared before her eyes, making her extremely uneasy. She subconsciously touched her abdomen and felt that the child was still there, and her heart suddenly calmed down.
The look in his eyes from earlier that day flashed through my mind again, and that's when I realized something was wrong.
Pinggu's gaze wasn't directed at herself, but at the bird's nest.
Besides being cold, there was a hint of triumphant satisfaction in his eyes, as if he had achieved something.
He Yue's body suddenly felt as if it had fallen into an ice cave.
She wasn't sure if her guess was correct, but her past life experiences made her exceptionally sensitive to danger, and she had never made a mistake.
Because she was pregnant, she dared not take any chances and had to be sure no matter what.
