Before my aunt could finish speaking, I was already crying uncontrollably, sobbing uncontrollably.
"I understand, Auntie, I understand... I'll arrange things here as soon as possible and take Kang Kang back home."
Kang Kang is my son's nickname, given to him by his maternal grandmother, who hopes the little guy will grow up healthy and strong.
"Okay, don't worry too much. The doctor said that as long as the IV nutrition is continued, we can hold on for a few more days."
"Okay, I understand."
Even so, after hanging up the phone, I couldn't help but feel heartbroken and cried alone for a long time.
It wasn't until my son toddled over and threw himself into my arms that I was pulled a little out of my grief.
"Mommy, cry..." The little guy looked at my face covered in tears, raised his chubby little hand and touched my face.
I held my son's hand and hugged him tightly. "Kang Kang, we're going back now. We're going back to visit Great-Grandma."
“Great-grandmother…” my son repeated the pronunciation I made.
"Yes, great-grandmother, we saw it on our phones, remember?"
The little guy nodded, "I remember."
I got in touch with Chen Wanzhen, and she was overjoyed to learn that I was returning to China.
“There’s room at home, why don’t you come back here? I can help you take care of the kids.” Chen Wanzhen was still living in the large suite I rented when I left, and she warmly invited me to come back.
There's no need for formalities between old friends, so I gladly agreed and boarded my flight back home.
Li Yunwei and Chen Wanzhen came to pick them up at the airport together.
I pushed my luggage with one hand and my child with the other, and I could see them waving from afar.
"Welcome back to China! Kang Kang, come here, let your godmother hold you!" Li Yunwei greeted me first, and before I could get close, she rushed over and took my son, who was sitting in the stroller.
Chen Wanzhen was really funny; she ignored me and went over to stare at the child first.
"Tsk! People say sons resemble their mothers, right? This little guy is a complete spitting image of his father!"
Li Yun smiled and raised an eyebrow. "Right? I'm not exaggerating at all."
"Hmm! It really looks like him! Just put him in front of Mr. Su like this, and he wouldn't even need a paternity test to be sure it's his child." Chen Wanzhen spoke boldly, attracting the attention of the passengers next to her.
Completely ignored by them, I couldn't help but protest: "Are you two here to pick me up or to pick up this kid?"
"Heh, of course it's to pick up my godson, you're just incidental," Li Yunwei joked deliberately.
Chen Wanzhen turned around and opened her arms wide: "Jiang Wan, welcome back."
Hugging my friends, I felt much calmer. "Yeah, I'm finally back. It's so good to see you guys."
After exchanging pleasantries, we left the airport and returned to the city.
On the way, I called my aunt.
Knowing that my grandmother was in good spirits today and was awake, I couldn't help but feel anxious. "Then I'll go to the hospital to see her now."
"Aren't you tired after such a long flight? Especially Kang Kang, he's still so young, he'll definitely need to sleep." The aunt was worried that the child wouldn't be able to handle the travel.
I looked at the little one in my arms, and sure enough, he had already started to doze off.
Li Yunwei was driving, and Chen Wanzhen was in the passenger seat. She turned around and whispered to me, "If you trust us to take care of the child, then we can take the child back. You go to the hospital first."
I thought it was feasible, so I told my aunt about it.
After the car entered the city, Chen Wanzhen sat in the back to help me look after my son. I got off at the roadside and took another taxi to the hospital.
My grandmother knew I was back and waited for me excitedly.
When I saw my grandmother again, I didn't recognize her for a moment.
Every time I video chat, the phone camera has a built-in beauty filter, which always makes people look younger.
When I finally met her in person, I realized how much my grandmother had aged in just over two years.
“Xiao Wan… is back, is back—” Grandma had an oxygen tube in her nose and spoke very weakly. Her wrinkled and weathered old face trembled with excitement when she saw me.
Tears welled up in my eyes instantly. "Grandma, I'm so sorry... I'm late. I'm so unfilial—"
My aunt patted my shoulder gently and whispered comfortingly, "Don't blame yourself, Grandma isn't upset with you."
"Where is the child...?" Grandma asked.
“Kang Kang fell asleep on the way. It wasn’t convenient for me to carry him, so I asked a friend to pick him up first. Tomorrow, after we’ve packed up and you’ve had a good rest, I’ll bring Kang Kang back so you can have some fun.”
I coaxed the old lady, hoping to keep her excited and happy for a little longer.
"Okay, okay... The child is young and the weather is cold, so you must take good care of him and make sure he doesn't get sick..." the old man instructed worriedly.
"Yes, I know."
Grandma hasn't rested in a long time while waiting for me, and she's feeling drowsy again now.
I held the old lady's hand and waited until she fell asleep before gently getting up.
Walking over to the sofa, Auntie whispered, "Grandma was so happy to see you. She thought... she wouldn't be able to wait for you to come back."
My eyes were red, and I thought to myself that I had to come back no matter what.
"Alright, you should go back and take care of the child. I'll take care of things here. You should get some rest and sleep first. You can bring Kang Kang back tomorrow. There's no rush."
My aunt had barely finished speaking when my phone rang in my pocket before I could even respond.
When I took it out and saw Li Yunwei, my first thought was that my son had woken up and they probably couldn't handle it.
"Weiwei, I'll be back in a bit," I said as soon as the call connected.
Unexpectedly, Li Yunwei paused, seemingly stammering, "Xiao Wan, um... cough, you—"
Her hesitant and stammering words gave me a bad feeling. "Weiwei, what's wrong?"
There was a sound coming from the other end of the phone, as if the phone had been taken over by someone else.
