Even before the morning mist had completely dissipated at St. Sakura Academy, the coffee machine in the student council office was already running.
Yu Jiuyuan watched as the brown liquid slowly poured into the porcelain cup, her fingertips unconsciously tracing the dark patterns on the cup's surface. It was a limited edition that Rong Shenghan had just sent yesterday, supposedly the work of an old European craftsman.
"The president seems to be getting more and more used to the things I give him." Rong Shenghan's voice came from the doorway. He was wearing a beige cashmere sweater, which made his complexion appear even more aloof.
The paper bag she was carrying smelled of buttered bread. "I passed by the bakery on the corner and saw your favorite croissants just coming out of the oven."
Yu Jiuyuan took the paper bag, her fingertips touching his hand, the warm touch sending a jolt through her like an electric current. A perfectly timed look of surprise crossed her face: "The vice president knows my preferences even better than I do."
As I opened the paper bag, I deliberately let the steam blur my glasses. "I casually mentioned last time that I wanted my croissants to have a crispy crust, and you actually remembered it."
Rong Shenghan leaned against the desk, watching her clumsily wipe her glasses, a faint smile flashing in his eyes: "Of course, I have to take the president's affairs to heart."
He changed the subject, "I have news from Lin Yanran. The three real estate developers that the Su family has allied with have indeed signed a private agreement. He said he wants to hand it over to you personally."
"Hand it over personally?" Yu Jiuyuan took a bite of the croissant, the crispy crust falling onto her skirt. "It seems Young Master Lin wants to take this opportunity to ease tensions."
When she looked up, there were still crumbs of bread on her eyelashes, making her look as innocent as a squirrel stealing food. "Does the vice president think I should give him this face?"
"How about we meet at the entrance of the biology lab?" Rong Shenghan tapped his fingertips lightly on the table. "Yuan Xu is going to demonstrate the results of cultivating bioluminescent butterflies today. Lin Yanran hates these 'poor academic studies' the most. Let him wait there for half an hour. It'll be a good opportunity to temper his arrogance."
Yu Jiuyuan glanced at the calculation that flashed in his eyes and suddenly chuckled, "The vice president is getting better and better at understanding my thoughts."
She took out her phone and sent a message to Lin Yanran, her fingertip pausing on the screen. "However, making him wait too long might backfire. After all, he is now our 'important informant'."
[Rong Shenghan: Emotional Fluctuations (Hidden) - Interest +5]
When the system notification sounded in her mind, Yu Jiuyuan pretended not to notice and continued typing with her head down.
She knew that Rong Shenghan had been testing her limits, just as she was testing his true intentions.
This back-and-forth tug-of-war is more interesting than something that's obvious at a glance, isn't it?
In front of the glass window of the biology lab, Yuan Xu was carefully placing a glowing butterfly into a display case. The butterfly's wings shimmered with a faint green light in the sunlight, a result of his fusion of firefly and clearwing moth genes.
Upon seeing Yu Jiuyuan enter, he immediately waved excitedly: "President! Look! They can adjust the intensity of their light according to temperature changes!"
Suddenly, the butterfly in the display case fluttered up, its fluorescent wings casting flowing spots of light on the glass. As Yu Jiuyuan leaned closer to look, she noticed a line of small characters engraved on the bottom of the case: "Presented to Jiuyuan—the first glowing butterfly."
[Yuan Xu: Affection +3, currently 54 (Triggers "Exclusive Gift" bonus)]
“It’s even more precious than the museum’s prized possessions.” She tapped her fingertips lightly on the glass. “Once we get the patent, we can use this technology to make fluorescent road signs, which could save many lives in mountainous areas without streetlights.”
Yuan Xu's eyes shone brightly, and even her voice carried a hint of excitement: "That's what I thought too! I wrote the application plan all night last night..."
He suddenly remembered something, and pulled a small notebook from his white coat pocket. "There are a few technical difficulties in here. Can you take a look?"
When Yu Jiuyuan took the notebook, she deliberately let her fingertips brush against his palm.
She could feel his momentary stiffness and the blush that quickly crept up his ears. This pure-hearted boy could always be ignited by the slightest touch, like the glowing butterflies he nurtured, whose entire field could be illuminated by the slightest stimulation.
The sound of leather shoes clicking on the floor echoed down the corridor. Lin Yanran, dressed in an inappropriately expensive suit, stood at the door with a grim expression: "Yu Jiuyuan, I brought the things."
He tossed a sealed bag onto the lab bench; inside was a stack of documents. “Sign it quickly after you’ve read it; my dad’s waiting for me to register with the student council.”
Yuan Xu was startled by this sudden arrogance and took a half step back, instinctively shielding Yu Jiuyuan behind her.
Yu Jiuyuan gently patted the back of his hand, signaling him not to be afraid. Then she picked up the document and looked through it. It was an internal agreement between the Su family and three real estate developers, which even marked the funding gap and mortgaged assets of each company.
“Young Master Lin is quite capable.” She pulled out a page and circled a name in red pen. “The owner of this company embezzled public funds to speculate in stocks. Give the evidence to the Economic Crime Investigation Team, and they’ll have him in a real mess in less than three days.”
Lin Yanran's pupils suddenly contracted: "Are you serious?" He thought Yu Jiuyuan just wanted to put the Su family in a bad light, but he didn't expect her to directly undermine the family's foundation.
"Otherwise what?" Yu Jiuyuan folded the document and put it into her handbag, her smile as innocent as a harmless rabbit. "Does Young Master Lin think that I asked you to steal this agreement for my own collection?"
She changed the subject, "The student council registration form is with Rong Shenghan. He should be in the astronomy club right now. Perfect, you can take a look at how Xie Zhecheng calculates nebula trajectories using formulas you can't understand."
Lin Yanran's face turned pale and then red, but she gritted her teeth and turned to leave.
Yu Jiuyuan watched his retreating figure and suddenly smiled at Yuan Xu, saying, "You see, an arrogant peacock only needs to pluck a few feathers to realize that it's not actually that great."
Yuan Xu nodded as if she understood, but her gaze fell on the corner of the document peeking out from her handbag.
