The group lost interest in shopping and hurriedly returned home.
At the doorstep, He Yi pushed Huo Xiaolong's back and said...
"Go stay with your mother-in-law for a while, then come back for lunch."
Today is our monthly day off, so the girls don't have to practice and can sleep in. The sun is high in the sky, and the habitual time difference makes the ladies in the building get up for lunch.
Huo Xiaolong didn't say anything, just nodded in agreement. Her mother looked fine and seemed to be alright. Besides, her brother had been kicked out along with her, so they were sharing the hardships together.
He Yi and Huo Shuwen returned to the main house, took off their cloaks, revealing their blood-stained cotton-padded jackets.
Huo Shuwen was startled and felt dizzy. He asked in a trembling voice.
"Ayi?"
The woman shook her head and said...
"It's not my blood, Brother Wen, please boil some water for me."
The blood wasn't just on her clothes; it flowed down He Yi's neck, and the stench of blood made her nauseous.
Her first murder was met with remarkable calm, her heart unmoved. He Yi looked at her hands; they were well-maintained recently, slender and long, yet plump and fair, with her nails gleaming with a bluish sheen, soft and pearly.
These are the same hands that just took two lives.
Dying is far less difficult than living. In the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, more than thirty years of life have been wasted.
Huo Shuwen filled the stove with firewood and the pot with water, then hurriedly returned to the main room.
"Ah Yi, are you alright?"
The man held her tightly in his arms, unsure how to comfort her. His wife had grown up in the capital and been raised like a young lady from a prominent family; how could she have been so frightened? She must be terrified.
"I'm really not hurt, look."
He Yi turned around in front of him and said
"Were you frightened?"
Huo Shuwen's eyes reddened slightly. How could he have let his wife go through something like this? It was his fault for not being careful enough. The man stroked the back of her hand, pressed his forehead against it, and put his arm around her waist, continuing to speak.
"If you're unhappy about something, tell me. Don't keep it to yourself."
His wife must have been terrified to be so calm after killing someone for the first time. She was acting just like usual even after such a big incident.
Huo Shuwen could still remember the feeling of killing for the first time. The life that had been shouting and full of energy at him just moments before was suddenly silenced, as quiet as a roadside weed, as if it had never existed in the world.
I'm fine.
He Yi lowered her voice and spoke to him in her usual coquettish manner.
She was really alright, but Brother Wen was frightened. The woman squatted down, cupped Huo Shuwen's face in her hands, and pressed it against him, continuing to speak.
"I'm still a little scared."
Why don't you just have a good cry? This man is such a worrywart; her calm demeanor really scared him.
He Yi spoke in a soft voice, her voice trembling slightly with tears.
"Brother Wen, I'm scared~"
No, I'm not scared at all, but I have to appease men.
Huo Shuwen hugged his wife and said...
"It's okay, just cry if you want to, it'll make you feel better."
He Yi nestled into the man's arms and began to sob, occasionally squeezing out a few tears; in general, it was all bark and no bite.
She rubbed her eyes hard, then rubbed her hands against the man's clothes a few times, and said...
"Brother Wen, go check if the water's ready yet, it's filthy!"
Blood all over her body, it's disgusting! She needs to wash right away! She'll continue crying after she washes.
"Okay, I'll bring it in for you. You rest here."
Huo Shuwen carried the wooden tub for bathing into the house and carried the tub back and forth to fetch water into the house.
He Yi undressed behind the screen. By this time, the bloodstains had completely dried and turned brown, sticking to her fair and tender belly.
The woman stepped into the bathtub and said...
"Brother Wen, could you go to the brothel and get me some flower petals?"
Huo Shuwen listened to the commotion outside the screen, not daring to leave her side for even a moment. Upon hearing his wife's request, he tiptoed to the backyard of Fengyue Tower.
The man had barely landed when he bumped right into his son.
Huo Xiaocheng was telling Chunying what happened during his outing that day. The girl looked nervous as she listened, tugging at his sleeve and urging him to hurry up and finish.
Just then, Huo Shuwen jumped over.
"Why didn't you use the door, Uncle?" Chunying asked.
"in a hurry"
"Uncle, please speak."
Get to the point, no more beating around the bush.
"Are there any flower petals?"
"ah?"
This question startled Chunying. What would a man need that thing for?
"For your aunt's toiletries"
"Oh, oh, oh, oh!" Chunying hurriedly went back to her room to get some flower petals.
Huo Xiaocheng looked unhappy. He had finally managed to get Chunying to be close to him for a little while. His father was so annoying.
Huo Shuwen was also dissatisfied with his son. "Your mother has just gone through such a big thing, and you still have the mood to talk about love. It's better to raise a blockhead than a son."
"Father, don't worry too much about Mother."
He now knows that the ability to kill without any emotional reaction is a two-way genetic trait; both his father and mother were somewhat affected. Huo Xiaocheng swears for the rest of his life that his mother was completely unaffected.
Huo Shuwen didn't say anything, but glared at him, put away the petals Chunying handed him, stuffed a coin into his pocket, and returned to the Huo family.
"Why is he glaring at me?" Huo Xiaocheng asked Chunying.
The girl smiled and said
Did you upset your uncle?
He's unhappy every day.
The boy said expressionlessly, and then the two continued to talk about the story they hadn't finished telling.
He Yi was soaking in the bathtub, her mind replaying the past.
What exactly went wrong that made Brother Wen think she couldn't handle things? Women don't reject this feeling; on the contrary, they like it.
This feeling of being valued and cherished is something she had longed for but couldn't obtain for the past ten years or so. Now that she has it, she cherishes it even more.
