Chapter 13 Rules and Bait

"Next, we will discuss the proposed changes to the attendance system, which will be explained by the vice president." Yu Jiuyuan's voice echoed through the auditorium via the microphone, but her gaze was fixed on Xie Zhecheng.

Rong Shenghan stood up, and the terms of the new plan immediately appeared on the projection screen. When the clause "Special club members who are late must sign twice" popped up, Xie Zhecheng's fingers tightened around the pen.

"I object." Sure enough, he raised his hand during the vote, his voice cold and clear. "Everyone should be equal before the rules, and there should be no special provisions."

"Is Xie talking about himself?" Rong Shenghan suddenly chuckled and pulled up the attendance record sheet. "Someone who has been late for three consecutive weeks doesn't seem to have the right to talk about equality."

A low murmur arose from the audience. Xie Zhecheng's ears turned slightly red, but he still looked directly at Rong Shenghan: "My lateness has a valid reason, and I have already made up for all the work."

"A reasonable explanation needs to be proven," Rong Shenghan pressed, "For example... the chairman's signature of approval?"

All eyes instantly focused on Yu Jiuyuan. She put down her pen, her smile as gentle as if she were mediating a dispute between friends: "Xie's competition training did take up time, I can testify to that." She paused, then changed the subject, "However, the vice president's proposal also makes sense. How about this, the proof of special circumstances can be jointly signed by the club leader and the student council?"

This compromise immediately garnered majority support. Xie Zhecheng looked into Yu Jiuyuan's perpetually clear eyes, and slowly loosened his grip on the pen. He ultimately abstained, neither violating his principles nor openly opposing her proposal.

As the system notification sounded in her mind, Yu Jiuyuan was busy organizing documents. Good, Xie Zhecheng's negative emotions were decreasing, indicating he was beginning to accept the notion that "rules can be flexible." The fortress of a perfectionist must first be cracked open from within.

After the meeting, Yuan Xu rushed to the front of the stage: "President, I just received news that a rare clearwing moth has been discovered in the back mountain!" He spoke quickly, his eyes shining brightly, "Going now will be just in time for its emergence!"

“Go ahead.” Yu Jiuyuan smiled and nudged him. “Remember to take some pictures when you come back. I’ve never seen a live clearwing moth before.”

Yuan Xu paused, then suddenly pulled a small box from her backpack: "This is for you." Inside the box was an amber-colored beetle specimen with a metallic sheen on its wings. "You said last time you liked color-changing crystals. This beetle's elytra change color under different lighting."

As Yu Jiuyuan took the box, Rong Shenghan happened to walk over: "President, would you mind going to the student council office on the way? There are a few documents that need to be signed."

Yuan Xu tactfully took his leave, his steps light as if he were walking on air. Yu Jiuyuan watched his figure disappear down the corridor before turning to Rong Shenghan: "Vice President, did you deliberately send him away because you have something to say?"

"I just feel that the president seems to be particularly indulgent towards Yuan Xu." Rong Shenghan walked alongside her, his voice low, "He even turns a blind eye to Yuan Xu playing on his phone during meetings."

“The biology club is currently working on an important project.” Yu Jiuyuan pushed open the office door, and the afternoon sun slanted across the carpet. “Besides, his phone wallpaper is a group photo of our student council members. Didn’t you notice?”

Rong Shenghan paused. Yu Jiuyuan had already walked to the filing cabinet, her back to him as she searched for documents: "Actually, what the vice president cares about more is Xie Zhecheng's abstention vote, right?" She turned around, holding an activity report from the astronomy club in her hand. "You proposed that plan to force him to oppose me, didn't you?"

The sunlight fell perfectly on her face, half bright and half dark, and a flash of coldness suddenly crossed her usually clear eyes, so quick it was like an illusion. Rong Shenghan watched her place the report on the table, her fingertips tracing Xie Zhecheng's signature, and suddenly chuckled, "As expected, the chairman knows everything."

“I’m just good at reading rules.” Yu Jiuyuan opened the document and signed it, the sound of the pen gliding across the paper was particularly clear. “Just like I know that you transferred to Saint Sakura not just to become the vice president.”

As she finished signing the last word and pushed the document towards him, she suddenly leaned closer, her voice so soft it was almost a whisper: "Rong Shenghan, guess what Xie Zhecheng's expression will be when he discovers that only I can interpret his observation data?"

The office clock struck three. Rong Shenghan watched her turn and leave, his fingertips lightly tapping on the astronomy club report. On the appendix of the report, a string of encrypted formulas was marked in extremely fine handwriting; it was Xie Zhecheng's submission from last week, and supposedly even the competition instructor couldn't decipher it.

When Yu Jiuyuan signed the document, she drew a small asterisk in the margin, the position of which corresponded precisely to the key variable in the formula.

This young lady really does treat everyone like a piece of equipment that needs careful tuning. Rong Shenghan picked up the file, a playful smile playing on her lips. She probably didn't realize that while she was tuning others, she had already become someone else's object of observation.

Another layer of ginkgo leaves fell outside the window, like golden bait quietly laid out by someone.
