Chapter 42: Guest Appearance as Girlfriend.
He looked at her and calmly declared.
The delicate flower branch trembled in his hand, and he even held his breath a few beats tight.
"What do I care about yours or mine?" Sheng Yi smiled and said, "It's only a few dollars for a bunch."
She nodded. "Of course."
As Wen Shili got into the car, he could still see her peeking out the window. The popcorn she hadn't finished eating was on the seat; she'd forgotten to take it with her.
Even with the car window closed, the "sizzling" sound still seemed to linger in my ears.
All the female celebrities I've worked with before are dedicated and have maintaining their figures ingrained in their DNA. Even Xiao You has been talking about losing weight since puberty.
Yet, she eats what she wants and laughs when she wants, managing to support herself quite well within this circle. It's hard to describe the feeling, but he seems to be slowly getting used to it.
A car flashed its lights in a parking space not far away and drove off. Wen Shili followed behind, drove onto the road, and at the next intersection, the two cars drove in different directions.
It's him again.
Wen Shili chuckled lightly, picked up a popcorn kernel, and the sweetness spread in his mouth—just right.
When Sheng Yi arrived home, Fu Xiaodan was already asleep. A light was left on in the living room for her. She found a vase, put some flowers in it, rested for a while, and then took the clothes to the bathroom.
It was past midnight when I finished drying my hair.
The phone screen lit up with a message from Wen Shili saying he had arrived home. Sheng Yi replied, "Get some rest."
Wen Shili: "Yes, you too."
When I opened my eyes this morning, I habitually checked my phone, and there was another red notification on WeChat.
Sheng Yi clicked on the link, only to find it was Feng Shu. It was past 1 a.m., and he asked her out of the blue if she had been busy lately.
She was already asleep by then, so why did this person suddenly want to chat with her in the middle of the night? Sheng Yi asked him directly, "Is there something you need?"
The message had barely been sent when a notification appeared at the top of the screen indicating that the other party was typing.
Judging from the response speed, Sheng Yi thought something serious had happened, but after waiting for several minutes, there was still no follow-up.
Instead, Wen Shili sent another message, asking her what she was doing today.
Although I promised to treat him to dinner yesterday, I'm really worried she'll skip out on the bill this early. Sheng Yi shook her head and chuckled; the restaurant probably isn't even open yet.
She considered it for a moment and replied, "Can I contact you later? I already have plans for the day."
Wen Shili didn't say anything more, simply replying with an "Oh".
Unable to guess the attitude behind that tone, Sheng Yi replied with a cute emoji.
Feng Shu's message arrived late, simply stating, "I'm fine."
Sheng Yi didn't delve any further; he would naturally tell her if there was anything to discuss.
She put down her phone, tidied herself up a bit, had a quick breakfast, and then went straight to the mall with Fu Xiaodan.
Some people go shopping simply to enjoy the experience of browsing and eating, and may not buy anything they really need by the end of the day. But Fu Xiaodan is different; she treats every shopping trip like a KPI to meet, and she has to buy everything before going home.
Fortunately, she had a clear goal. In one morning, she decided on several sets of autumn clothes. She also bought two sets of discounted summer clothes and bought some new clothes for her boyfriend, Liang Hui.
Sheng Yi went out with her mainly for companionship, and after Fu Xiaodan's repeated encouragement, he also picked out a set for himself.
Actually, her wardrobe is almost overflowing, and she doesn't care much about keeping up with trends; her current wardrobe is more than enough for her to enjoy.
The restaurant they went to was the same one Sheng Yi had planned to go to the night before. After eating, the two of them strolled around the neighborhood. At four o'clock, Fu Xiaodan went to Liang Hui's place, and Sheng Yi sent Yan Shen her location, asking him to come pick her up.
At Xingchen Entertainment, Cao Jun checked the time; Li Ge had been in the recording studio all day. Seeing him take off his headphones, he quickly pushed open the door and went in.
Wen Shili turned around. "Any news?"
Cao Jun shook his head, took out his phone and handed it to him, "Not yet."
"Okay, you go home first, I'll stay a little longer."
Upon hearing this, alarm bells rang in Cao Jun's mind.
Yesterday, when I came back from the airport, Brother Li refused to give me a ride. When I got to his house today, I found out that he had gone somewhere yesterday and bought a bunch of junk food. Of course, this was just my guess based on the packaging bags in the trash can.
Look at him now, they're just trying to get rid of him again.
If things continue like this, is he going to be kicked out?
No, he doesn't want to give up this job just yet.
He immediately replied, "No need, no need. There's nothing to do at home anyway. I prefer working."
As he spoke, he became quite animated. Wen Shili, unaware of his dedication to his work, replied casually, "Is that so?"
Cao Jun nodded vigorously: "Of course!"
Little did he know that the very culprit who had been causing him such anxiety was also feeling extremely uneasy.
Under the scrutinizing gaze of the man opposite her, Sheng Yi secretly reached out and pinched the person next to her.
Yan Shen's lips twitched. "Dad, don't be so serious."
Sheng Yi hadn't expected that Yan Shen's offer of help meant asking her to help deal with his parents.
It's said that she was pressured to get married and, since she happened to be an actress, they simply pulled her in for a cameo role.
Sheng Yi suspected that he might not know what others thought of her acting skills, otherwise he wouldn't have been so desperate as to turn to her for help.
Yan Shen had barely begun when she repeatedly said she was not up to the task. Unexpectedly, Yan Shen had come prepared and directly stated his conditions.
With two endorsements and a spot on a popular variety show, she calculated that it wasn't a bad deal.
But once I got there, I realized that this money wasn't so easy to earn.
She already knew that Yan Shen came from a well-off family, but facing him in person and facing his father were completely different feelings.
Fortunately, after Yan Shen said that, the person opposite him stopped having a stern expression and instantly switched to a friendly look. It was just that the change was so fast that Sheng Yi found it a little hard to adapt.
"Xiao Sheng, right? How long have you known each other?"
She was fine with his cold demeanor, but when he got warm and friendly, she felt a little guilty. She greeted him politely, "Hello, Uncle."
Strictly speaking, it's only been a little over two months since we first met at the Chunying Charity Gala. Meeting the parents in such a short time seems a bit impulsive and hasty.
She followed the script Yan Shen had given her, "It's been almost half a year."
The group finished their meal with their own hidden agendas. During the meal, the strict father asked her some questions. Fortunately, they were mostly basic information, such as how many people were in her family and how long she had been in S City.
Sheng Yi answered what she could, and for what she couldn't, she resorted to bluffing. Yan Shen, the peacemaker, also rambled on and on, making the scene more harmonious than she had imagined.
After the meal, Yan Shen drove her home, saying, "Thank you for your trouble."
Sheng Yi had accepted the favor, so of course she wasn't that precious. "Your dad is quite easy to get along with."
This was the first time Yan Shen had heard someone describe his father like that, but Old Yan had indeed surprised him a bit today.
"But to be honest, when he first had that stern face, I was really afraid he'd throw money at me. I should have discussed it with you beforehand: if he really did hit me, would I accept the money as payment for my services, or would I have to pay you back later?"
Yan Shen looked at her expression with a hint of regret, "You've already recounted everything?"
Sheng Yi thought about it and realized that this business didn't seem so difficult. "If you need anything next time, you can come to me. If we make money, we'll split it 50/50."
When Sheng Yi got out of the car, she still had a smile on her lips.
Yan Shen is a strange person. She has seen him as an elite in a suit and tie, but when she is with him, she always forgets this side of him and unconsciously treats him as a close friend.
Perhaps it was the filter applied to him during our first meeting, or perhaps he just acted too casually in his daily life.
It's unexpected that someone like this could be troubled by their own family. Sheng Yi suddenly missed Yu Ying; she must be thinking of her at home too.
No matter how far apart they are, family is always each other's support and backing, and she is very lucky.
Wen Shili sat in the car, watching the person who said they would contact him later get out of the other car with a smile. Then, as if thinking of something, a gentle and sweet expression appeared on his face.
I'm so happy, but this happiness is blindingly bright.
He closed his eyes briefly, then opened them again, watching her approach step by step.
After him...
It stopped again.
It wasn't until Sheng Yi saw the familiar car downstairs that she remembered what she had forgotten.
She knocked on the car window, but there was no response. She knocked again, and Wen Shili opened the door for her.
Without him saying anything, she got into the car on her own, fastened her seatbelt, and asked him, "When did you get here? Why didn't you tell me?"
Wen Shili twitched the corner of his mouth. "I sent you a message."
Sheng Yi took out her phone and saw that there was indeed an unread message: "Sorry, I've been out all day and haven't had time to check my phone."
one day.
Wen Shili tapped the steering wheel. "Oh, I see." He smiled. "I hope I didn't disturb your date."
His voice was very soft, but Sheng Yi felt a tightness in her heart upon hearing it.
He saw it.
She secretly glanced at his expression using the light from the window.
Wen Shili smiled slightly, casually tapping his fingertips on the steering wheel, as if it were just a casual question and he didn't care about her answer.
Sheng Yi relaxed. In essence, it was work, but he knew Yan Shen and didn't know if he would have any dealings with Yan Shen's father.
She didn't explain further and immediately changed the subject, "What would you like to eat? I'm a little hungry too."
It was supposed to be dinner, but it was just a meal with the boss that the employee was on a mission. She was on edge throughout the meal, and in order to appear weak and dependent, she didn't really enjoy the food.
Her expression didn't seem fake; at least Wen Shili couldn't detect any flaws in it, and he was too lazy to investigate further whether she was acting or if what she said was true.
What are the options?
Sheng Yi was initially worried that he might be in a bad mood, but she didn't expect him to be so easy to talk to. He immediately named several restaurants, all of which offered good privacy. The online reviews were positive, and the prices were within her budget.
Finally, she went to the one closest to her house.
Once inside the private room and after ordering the food, Sheng Yi dared to take off her mask.
Wen Shili had no particular preferences, so he left the task of ordering food entirely to her. Sheng Yi ordered several dishes based on online recommendations, and after tasting them one by one, thankfully none of them were bad.
Later, when I make plans to have dinner with friends, this place can also be added to my shortlist, Sheng Yi thought with satisfaction as she ate.
Wen Shili sat opposite her, watching her pout, and couldn't help but wonder, is Yan Shen going bankrupt recently? He doesn't even know to feed people when he takes them out.
"Let's add two more dishes, see what else you'd like to eat."
Sheng Yi looked blankly at him. "Huh?"
Realizing what she had done, she quickly refused, "No, no, no, I'm full, really."
Wen Shili looked at her with that questioning expression again, which made Sheng Yi anxious. She gestured frantically, staring intently at him with an expression that was as sincere as could be.
If it weren't inconvenient, she really wanted him to touch her belly directly; she'd already gained weight from eating so much.
She just didn't want to waste food; what did her stomach do wrong?
Wen Shili couldn't help but smile. Sheng Yi felt something brush against her heart, fleeting and elusive, leaving her no time to grasp it.
