Chapter 9 Making Dumplings
After the family had a lively dinner, they washed up and went back to bed.
No words were spoken that night.
The next morning, Mi Xia took the little girl to get up, wash and have breakfast. Today they got up late and their elder brother had already gone to work. After eating, Zhang Hongxia kneaded the dough while she prepared the filling.
One was filled with wild vegetables and pork, the other with mushrooms, black fungus, and eggs. She secretly added oyster sauce to them. After making these preparations, Mi Xia and Zhang Hongxia started making dumplings and buns.
Mi Xiaohuan saw the dough on the table and smiled, "Auntie, I want to help you make dumplings."
Mo Zhixia also opened her eyes wide and looked at the dough on the table.
"Then take Xia Xia to take a shower, and then come over to help." Mi Xia looked at the two little girls. There was a little more smile on his face.
When the two little girls came over, they rolled up their sleeves neatly and said, "Aunt, my sister and I are done washing."
After Mi Xiaohuan finished speaking, she looked eager to try, and Mo Zhixia also followed behind her sister happily.
"Xiaohuan, come here. Auntie will teach you how to make dumplings." Mi Xia originally wanted to tease Mi Xiaohuan, but she didn't expect the little girl to learn it seriously.
When the little girl saw that Mi Xia ignored her, she looked angry and pointed at the dough on the table and hummed, which made Mi Xia and Zhang Hongxia burst out laughing. The little girl was really funny.
Zhang Hongxia smiled and pinched a small piece of dough and handed it to Mo Zhixia. The little girl was having a lot of fun.
Mi Xiaohuan was very serious about making dumplings, but she failed to make the first one because she couldn't seal the edges after putting the filling in. Mi Xia carefully taught her how to seal the edges, and when she made the third one, she succeeded. Mi Xiaohuan was very happy.
When Mo Zhixia saw Mi Xiaohuan laughing, she also laughed foolishly.
After working for more than an hour, the dumplings were finally wrapped, and Zhang Hongxia’s buns were also about to be completed.
Because Mi Xia didn’t know how to make buns, she took a while to learn from Zhang Hongxia after making dumplings.
After the two of them had packed up, Mi Xia began to cook dumplings and steam buns.
In the kitchen, looking at those plump white dumplings floating up and down in the boiling water in the pot, Mi Xia felt a sense of accomplishment, most of which were made by her.
Soon after putting the dumplings in the pot, she could smell the aroma of the dumplings, which aroused Mi Xia's appetite. She loved eating dumplings when she was young.
After adding water several times, the dumplings were almost cooked. Zhang Hongxia then served the dumplings and put them on the table to cool. The dumplings were still very hot when they came out of the pot.
As soon as her eldest brother and nephews came home, Mi Xiaohuan ran over happily, "Dad, brother, mom and aunt made a lot of dumplings and buns."
When the naughty boys heard this, they jumped up with joy. After eating two yesterday, they had been thinking about it all the time. Mi Qiu couldn't help swallowing his saliva.
After washing, the boys couldn't wait to sit at the table, looked at the dumplings on the table, and jumped for joy. "Wow, there are really dumplings to eat. We can't eat so many dumplings even during Chinese New Year." Mi Weiguo said happily.
Mi Xia was very sad. This year, it was difficult for people at the bottom of society to have enough to eat every meal, let alone so many dumplings.
"I'm not afraid of you laughing at me, but our family hasn't eaten dumplings for several years." Mi Qiu said with a sob.
"Thanks to you today, our whole family can eat pork dumplings and pork buns. Thank you, big brother."
Mi Xia looked at the big man, her eyes reddened over a meal of dumplings. This man was also her elder brother, and she felt bad too.
"Brother, what are you talking about? We are a family." Mi Xia quickly interrupted Mi Qiu.
"Yes, father, my sister is right, we are a family." Zhang Hongxia said with red eyes.
Mi Xia felt the changes in Zhang Hongxia, but she did have selfish motives when she first came. There were many children in the family and their life was not easy.
Who would accept the sister-in-law bringing her children to live with her? That would only make the already poor family even worse off.
This was not her fault. In those years when she was hungry and cold, and people's gossip was terrifying, she still let her married sister-in-law stay with her. This was enough to show that she was a kind person. It was just that the times did not allow it and she was just making a fuss because of poverty.
"Mom, it's delicious," Mi Xiaohuan said in a baby voice.
Mi Xia looked up at her elder brother again, and felt sad when she found that he ate a dumpling so slowly. It seemed that he was reluctant to eat it.
He wanted to eat slower so he could eat less and the children could eat more.
"Brother, eat more. There's still a lot in the pot. I'll make sure everyone is well fed."
After hearing this, Mi Qiu ate faster. In the end, everyone touched their stomachs and smiled with satisfaction, including Mi Xia.
Mi Xia, a modern person, is very satisfied with such days. Although there is no Internet or computer here, every day is very fulfilling.
Moreover, with her daughter, her eldest brother's family, and space here, she feels that the future is promising, and she wants to personally create a future for the people around her.
In the afternoon, Mi Xia brought a bowl of dumplings and prepared to give it to the village chief. Before, when she went to Mo's house, the village chief had said a lot for her, so she had to be grateful.
"Sister-in-law, I'm going to take a bowl of dumplings to Mojia Village. The village chief helped me a lot before, so I'll give him a bowl."
After saying that, Mi Xia put the dumplings in the basket and ran straight to the village chief's house in the next village.
When they were almost there, Mi Xia carried out another pheasant. Because they were walking on a small path and most people were outside, they didn't meet anyone along the way.
"Is this the village chief's home?" Mi Xia asked.
"Who is it?" A woman's voice came from the house.
"Aunt, it's me, Mi Xia. I'm here to give something to the village chief. Thank you for taking care of me and Xia Xia."
"It's Mr. Mo's fourth wife. Why are you so polite? Come in and have a seat." The village chief's wife pulled Mi Xia and walked into the yard.
After entering the house, Mi Xia handed the dumplings and pheasant to the village head's wife, "Aunt, we made dumplings at home so I brought a bowl over. Don't be disgusted. And this pheasant was hunted by my brother in the mountains, so I brought it here too."
The village head's wife smiled so much when she saw the food that her eyes were not visible. She said, "Take this rare thing back and give it to Xia Xia to eat."
"Aunt, Xia Xia has eaten. I brought this specially for you."
Seeing that Mi Xia really wanted to send the dumplings off, the village chief's wife went to the kitchen and brought over a bowl. Mi Xia poured the dumplings into the bowl and was about to leave.
"Aunt, I won't bother you anymore. There are still many things to do at my eldest brother's house, so I'll leave first."
The village chief's wife heard this and sent Mi Xia to the door. "Since you have something else to do at home, I won't keep you here. Bring Xia Xia over to play when you have time. I'll make you something delicious."
"Okay, auntie, I'll be leaving first."
"Go slowly on the road."
Mi Xia didn't take it seriously. Nowadays, food is very precious in everyone's home, so what the village chief's wife said was just a polite remark.
