Chapter 56
Chapter 56
Memory flashback.
Because she was on night shift, Shen Qingyuan didn't arrive at the hospital until almost noon the next day.
She entered through the small north gate next to the emergency building, still feeling a bit dazed. As luck would have it, an ambulance rushed in through the north gate and came to a stop in front of the emergency building.
Medical staff carrying a stretcher and accompanying family members got out of the vehicle.
As Shen Qingyuan approached, she caught a glimpse of the patient's family member's profile out of the corner of her eye, and a strange sense of familiarity washed over her. She instinctively turned her head.
The family member who got out of the ambulance was a middle-aged man who had brought his mother to the hospital the night before.
The woman on the stretcher was the old lady who had fallen and injured her arm the night before and was now unconscious.
She convinced herself it was just a coincidence. Last night, the old lady was in good spirits, except for the dislocated shoulder. With age comes unpredictable events.
Thinking this way, I was restless all afternoon and was scolded by my mentor.
Finally, unable to resist, I took a break and asked a colleague I knew in the emergency room about the patient's condition.
Shen Qingyuan remembered the name on the medical record: Wang Suzhen. Finding out the name wouldn't be difficult.
"It was tSAH. He was transferred to neurosurgery this afternoon. I just asked, and it's hopeless."
tSAH, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, is an emergency caused by traumatic brain injury leading to blood entering the subarachnoid space.
Shen Qingyuan was shocked. "How could this be? When did the brain injury occur?"
“Last night, I think. We came too late. If we had come earlier, we might have been able to save him. But you never know, you know, this disease is difficult to diagnose, sometimes there's nothing to show on imaging…”
Her colleague's words faded into the distance, echoing in Shen Qingyuan's mind like a hollow valley, the sound waves circling and gradually disappearing.
-
So, this is what she meant when she said that a patient had died because of her.
“I tried hard to recall, and that night, the patient did seem to be confused, but the family claimed it was Alzheimer’s disease,” Shen Qingyuan continued. “I clearly remember asking the family if there were any other injuries. The answer was no.”
Ye Chuyang said, "You can't take the blame for this tragedy. This matter should end here."
Shen Qingyuan sighed softly, "Is this the end? You underestimated the obsession of a filial son."
For the next six months, Shen Qingyuan felt like she was living in hell.
The filial son brazenly went to the clinic to protest and hurl insults, clashed with hospital security guards, displayed banners accusing Shen Qingyuan on her way to work, and distributed "report letter" flyers at the hospital entrance. He even followed her to her residence and harassed her...
The lawsuit is ongoing, the complaint letter is being written, and the actions to defame her and the hospital continue day after day, relentlessly.
The pain of losing his mother transformed into the unyielding fighting spirit of the filial son.
His logic was simple and straightforward: I brought my mother to see a doctor, and she passed away the next day. This means you, little brat, delayed treatment and caused a death. A life is at stake, and you're just sitting here like nothing happened?
Even now, Shen Qingyuan can't quite recall this memory clearly. Even the face of the filial son is somewhat blurry. Perhaps this is the brain's self-preservation mechanism—because it's too painful, it tries to forget quickly.
She didn't want to recall every detail; she just wanted to give a concise summary. Those who could understand would understand.
Ye Chuyang was so surprised that she couldn't speak.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, he frowned and said angrily, "Call the police! Shouldn't the police deal with this unreasonable scoundrel?"
“At most, it’ll be criticism and education. If it gets too serious, they’ll detain you for a few days. They’ll be released and then keep trying,” Shen Qingyuan said calmly. “Besides, rumors spread like wildfire. If someone persists relentlessly, people around them will gradually start to think: he must have some merit. Moreover, by advocating for his mother, his reputation as a filial son will grow stronger. Everyone likes a filial son.”
The other resident trainees who entered the hospital at the same time gradually stopped associating with Shen Qingyuan, fearing that trouble would get involved. Although the hospital reviewed Shen Qingyuan's treatment that night and found nothing irregular or against regulations or treatment standards.
She remained in the hospital, but her situation was awkward.
For a while, Sun Zhi gave her a lot of comfort and support, but later... never mind, let's not talk about it anymore.
During that period, depression, anxiety, and insomnia came one after another, affecting Shen Qingyuan's work as well, but she persevered. In one operation, she accidentally severed a patient's major blood vessel, but fortunately, the surgeon provided emergency treatment, preventing a major disaster.
The tension had finally reached its breaking point, and even Shen Qingyuan began to wonder if she was unsuitable to be a doctor. There must be some major flaw in her; otherwise, she wouldn't have encountered such bad luck after only two years in the workforce.
She quit her job, broke up with Sun Zhi, and returned to Chenyang dejectedly.
"Look, even the most favored sons of heaven can fall from grace in just half a year."
Ye Chuyang looked at her quietly, his gaze filled with deep compassion and heartache. He hadn't expected her to go through all this. The pride of heaven, Shen Qingyuan, shouldn't be dragged into this mire.
When he was unknown, he also heard a lot of contemptuous words, but it was different, to a different degree. The slander and doubt she suffered were devastating. Especially for Shen Qingyuan, who was proud and arrogant and had had a smooth life from childhood.
He felt a strong urge to hold her in his arms. He opened his arms and, without saying a word, embraced her.
Tightly, firmly.
-
The sudden hug startled Shen Qingyuan.
"It's alright, we've made it through, haven't we?" She comforted him instead, patting Ye Chuyang on the back.
Shen Qingyuan grinned, as if it were none of her business, and said on his shoulder, "Of course, I'm one of the unlucky ones. Not all the chosen ones fall from grace. You certainly won't."
“You probably don’t understand our circle.” After a long silence, Ye Chuyang said slowly, “To fall from grace, one night is enough.”
It's rare that he still retains his sense of humor even at this time.
Shen Qingyuan smiled and wriggled slightly in his arms. What's wrong with her today? All this hugging and cuddling. Of course, she started it. It almost looks like she's taking advantage of a top male celebrity.
Having someone share your emotions is completely different from drinking them alone; it's like having a companion on a difficult journey. It's true that you get tired of enduring things alone for too long.
“Thank you for listening to me. My dear friend,” she said.
The friendship of youth, rekindled over the years, has blossomed again. Reunited, spending every day together, supporting each other. We're good friends now, aren't we?
Also, my good friend has really well-developed pectoral muscles. They look warm and powerful.
He sighed softly, as if helpless, "Shen Qingyuan, what am I supposed to do with you?"
"Then I hope you get better soon, so that I, as a former orthopedic surgeon, can feel more accomplished," she said.
She used the word "before," not mentioning the future. It's highly likely she won't be in this line of work anymore in the future.
"Get well soon, you too," he said. "Okay?" He was referring to Shen Qingyuan, who had lost her strength, courage, and dreams, and how she could overcome all of that and rediscover herself.
"Don't worry, I will. If all else fails, I'll just find a man to marry." She remembered the jokes her fellow female resident doctors made. That's fine too; life can go on no matter what. And if she really wanted to get married, she wouldn't be unable to find one, would she?
He released his arm, his eyes fixed on her, unblinking.
"Well, why don't you consider marrying me?" After saying that, he realized it was a bit abrupt and tried to smooth things over, "I mean, if you really can't get married."
"How come I'm the one drinking, but you're the one who's drunk? How could I possibly not be able to get married?" Shen Qingyuan shook her head, revealing her white teeth, and smiled.
His focus was on "marrying me"; her focus was on "not being able to get married".
Alcohol makes you relax, as if nothing is really important. But it wasn't.
It was said out of the blue, skipping some necessary steps, and directly "proposing" does sound like a joke.
Ye Chuyang also laughed, feeling a little embarrassed. He stood up, turned his back to Shen Qingyuan, and paced back and forth, thinking about what else to say.
Now that we've gotten to this point, and the atmosphere's quite lively, it seems like a man needs to show some drive in a moment like this.
Having mentally prepared himself, Ye Chuyang carefully said, "Of course, I know being with me is quite stressful, after all, your old classmate is very popular. But you can consider it... Actually, I do have feelings for you, more than just feelings. Shen Qingyuan, I... I like you..."
He turned to look at her, his whole body tense, his hands clenched into fists, his palms sweating, he was nervous. The arrow was released, the bow still taut.
Just like that night when I "followed" Shen Qingyuan home. I was taking it too seriously, yet I had no confidence in the answers; I hadn't been this nervous even the night before a major exam.
His tense expression gradually relaxed, and the corners of his lips turned up—
Shen Qingyuan was lying sideways on the sofa, her mouth slightly open, her eyes closed, fast asleep. The wine glass had rolled onto the carpet in front of the sofa; it was empty.
I was so tired that my mind went from being tense to relaxed, and with the added effect of alcohol, I fell asleep without warning.
He shook his head helplessly, unsure if his confession had reached her ears.
Oh well, there's plenty of time in the future.
-
The next morning, Shen Qingyuan woke up groggily on the sofa. The blanket covering her slipped to the floor.
Her last memory seemed to be that she said she could just get married, and Ye Chuyang said she would marry him.
Everyone was laughing and joking, the atmosphere was quite pleasant, of course it was all a joke. It was probably a joke.
There's one more thing.
She opened her phone and checked the new messages.
I finally breathed a sigh of relief. Xiao Chao said that the uncle who collapsed in the underground parking lot last night had undergone surgery and it was quite successful.
Xiao Chao also said that the family was extremely grateful to him and wanted to personally visit them to express their thanks.
"Sister Shen saved the person, and Brother Yang paid for it. I just did my part, and I feel so unworthy of it..."
However, given Ye Chuyang's special status, it would be quite troublesome if he accepted these thanks and the news got out, so he simply let Xiao Chao take the blame.
Ye Chuyang replied to him: Brother Chao, you've worked hard. I'm giving you a day off today. Get some sleep before you go to the set.
The time is 8:00 AM.
As for him, he had already gotten up early to catch up on work and was waiting on set.
Shen Qingyuan was a little confused. She looked around and found herself in Ye Chuyang's suite.
She's in Ye Chuyang's room!
Oh no, please don't drag me into your entertainment industry stuff!
The thought of paparazzi and fanatical fans staking out the area all night, and sometimes even sasaeng fans trying to sneak in and take photos, sent chills down Shen Qingyuan's spine.
The phone on the coffee table suddenly buzzed and vibrated. Shen Qingyuan subconsciously looked at it, and the name that popped up on the screen startled her.
This person is like a tapeworm in her stomach.
After a moment, she slid the answer button.
"Awake?" The slightly hoarse voice carried a lazy, magnetic quality.
Shen Qingyuan's mind raced as she carefully considered her words.
"That, yesterday..."
"Um?"
"I'm sorry, I might be drunk, I fell asleep on your sofa."
"Hmm." On the other end of the phone, Ye Chuyang smiled faintly. "Did you sleep well, Dr. Chen?"
"It's alright, it's alright." She said guiltily, "Then what happened last night..."
"I booked another room. Don't worry."
Male celebrities still uphold traditional male virtues. First there was the "moonlight script," then the "teaching lines" incident; their excuses when they run out of words seem absurd.
If you were secretly filmed spending the night in a room with a female doctor, you'd never be able to explain yourself. You have to be careful.
Shen Qingyuan chuckled, relieved. "I'm so sorry, you didn't even wake me up, and it cost me so much money."
"No need to spend money, no need to spend money. The most important thing is that Dr. Shen gets plenty of rest." Ye Chuyang smiled, unsure how much she still remembered from last night's words. So her smile was particularly exaggerated.
After hanging up, Shen Qingyuan felt her face was almost frozen from smiling. She thought about it and quickly went back to her room to wash up and change her clothes.
Xiao Chao wasn't on set, and neither was she. It wasn't fair for the boss to be out there making a living all by himself. He should just go and provide the service.
As it turned out, the incident was caught on camera and posted on social media within a few days. Once it appeared on social media, it wasn't far from becoming a trending topic.
Ye Chuyang called the company and asked them to suppress the trending topic.
"It's not a bad thing. Brother Liao put in money and effort to save someone. This is a great thing. The company also saved on publicity and public relations costs. Everyone is happy."
Yang Yu, the company's publicity director, couldn't quite understand. Calling Ye Chuyang "brother" wasn't about age, but rather based on his position in the company; even the big boss affectionately called Ye Chuyang "Brother Liao."
