The air in the villa felt like it was frozen.
When Yu Jiuyuan pushed open the study door, Rong Shenghan was sitting on the leather sofa, a document between his fingers, his gaze as cold as ice.
The floor lamp cast shadows of varying depths on his face, swallowing up his usual gentleness and leaving only a chilling indifference.
"You tampered with Yuan Xu's experimental library?"
Her voice trembled slightly, and the blue thread on her pinky ring shone with a glaring deep purple, the color of Rong Shenghan's fury, like silk soaked in ink, so oppressive it was hard to breathe.
Rong Shenghan raised his eyes, his gaze falling on her pale face. He didn't say anything, but simply threw the documents on the coffee table.
The moment the papers were scattered, the words "experimental data leak" and "broken capital chain" stung the eyes, and the Rong Group's seal in the lower right corner was as red as blood.
"He shouldn't have touched the remnants of the Ji family."
Rong Shenghan's voice was calm, yet carried an undeniable resolve: "Those gene samples contain Ji Luoqin's last bargaining chip. If Yuan Xu wants to purify and study them, she must bear the consequences."
Yu Jiuyuan staggered back half a step, feeling as if something was gripping her heart.
She knew what Yuan Xu was doing. That man, who was engrossed in biological research, never cared about worldly disputes. He simply wanted to decipher the secrets in the gene sequence, but he didn't expect to stumble into Rong Shenghan's minefield.
"He doesn't know!"
She looked up abruptly, the innocence in her eyes shattering into sharp edges. "Yuan Xu was just conducting an experiment; he has no interest in those conspiracies and schemes! You let him go, but the one you want to deal with is me. Come at me!"
Rong Shenghan suddenly chuckled, his laughter carrying a chilling undertone: "Coming after you? Yu Jiuyuan, what right do you have to negotiate with me?"
He stood up and approached her step by step, his shadow completely enveloping her.
His hand gripped her chin, the force almost crushing her bones: "Have you forgotten that you turned around and went to discuss the flower show plan with Xie Zhecheng? Have you forgotten that you could still smile at Lin Yanran's cold face?"
"Now, for Yuan Xu's sake, you want me to let him go?"
His fingertip jabbed hard into her pinky ring. "Is this ring sparkling again? Tell me, who did you wag your tail for today?"
The words "wagging its tail" were like poisoned needles, piercing Yu Jiuyuan's heart.
Looking at the jealousy and pain surging in his eyes, she suddenly felt that the man in front of her was terrifyingly unfamiliar.
This is Rong Shenghan, the seemingly gentle but actually extremely controlling heir of the Rong family, the pet she tamed but who is also secretly turning against her.
The blue light from the pinky ring flashed intensely, and Yuan Xu's negative emotions surged to an extreme level, like a silent scream.
Yu Jiuyuan knew that if this dragged on any longer, Yuan Xu's experimental library would really be lost, and that man who regarded research as his life would completely collapse.
She took a deep breath and, under Rong Shenghan's astonished gaze, slowly bent her knees and knelt on the cold floor.
The sound of his knee hitting the ground was exceptionally clear in the quiet study, like a hammer blow to Rong Shenghan's heart.
Yu Jiuyuan looked up at him, her eyes devoid of their usual cunning and arrogance, filled only with pure pleading, like a young beast driven to the brink of despair.
"Sheng Han, I beg you." Her voice was soft, but it carried an unprecedented humility. "Let Yuan Xu go, I'm begging you."
Her pinky ring pressed against the cold floor, the blue line tinged with a desperate gray.
Rong Shenghan's pupils suddenly contracted, and the hand that was gripping her chin abruptly released its grip, as if he had been burned.
He never imagined that this proud young lady would kneel down to him for another man.
"You..." His voice was terribly hoarse, his chest heaving violently, as if he was suppressing some surging emotion.
"I'll agree to anything you want." Yu Jiuyuan's forehead was pressed against the ground, her long hair falling down and obscuring her expression. "You can do whatever you want, as long as you let him go."
She recalled the scene when she begged Ji Luoqin; back then it was for Rong Shenghan, but now it was for Yuan Xu.
Fate is truly laughable; after all the twists and turns, she still had to bow down to the pet she had tamed.
Rong Shenghan looked at her figure lying on the ground and suddenly felt as if a hole had been torn in his heart, leaving him both painful and empty.
What he wanted was never her submission or her pleas, but her complete belonging and her undivided attention, with only him in her eyes.
But now, she knelt before him for someone else's sake.
"Get up." His voice was as cold as ice, yet it trembled almost imperceptibly.
Yu Jiuyuan didn't move, but stubbornly remained lying on the ground: "I won't get up unless you agree."
The study fell into a deathly silence, with only the heavy breathing of the two people mingling in the air.
After an unknown amount of time, Rong Shenghan suddenly chuckled, his laughter filled with self-mockery and despair.
“Yu Jiuyuan, you are really… very good.”
He turned and walked to his desk, picked up the phone, his fingertips turning white from the force: "Rescind the seizure order on the Yuanxu Experimental Library."
After hearing something said on the other end of the phone, he frowned, his tone becoming even colder: "I said I'm withdrawing! Don't you understand?"
After hanging up the phone, he didn't look at Yu Jiuyuan on the ground anymore. He just turned his back to her and said in a hoarse voice, "Get out."
Yu Jiuyuan's body stiffened for a moment, then she slowly stood up.
A sharp pain shot through her knee, a reminder of her earlier humiliation.
Looking at Rong Shenghan's tall yet lonely back, she suddenly wanted to say something, but found that her throat was blocked and she could not make a sound.
She turned and walked out of the study, her steps unsteady.
The blue line on the pinky ring gradually calmed down, and Yuan Xu's negative emotions disappeared, but Rong Shenghan's remained a bottomless purple, like a sky that would never clear up.
