The library is always so quiet that you can hear the sound of pens scratching across paper.
Yu Jiuyuan sat by the window with a book about classical literature open in front of her, but her gaze was fixed on Xie Zhecheng not far away.
He was standing in front of the bookshelf, searching for information. His fingertips traced the spines of the books with precision and restraint. Even when pulling a book out, he deliberately used a light touch, as if afraid of disturbing others. This almost harsh self-discipline is Xie Zhecheng's unique trademark.
Yu Jiuyuan closed the book, stood up, and walked to his side: "What are you looking for?"
Xie Zhecheng turned around, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes, before regaining his composure: "We need art documents from the Renaissance period for our club activities."
“I know which row it is.” Yu Jiuyuan naturally walked to another row of bookshelves and pulled out a few thick picture books.
"These books contain many previously unpublished manuscripts, which may be useful to you."
Xie Zhecheng took the picture book, and his fingertips accidentally touched hers. He pulled his hand back as if he had been electrocuted.
He opened one of the books, and when his gaze fell on a sketch, he suddenly said, "I used the pen you gave me to revise the event plan."
"Um?"
"It has more warmth than computer typesetting." His voice was soft, but it clearly reached Yu Jiuyuan's ears.
This clumsy compliment made Yu Jiuyuan laugh: "President Xie, are you praising me, or the pen?"
Xie Zhecheng's ears turned slightly red as he closed the book: "Shall we sit over there?"
"good."
The two sat side by side in the reading area, sunlight streaming through the glass window onto the picture books, making Xie Zhecheng's serious profile appear even more gentle.
He would occasionally look up and ask her about the details of a certain art movement, and Yu Jiuyuan would always answer fluently. Occasionally, she would even point out small oversights in his notes, which only she knew.
In order to communicate with him smoothly, she reviewed three days' worth of art history in advance.
The essence of the art of balancing lies in accurately grasping the other person's preferences.
As I was leaving the library, I happened to run into Yuan Xu, who was carrying experimental equipment.
The boy's eyes lit up when he saw them: "Jiuyuan, thank you, President Xie." He held up the petri dish in his hand, "'Jiuyuan Powder' has stabilized! I made a specimen and saved one for you."
The pink mycelium in the petri dish was sealed in resin, like a solidified sunset.
Yu Jiuyuan took the specimen and touched it lightly with her fingertips: "It's very beautiful, thank you Yuanxu."
"You're welcome!" Yuan Xu smiled like a child, then suddenly remembered something, "Oh right, Rong Shenghan is waiting for you in the lab. He said he has something for you."
Upon hearing Rong Shenghan's name, Xie Zhecheng paused, then said to Yu Jiuyuan, "I'm going back to the club now."
"good."
Watching Xie Zhecheng's departing figure, Yuan Xu whispered, "President Xie doesn't seem to like me very much..."
"Nothing like that." Yu Jiuyuan ruffled his hair. "He's just aloof, don't overthink it."
Upon arriving at the laboratory, Rong Shenghan was sitting in front of Yuan Xu's workbench, toying with a glass container in his hand, inside which floated a few silver feathers.
Upon seeing Yu Jiuyuan, he stood up: "You've arrived?"
Yuan Xu said you have something for me.
Rong Shenghan took out a small silver box from his pocket. Inside lay a brooch shaped like a silver fox with outstretched wings and tiny emeralds inlaid in its eyes.
"Last time I saw your school uniform collar was empty, and I felt like something was missing."
"It's quite pretty." Yu Jiuyuan took the brooch, her fingertips tracing the cool metal. "When did the vice president become so considerate?"
“You’ve always been so considerate.” Rong Shenghan lowered his head and whispered in her ear, “Especially towards you.”
His warm breath brushed past my ear, carrying his unique aggressiveness.
Just as Yu Jiuyuan was about to speak, the laboratory door was pushed open, and Lin Yanran barged in. Seeing the two of them getting close, her face instantly darkened: "Yu Jiuyuan! The student council needs your signature on a document!"
He slammed the document on the table, his gaze piercing Rong Shenghan like a knife.
"Just leave it there," Yu Jiuyuan said calmly. "I'll go over after I've looked at Yuan Xu's specimen."
"Sign it now!" Lin Yanran insisted. "Otherwise, it will cause delays!"
Rong Shenghan raised an eyebrow: "Is Secretary Lin in such a hurry because he's afraid I'll eat your chairman?"
"I'm not afraid!" Lin Yanran retorted, "It's just business!"
“Then we’ll do it during official business hours.” Rong Shenghan grasped Yu Jiuyuan’s wrist and said to Yuan Xu, “Let’s borrow Jiuyuan for a while.”
He half-pulled Yu Jiuyuan out of the laboratory, while Lin Yanran was furious and jumped up and down behind him, but didn't dare to chase after them.
Walking into a quiet corridor, Yu Jiuyuan shook off his hand: "What are you doing?"
"Fuck you." Rong Shenghan lowered his head and kissed her, the kiss carrying a hint of urgent possessiveness, until she could no longer breathe before he let go.
"Seeing you chatting and laughing with Xie Zhecheng in the library, seeing Yuan Xu fawning over you, seeing Lin Yanran giving you the cold shoulder..."
His voice trailed off, tinged with a wronged stubbornness: "I don't like it."
Looking at the turbulent emotions in his eyes, Yu Jiuyuan suddenly realized that this seemingly docile wolf actually harbored the most intense possessiveness.
She tiptoed and kissed the corner of his lips: "So what do you want?"
"I'll hide you away." Rong Shenghan gripped her waist tightly. "Hide you where only I can see you."
“That won’t do.” Yu Jiuyuan smiled, a sly glint in her eyes. “My ‘dog’ has to learn to get along peacefully with other ‘pets’.”
She deliberately used the word "pet," with a hint of provocation and a touch of intimacy.
Rong Shenghan chuckled and nibbled at her earlobe: "That depends on whether the other 'pets' know their place."
