Chapter 54 I will not apologize to you...
She hugged Huang Bei tightly, and Huang Bei pressed herself against her, her face still showing a hint of confusion.
"Are you alright? Is there anything bothering you?"
Her head, slurred by alcohol, spun slower than usual. Huang Bei stared intently at the eyes she had cursed a thousand times in secret, eyes that were now fixed on her face.
What are you looking at? Go away!
She shook her head vigorously, trying to shake off the inexplicably appearing Sheng Yi, until she was completely dizzy, but Sheng Yi was still standing there blankly in front of her.
Damn it, she really drank too much. She muttered to herself.
Sheng Yi carefully scanned her expression, and seeing that she was alright, was about to step back when she heard a cry of "Ouch!" from someone nearby.
She turned around at the sound and saw the man who had been so arrogant just moments before stumbling and crawling away.
Further up, I met a pair of deep, unfathomable eyes.
No, at this moment, his eyes were clearly filled with impatience and disgust, and he exuded an aura that kept strangers at bay.
Why is Wen Shili here? Sheng Yi couldn't help but wonder.
But somehow, she had a gut feeling that now wasn't the right time to ask that question, so she changed her tone and asked him in a low voice, "Where's Yan Shen?"
Yan Shen rushed over and heard this sentence. He asked himself if he had treated Sheng Yi fairly well in the past, so why did she insist on ruining him here today?
He stopped in his tracks and stood aside. When he met Sheng Yi's questioning gaze, he could only offer an apologetic smile.
Sheng Yi raised an eyebrow: What's going on?
Yan Shen kept glancing at the sky and then at the ground, avoiding Sheng Yi's gaze. Sheng Yi, having wasted so much time on her expression, finally gave up trying to communicate with him further.
The bar owner, who followed later, stepped forward with a smile to smooth things over, saying, "I'm sorry to have startled everyone."
If we're talking about being startled, it seems like Amy was the only one truly frightened in the entire room. Her Barbie-doll-like face was filled with worry, and Huang Bei leaned against her, completely out of sorts.
After confirming that the person was alright, Sheng Yi didn't intend to talk to them any further. She only instructed Amy to take the person back safely and, if necessary, to take them to the hospital for a check-up.
It was just a casual reminder, just in case, but no sooner had she finished speaking than Huang Bei clutched her stomach and half-squatted down, her forehead instantly covered in fine beads of sweat.
Amy's face turned several shades paler in an instant. Supporting Huang Bei, she wanted to ask something, but after glancing at the people beside her, she didn't utter a sound. Tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment.
Huang Bei wanted to say a few words to comfort her, but her stomach suddenly cramped again.
Realizing something, she looked up in alarm, enduring the pain, and tried to reach Sheng Yi's hand.
At that moment, she suddenly began to regret it, wondering if God had secretly overheard her careless words.
Sheng Yi was in pain from being pinched, but Huang Bei seemed unaware of how much force she was using. She only knew to hold onto the person's hand tightly, as if clinging to the only piece of driftwood.
"Shengyi, help me." Her lips were pale as she insisted on continuing, "Help me... save the baby."
This child, whom she had never cared about, this child who was always quiet and afraid of attracting her attention, only realized at this moment when she sensed that she was about to lose him that he was all she had.
Her eyes were fixed on Sheng Yi, who could feel the pleading in them. Her usually haughty, high-pitched voice seemed to be enveloped in a heavy mist. Sheng Yi mustered all her strength to keep her hands from trembling.
Huang Bei's voice grew even lower, but the strength in her hands didn't lessen at all, "Also, could you help me... help me... contact Feng... Feng..."
She couldn't continue speaking at this point. Sheng Yi stared into her eyes and nodded, "Yes, don't worry, I will help you contact Feng Shu."
Wen Shili stood silently not far away, the anger that had just been surging within him seemingly having been replaced by a deep, still calm in an instant.
Sheng Yi shifted her gaze to what was behind him. Yan Shen understood and turned to walk out. The bar owner also rushed forward to help.
The group was in a hurry, and Sheng Yi was about to follow when someone grabbed her hand from the side, saying, "I'll take you there."
Wen Shili's gaze was deep, and she was momentarily stunned, but quickly nodded, "Thank you for your trouble."
The car window clearly separated the inside from the outside. Sheng Yi watched the streetlights receding into the distance and listened to the ringing of the phone in the receiver.
She didn't have to wait long; the call connected quickly. Ignoring the surprised greetings on the other end, she briefly explained Huang Bei's situation. Feng Shu seemed completely unprepared for this turn of events, pausing for a moment before telling her, "I'll be there right away."
The screen lit up for a few seconds, then automatically turned off and locked. Sheng Yi sat quietly in the darkness, gazing absently at the deep night view.
Even though she was just an observer, and even though the coming and going of life was not in her control, perhaps because Huang Bei's gaze was too stubborn and piercing, her whole heart was still inevitably moved by her.
"It will be alright."
The car interior was dark, with only the streetlights outside illuminating the unknown future. Wen Shili's voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable authority, subtly offering reassurance in the chaotic night.
Her jumbled thoughts slowly settled, and Sheng Yi let out a heavy breath, as if trying to carry away the pent-up emotions with the movement. She nodded, telling herself, "Yes, she will."
Thanks to timely medical attention, both Huang Bei and her unborn child were unharmed.
After regaining consciousness, she was a little uneasy, and kept asking Amy, "Do you think he heard me? Is he angry with me?"
Amy shook her head, crying, but then felt that now was not the time to cry. She forced a smile, pouting, "How could he bear to blame you? You've always wanted to have your own baby and your own home, and he can definitely feel that."
As she spoke, she cited some minor pieces of evidence to comfort her and tell her not to take her momentary angry words to heart.
When Feng Shu arrived, Huang Bei had already been coaxed to sleep.
There was no joy on his face as a new father, and he didn't express much knowing that Huang Bei was alright.
Sheng Yi had no idea what had happened between them. Even though it was their first meeting, Huang Bei was completely smitten with him.
She had no intention of judging other people's stories, and simply sat quietly with him for a while. After a long while, Feng Shu suddenly said in a low voice, "The child is not mine."
Sheng Yi nodded to indicate that she understood, since Huang Bei's prenatal checkup had been long after their breakup. She wanted to offer comfort, but didn't know how to begin.
Feng Shu kept his head down and didn't see her movements clearly. He hesitated for a long time with his head down, then suddenly raised his eyes and looked at Sheng Yi, his eyes full of an expression she couldn't understand.
Sheng Yi instinctively tried to dodge, but Feng Shu suddenly grabbed her sleeve. He stared into her eyes and said in a daze, "Do you believe me? Nothing happened between me and her."
The implication in her words was obvious, and Sheng Yi was unsure whether she had managed to hide the astonishment on her face.
Although gossip spreads like wildfire among classmates during school days, the news of who secretly held hands with whom could be heard throughout the classroom in no time. Just like that love letter she handed out back then, even after so many years, it can still be dug up and placed on someone's desk.
But putting aside the fact that she's long past that age of curiosity, this is the first time in her life that the person involved has come face-to-face to clarify an old news story that everyone has already accepted.
She was completely unable to respond.
After saying this, Feng Shu also fell into an eerie silence.
When Wen Shili arrived, he saw them sitting quietly on the bench in front of the ward, one on each side. Sheng Yi heard the voice, turned around with a happy expression, and when she saw it was him, she stood up and went to greet him, asking, "You haven't left yet?"
Having sat awkwardly with Feng Shu for so long, she now sees everyone as handsome and charming, completely unaware that her voice is full of coquettishness.
Soothed by the gentle voice, Wen Shili asked her, "How much longer do you want to stay?"
Sheng Yi actually wanted to leave immediately, but after glancing at the time, she was reluctant to leave Huang Bei and Amy alone there. Amy was a delicate young woman, and Huang Bei had always been her protector. This night must have been too chaotic for her.
Huang Bei had just woken up and noticed Amy peeking in from outside the door. She waved for her to come over. Seeing this, Amy got up to make room for them to talk.
Feng Shu had no intention of seeing Huang Bei, and Sheng Yi did not insist. Before entering, she only glanced in the direction of Wen Shili.
Feng Shu suppressed the bitterness in her heart and followed the rise and fall of her gaze. She saw Wen Shili nod slightly at her, as if they had been gazing at each other quietly for a long time.
Therefore, they are together.
So, he was late.
He supported his forehead with both hands, as if he was about to give up.
Sheng Yi closed the door, and Huang Bei, half-lying on the bed, asked, "Is Feng Shu outside?"
Seeing her speechless expression, she laughed self-deprecatingly, "I guessed."
The image of a young, upright man was ultimately just an exaggerated depiction by a young girl. Once the veil of illusion is torn away, what is revealed is nothing more than a selfish and cowardly shell.
Gone was her arrogant expression; the haughty air she had always maintained vanished, replaced by a gentle and serene demeanor.
"You know what? I've always envied you." Huang Bei said softly. "Maybe it's karma. I was always trying to outdo others, but in the end I realized that some things are useless no matter how hard you try."
She had kept these words to herself for so long that she didn't even know who to tell. "I knew he definitely didn't want to see me, but I still asked you to help me call him here."
Actually, I just wanted to give up on him.
She never imagined that one day, Sheng Yi would become the only listener to her love story.
If that counts as love.
“I used to be completely devoted to him, always being careful and afraid that I wasn’t good enough for him. But that will never happen again.”
She paused, gave a hollow laugh, and said faintly, "Anyway, I'm already tainted, and he won't want me anymore."
Sheng Yi didn't interrupt her, listening as she talked about happiness, then despair, and how she slowly went from despair to self-destruction.
The girl, once full of hope, lay quietly in her hospital bed, each word seemingly aimed at reducing herself to dust. Finally, she couldn't help but speak, asking, "And what about you?"
Huang Bei looked up in a daze and saw those clear eyes staring at her without any hesitation. "And you, do you still want yourself?"
Upon entering, Sheng Yi removed her mask. Her beautiful face was now free of makeup, making her look delicate and fragile, but her eyes were filled with self-confidence and perseverance.
"You live for yourself, and as long as you're true to yourself, you don't need others' judgment." The gentle tone was like a sharp dagger, each word etching new rules into her heart.
She was a girl completely different from her.
Huang Bei's eyes flickered as she listened to her continue, "A temporary setback is not the end of the competition."
Her gaze fell on her lower abdomen, and her voice became even softer, "Just consider it a gift from God to you, okay?"
She didn't specify who he was, but Huang Bei knew perfectly well.
A gift? She clearly hated him so much.
She turned her head to the side, and the tears she had been holding back for so long finally streamed down her cheeks, fell into her hair, and quickly disappeared.
"You can leave now." She suppressed a sob that was about to escape her lips and hurriedly shooed the guest away. "I won't apologize to you."
After all, she genuinely hated her back then. Why bother pretending to ask for forgiveness?
She knew this was futile misplaced anger, but even now, she was unwilling to admit that for so many years, she had truly had nothing.
The ward door closed quietly, without even a sound. Huang Bei craned her neck to look outside, until her eyes stung, but she received no further hope.
She knew that this was the final chapter of her story with Feng Shu.
