Chapter 123 Lacking Everything

This is how parting is. Huo Xiaolong watched the three figures gradually disappear into the distance, biting his lower lip to stop himself from crying out loud.

This is a heartache I've never experienced in my past life. To understand the joys and sorrows, the loves and hates, the happiness and sadness of life, one must have a heart.

The little dumpling placed its hand on its chest, feeling the same beating sensation as in its previous life.

They have the same frequency, and are even much healthier.

But why, why does it feel so bad?

"Waaaaaah, Mom, I miss Dad!"

Huo Shuwen had only just turned the corner when Huo Xiaolong burst into tears. "My past life was ultimately wasted," she thought.

"Don't cry, your dad will be back next month."

New recruits whose homes are not far from the garrison have one day off per month to go home. Others also have this, but they are too far away to go back.

The little dumpling nodded earnestly. Seeing her daughter crying her eyes out, Cen's mother nudged Zhao Kai.

Zhao Tanhua was a little worried, indicating that he shouldn't worry about Huo Xiaolong's homework these past few days. Huo Xiaolong was bright, even a genius. But even the best child needs to be able to write. He couldn't even finish writing twenty large characters in seven days, and what he wrote was all messy. Even so, A-Cen was still spoiling him.

The man looked at the sobbing little girl and said in a low voice

"At most, I won't assign her any homework for the next few days, so she can catch up on what she's already done."

This won't do. If his two mothers spoil him any longer, Huo Xiaolong won't even be able to finish memorizing the Thousand Character Classic. He's smart, but he can't go on without reading.

"Mom, do you think Dad will be cold? Will he go hungry?"

In the past few days, Huo Xiaolong's mind has been flashing back to various famous historical battles, such as being cut off from supplies, being trapped in a prison and unable to get out alone, and even thinking about how to die in the wild in winter without warm clothing.

“Your dad is a new recruit, and he’s so capable. You think these things shouldn’t happen.”

In Cen Ang's eyes, Huo Shuwen and the others were nothing to worry about. Just looking at their skills, in the entire military camp, only Xiao Lanyi and his trusted confidants could hold their own for more than a few moves.

Furthermore, new recruits cannot go to the battlefield. Xiao Lanyi is not stupid. Why would he throw people into the battlefield before they are properly trained, just to make them die for the enemy?

"No! I have to cook for my dad!"

Huo Xiaolong, who was lying comfortably on Cen Ang's lap, suddenly sat up and said.

"Good girl, Long'er, your father and the others eat different things than us, they'll all spoil by then," Mother Cen said, picking her up and putting her back in her original position.

Military rations aren't just about taste; they also need to be filling, energizing, and have a long shelf life.

"I know, Mom."

Then let's make military rations. It's not like she hasn't eaten them in her past life. Making self-heating rice is a bit far-fetched, but making dried meat and fried noodles is still possible.

However, Huo Xiaolong doesn't have much free time now.

"Mom, can you talk to Uncle Zhao about this?"

"What are you discussing?"

"Can we skip class for the next two days?"

The students at the school have holidays, but she only gets two days off a week, which isn't even enough time for her to do anything else.

Cen Ang held her small face in his palm, pinched it, and then said...

"no!"

The little girl's bright eyes suddenly dimmed, and she lay motionless on the bed.

I hate going to school.

In the end, Zhao Kai gave her time to tinker with things on her own, since the third-ranked scholar also didn't have time for class. With preparations underway at the border and the capital city far away, every citizen of Great Yan should know how many sacrifices the border troops had made for the country.

He went into seclusion to write articles. Zhao Kai's name was unremarkable in the literary circles of the Great Yan Dynasty; he couldn't say anything about being a gentleman for a woman. He had to become a master, a master on par with great Confucian scholars. He wanted his words to make every single one of them make the scholars of the world ponder for several breaths.

"Aunt He, I don't have enough mutton."

Huo Xiaolong felt embarrassed to ask He Qingzhu for things because the young lady had the same problem as her: she didn't have enough horsehair either.

"We don't even have enough horsehair anymore."

The two, one big and one small, remained silent for a while. After a while, Cen's mother said...

"I have a girl in my building who has a good relationship with the young master of the Zhou family. Why don't we try to get in touch with his family?"

He Qingzhu shook her head and said

"They can only bring small things, and besides, there are too many sheep and horses; they're not easy to manage."

The little dumpling's jerky is already quite impressive; it not only keeps well but is also delicious, with a perfect balance of spicy, savory, and other flavors. Her dad will be back in a few days, and she'll let him take some home. Her little savings are already almost gone from making this jerky.

Huo Xiaolong is so eager for He Qingzhu that he's practically turned into a statue waiting for her husband. He just doesn't have enough money to spend; the more he earns, the more she spends.

"This is the dividend for this round; ladies, please count it."

He Yi nodded and accepted the silver notes with both hands. With an abacus beside her left hand and a brush in her right, she calculated the month's share in less than three incense sticks' time.

"The accounts all match."

Miss He nodded and stood up to say

"I'll go back and think of something. If you two sisters have any ideas, please send someone to tell me."

Ordinary people can afford boar bristle toothbrushes without a shortage of raw materials, but there are few horses in the Great Yan. The border town is a little better off, but that's still not enough. Wealthy people use things quickly.

They replace these toothbrushes almost every month, buying a dozen or more at a time, enough for the whole family.

Fried noodles are easy to make, requiring almost no skill. All you need is a lot of malt, and the resulting fried noodles are fragrant and sweet. Just add boiling water and some dried meat, and you can have a meal.

It's filling and keeps you full.

"Um...girl, I'm really desperate, that's why I'm begging you. Do you see if there's a girl in the building who's available?"
