I can't find the words to describe myself. I feel so ashamed that I can't even hold my head up in front of him.
Seeing my utter embarrassment and the desire to disappear into the ground, Su Shenglin very gentlemanly comforted me: "It's good to occasionally have a happy get-together with friends to release your frustrations and stress. Besides, no one else knows about your outburst that night except me—don't worry, I'll keep it a secret for you."
His last sentence was tinged with humor and a hint of... ambiguity in his eyes.
I stared at him, embarrassed, my expression frozen.
A moment later, she felt even more embarrassed, her cheeks burning.
My heart started pounding again, and my mind couldn't help but wander into all sorts of fantasies.
My woman's intuition tells me that something's wrong with how I'm getting along with him, something's really wrong.
But I can't just say it directly. What if the other person doesn't have those feelings at all? If I rashly point it out, it will not only make me seem presumptuous, but it will also make our relationship more awkward.
So, going along with his humor, I jokingly replied, "Then thank you—I'll treat you to afternoon tea today as a token of my appreciation."
"Okay." Su Shenglin smiled elegantly and raised his glass to me in a gesture of respect.
I raised my hot cocoa to him, then gulped it down, using the opportunity to hide my burning face and shimmering eyes.
Secretary Ji suddenly appeared out of nowhere, nodded politely to me, and then bent down to remind Su Shenglin, "Chairman Su, it's time. We have to go back to the company; we have a meeting."
That's when I realized that Su Shenglin was busy and had only taken time out of his busy schedule to come see me.
“Mr. Su, if you’re busy, then let’s leave it at that.” I stood up and smiled at him.
"Hmm." Su Shenglin also stood up, and Secretary Ji took his coat and put away his business laptop.
Su Shenglin stepped out of his seat, raising his arm slightly, "Let's go, let's go down together."
"Okay." I felt a little warm inside as I thought about spending some more time with him.
While waiting for the elevator, Su Shenglin suddenly turned to look at me: "Oh right, I almost forgot the important thing. It's my mother's birthday party tomorrow night, you have to come too—I forgot to bring the invitation, but it's a sincere invitation."
"Huh?" I was taken aback, and felt extremely embarrassed. "This...isn't this inappropriate? We're not related at all—"
The key point is, I can't even reach that level.
Su Shenglin explained, "My mother specifically told me a couple of days ago to invite you over, but those two days... you had some misunderstandings about me, so I didn't dare to bring it up."
I:"……"
"Don't worry, everyone here is a friend or relative, they're all easy to get along with. You might even make some rich heiresses and turn them into your VIP clients," Su Shenglin said to me with a smile.
I gasped, "How could that be? You must be joking."
It's the birthday banquet of the dignified matriarch of the Su family. How could I, a lowly and down-on-my-luck heiress, go to her place to develop clients?
Are you sure you won't get beaten up?
"It's not a joke, it's true. Remember to come tomorrow night, I'll send someone to pick you up," Su Shenglin emphasized again.
Seeing the sincerity on his face, I couldn't refuse and could only nod in agreement.
When the elevator arrived, Secretary Ji stepped forward and blocked the door with one hand, letting Su Shenglin and me go in first.
I held my bag properly with both hands and stood obediently next to him, like a primary school student who was afraid of his homeroom teacher.
"That night when I took you home, I ran into Mr. Gu at the club. It seemed like he was following us the whole time, waiting downstairs at your place all night—have you two... not sorted things out yet?" Su Shenglin asked casually as the elevator descended.
I was taken aback, slightly surprised.
So Su Shenglin knew that Gu Yanqing had been waiting downstairs at my place that night?
Actually, I only found out about this when I met Gu Yanqing at my grandmother's house on my birthday and heard him question me about my relationship with Su Shenglin.
I didn't expect Su Shenglin to know as well.
That's a bit awkward, especially considering that I lied to Gu Yanqing—saying that I slept with this man in front of me, and many times at that. I'm so embarrassed that my tongue is about to tie itself in knots again.
"Um... he doesn't agree to a divorce by mutual consent, so I have no choice but to file an appeal with the court. The hearing is on the 6th of next month." I felt guilty and didn't dare to look at him. I quickly glanced away and explained.
"The 6th of next month, that's still more than half a month away."
"Yes, that's how the court arranged it, there's nothing we can do about it."
"Hmm, no rush," Su Shenglin reassured me, then paused and added, "However, in general, the first divorce lawsuit is usually settled through mediation, and if it doesn't work out, you have to wait six months to file for divorce again, and then you can usually get a divorce."
"Yes, my lawyer told me to be prepared for a long battle."
So it will be at least six months before I can return to single status.
Su Shenglin nodded, and just then the elevator arrived, and we both stepped out.
At the entrance of the building, Su Shenglin's car was already waiting by the roadside.
"Goodbye, Mr. Su." I followed him to the car, raised my hand, and smiled goodbye.
Secretary Ji opened the back door of the car, and Su Shenglin turned to look at me, "Jiang Wan, see you tomorrow night."
I stood by the roadside, watching him get into the car and drive away. I stared blankly at the back of the car for a long while before I came back to my senses.
I suddenly remembered something and slapped my forehead.
How forgetful! We've talked so much, yet we still forgot that most important topic!
Why are Su Shenglin and his family so good to me?
However, since I'm going to the Su family's birthday banquet tomorrow, I secretly reminded myself that I must find an opportunity to ask them clearly tomorrow.
Thinking about Mrs. Su's birthday banquet invitation, I felt a surge of excitement. Such an honor was truly unexpected.
When I got home that evening, I opened the closet and looked for clothes one by one.
Since moving from the villa to this rented apartment, I don't have enough wardrobe space, and I haven't hung up many of my dresses. It's really troublesome to search through them one by one now.
