The September breeze, carrying the sweet fragrance of osmanthus, drifted through the carved wrought iron railings of Saint Cherry Academy, causing the blinds of the student council office to sway gently. Yu Jiuyuan's fingers, holding the pen, paused. Her gaze fell on the open club activity funding application form, but out of the corner of her eye, she precisely caught sight of the figure at the door.
“Vice President,” she said, slightly lifting her pen to sign her name next to the “Rejected” column, her voice clear and gentle like morning dew, “Is today’s morning meeting minutes ready?”
Rong Shenghan leaned against the door frame, the cuffs of his white shirt rolled up to his elbows, revealing his well-defined forearms. Hearing this, he straightened up, placed the folder in his hand on the edge of the table, his movements casual yet carrying an indescribable rhythm: "The president is really observant, even cutting the budget for the gardening club to buy imported fertilizer by 30%."
“The humus soil behind the school is fertile enough,” Yu Jiuyuan said, capping her pen. When she looked up, her eyelashes cast a light shadow under her eyes, and her smile was as innocent as a harmless little animal. “The money saved might be able to buy a new microscope for the biology club. I remember Yuan Xu was complaining about the aging equipment last week.”
Rong Shenghan's gaze lingered on her face for half a second before he suddenly chuckled, "The president certainly cares about every club." He leaned closer, the faint scent of cedar wafting from his shirt. "However... I heard that Xie Zhecheng's astronomy club applied for a new star chart software, and you approved it very readily."
Yu Jiuyuan's fingertips traced the carved details on the corner of the table, her tone calm and even: "The astronomy club's equipment really needs updating, after all, there's an observation activity next month." She looked up to meet Rong Shenghan's probing gaze, her eyes like clear spring water, "Does the vice president think I'm biased?"
"I wouldn't dare." Rong Shenghan straightened up and picked up a document from the table. "I just feel that the president's standards seem to differ for different people." He turned to a page and tapped it with his fingertip. "For example, this student council attendance sheet. Xie Zhecheng was late for three consecutive weeks, and you didn't record it."
Yu Jiuyuan leaned back in her chair, relaxing her posture: "Xie Zhecheng's situation is special; he has to balance competition training." She paused, then suddenly chuckled, "As for the vice president, she's only been here for two weeks, yet she knows everyone's background so well. No wonder the principal made an exception and made you the vice president."
Hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor as Yuan Xu burst in, carrying a glass specimen box. His white lab coat was stained with dark brown marks. He walked straight to Yu Jiuyuan, his eyes gleaming with astonishing light: "President! Look at my newly made praying mantis specimen!"
The green praying mantis in the specimen box stretched out its wings, and even the patterns on its compound eyes were clearly visible. Yu Jiuyuan leaned closer to take a look, her tone filled with just the right amount of amazement: "It's so well done, even the proportions of its six legs are perfect."
“I used a new dehydrating agent,” Yuan Xu said, his attention completely focused on the specimen, his fingers unconsciously rubbing the box. “But it still can’t compare to the level of a professional laboratory…” He suddenly remembered something and pulled a small glass bottle from his pocket. “By the way, the begonia seeds you asked for last time, I’ve grown them into seedlings. They’re in an incubator. Do you want to go take a look?”
“Of course,” Yu Jiuyuan stood up and naturally took the glass bottle from Yuan Xu, her fingertips inadvertently brushing against the back of his hand. “I also have something I’d like to ask you.”
Yuan Xu's ears turned slightly red, and she subconsciously pushed up her glasses: "What is it?"
"Regarding the experimental procedures for cell fusion," Yu Jiuyuan followed him out, not stopping as she passed Rong Shenghan, only saying, "Vice President, please handle the remaining documents."
Rong Shenghan watched their figures disappear at the end of the corridor, his fingertips lightly tapping on the edge of the table. Sunlight streamed through the blinds, casting dappled patterns of light and shadow on his face. The smile on his lips gradually faded, and a hint of amusement flickered deep in his eyes.
The biology lab was filled with the mixed smell of formaldehyde and alcohol. Yuan Xu skillfully opened the incubator and carefully took out a transparent petri dish: "Look, the roots have already grown."
Yu Jiuyuan leaned closer to observe, her gaze falling on the tender green cotyledons of the seedling: "It's amazing. I tried to plant it last time, and it withered in three days." She turned her head to the side, her hair falling over her shoulder, her tone filled with sincere envy, "Yuanxu, you seem to be able to do everything well."
Yuan Xu's cheeks flushed even more, and she quickly looked away, pointing to the shelf in the corner: "I've been making butterfly specimens lately, would you like to take a look?"
“Okay.” Yu Jiuyuan’s gaze followed his movement, suddenly landing on a metal box in the corner of the workbench. The box was half-open, revealing neatly arranged silver scalpels inside.
Yuan Xu followed her gaze and explained, "It's used for detailed dissections, the one we used when processing bee specimens last time." He picked up the smallest knife, its tip gleaming coldly in the sunlight. "Look, this blade is even thinner than a scalpel."
Yu Jiuyuan's fingertips trembled slightly, then she regained her composure: "So exquisite." She suddenly remembered something, "By the way, the student council's joint meeting next Friday needs a representative from the biology club. Are you free?"
"A meeting?" Yuan Xu frowned, clearly uninterested in such administrative activities. "I'm going to the back mountain to collect moth specimens that day..."
“But this meeting is going to discuss adjustments to club funding,” Yu Jiuyuan’s voice softened, with a hint of pleading. “If no one from the Biology Club attends, their budget might be cut.” She looked into Yuan Xu’s eyes, her tone sincere. “I’m afraid it won’t be enough for me to fight for it alone.”
Yuan Xu's gaze lingered on her face for a few seconds before he finally nodded: "Then... I'll go." He lowered his head and began arranging the specimens on the table, his ears turning slightly red.
Yu Jiuyuan smiled inwardly. A 38% favorability rating—she was indeed quite easy to handle. Just as she was about to say something more, her phone suddenly vibrated in her pocket.
