"..." Tang Xiu'e immediately shut her mouth, her face looking very ugly.
Jiang Hao grew impatient: "It's freezing! Do you guys really have to chat by the roadside? Let's go, get in the car first."
Before he finished speaking, he came forward and pulled on my car door.
But it wasn't pulled apart.
"Jiang Wan, open the door!" He looked at me, not even calling me "sister".
I smiled and said, "No rush, wait a bit."
Jiang Hao was completely confused and turned to look at his parents.
Jiang Haiyang finally spoke, uttering his first words upon seeing me, "Jiang Wan, did you come here specifically to play a trick on me?"
I said frankly, "Yes, a little. I want to see how miserable you are so I can tell my mom about it and make her happy over there."
Jiang Haiyang's face turned ashen with anger, and he snapped, "Let's go! We're ignoring her! We'll take a car and leave!"
He grabbed Tang Xiu'e and turned to move.
Looking at his legs, which seemed almost too weak to move, I knew he was seriously ill. I raised my voice to remind him, "If you leave, don't ask me for money for treatment."
Tang Xiu'e immediately pulled him back.
"Bear with it, your life is more important!" Tang Xiu'e whispered, trying to persuade her.
Jiang Haiyang gritted his teeth, "She's just kicking me when I'm down, can't you see that?"
Tang Xiue continued to persuade, "Then let her kick us when we're down, as long as she's willing to give us money."
Jiang Haiyang said angrily, "I'm going to ask Hailing for it. I refuse to believe that she would stand by and watch her own brother die!"
Tang Xiu'e sneered, "Forget it, none of you Jiangs have a conscience. I went there a few times, and she only gave me a few thousand yuan, like throwing money away to a beggar. Your brother-in-law and nephew almost punched me."
They spoke in low voices and kept a distance from me, but I have good hearing and I still heard them clearly.
No wonder Tang Xiu'e stopped going to Jiang Hailing and clung to me instead.
It turns out they were threatened over there and dared not go back.
I smiled, and the thought that the way I would torture them would be no less than getting punched over there made me incredibly excited.
Before they could come to a conclusion from their whispered discussion, the ride-hailing car I had called arrived.
"Alright, get in the car," I called out the window.
Tang Xiu'e turned to look at me, her face displeased. "Why are you getting in the car? Jiang Wan, what exactly do you mean by this?"
Just as I was about to answer, my phone suddenly rang.
Upon closer inspection, it was Su Shenglin calling!
He disappeared last night and gave me the cold shoulder. I thought he wouldn't contact me for the next few days, but then he suddenly called.
I hesitated for a moment, then picked up the phone and answered: "Hello..."
Su Shenglin's voice was hoarse and slightly sleepy as he asked, "Wanwan, are you still at home? I'll come pick you up in an hour."
"Pick me up?" I asked, puzzled. "Didn't you ignore me? Why are you coming to pick me up again?"
"Who's ignoring you?"
"I—" I was about to answer him when a horn suddenly sounded from behind the car. I then remembered that the ride-hailing car was still waiting, so I quickly leaned out of the window.
"Get in the white car in the back," I said, tossing my head and nodding behind me, deliberately speaking in a sarcastic tone. "We specially called a car for you, and you don't even have to pay for it. Aren't you being filial?"
Tang Xiu'e looked at me with a strange expression. "Why did you call another car?"
Jiang Hao asked unhappily, "Are you looking down on us? You won't even let us ride in your car."
"No, I'm just afraid you'll gang up on me, and I can't beat you all by myself." I answered half-jokingly, my disdain and wariness were genuine.
Before I even hung up the phone, Su Shenglin, who was on the other end, heard me talking to someone and asked suspiciously, "Who are you with? Did you go out again?"
"Yes, something came up at home, so I can't go to Su Garden with you today, oh..."
I was about to apologize, but before I could say anything, Su Shenglin interrupted me, "Wanwan, can't you at least let me know before you learn something? We originally agreed to pick you up at Su Garden this weekend."
I took a slow breath and calmly explained, "I called you last night, but you didn't answer. I sent you a WeChat message this morning, but you still didn't reply..."
"I'm sorry, I had a business dinner last night and got drunk. I just woke up and called back as soon as I saw the WeChat message—"
"..." I paused, suddenly at a loss for words.
It turned out he was drunk; no wonder his voice sounded hoarse and drowsy.
The ride-hailing car beeped and changed lanes to get on the road, so I had to get to the point: "But I can't make it over today. If you think it's necessary, we can go tomorrow."
I started the car and followed the route I booked online.
After a moment of silence, Su Shenglin's husky voice returned to its usual tenderness, "Wanwan, are you angry?"
I pursed my lips, suddenly feeling wronged.
Because I had to drive, I had to force myself to suppress my emotions, but I answered truthfully: "I am a little... I know you were angry yesterday too. You didn't answer my calls, and I thought—"
I didn't say the rest.
"What did you think? Did you think I was ignoring you?"
"I thought you wanted to break up."
"Silly girl, how could that be? I worked so hard to win you over, how could I just break up with you so easily?"
I pursed my lips again and remained silent.
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end before a voice came through again: "Are you outside right now?"
"Yes, I'm driving."
"Then you drive carefully first, and let me know when you're done, and I'll come find you."
My nose felt slightly sore, but thankfully I recovered quickly.
Knowing that there were problems between the two of us and that we should communicate properly, I didn't refuse. "Okay, I'll call you when I'm done with my work."
After hanging up the phone, I suddenly felt much lighter.
