The Rolls-Royce arrived at 4 p.m. as agreed.
Meng Jiuyi wore a white dress that went past her knees, and her hairband wrapped around her half-curled long hair and tied into a bow on her head. The setting sun shone through the sycamore trees like scattered gold, and seemed to favor the corner where she stood.
Xu Yanzhi had already seen her in the car. When Uncle Zhuang opened the door for him to get out, his gaze fell on her without any attempt to hide it. He was gentle and gentlemanly, but he made Meng Jiuyi very nervous as she walked that short distance.
"I rarely see you dressed like this," he said.
Meng Jiuyi's clothes consisted mostly of shirts and pants, making it easy to escape. She used to climb walls and windows frequently when secretly filming, and skirts were simply not practical.
Moreover, she didn't want to wear white, as being pure and innocent would make her seem easy to bully.
This color was one that his ex-girlfriend, Su Yan, liked to wear, and it was also something Meng Jiuyi bought temporarily after returning from the hospital.
"I just... wanted to change my mood."
The man kept staring at her, so long that Meng Jiuyi couldn't stand it anymore and looked away.
Is that strange?
Xu Yanzhi shook his head and smiled.
How could that be? No matter how she dresses, people can't help but stare at her striking features. Even white seems to favor her. She looks good whether she's wearing light or heavy makeup.
After getting in the car, the Rolls-Royce drove away from Lingnan Road, around the winding mountain road, and the guard post set up at the top of the mountain automatically raised to confirm identity.
It looks like a manor for entertaining distinguished guests.
But the horse farm stretches for miles, yet there isn't a single guest in sight. After passing through lush green hills, the glass houses, brilliantly illuminated by crystal chandeliers, come into view.
After getting off the bus, Meng Jiuyi asked somewhat hesitantly.
"Is this Mr. Xu's home?"
Xu Yanzhi chuckled and explained thoughtfully, "This is the manor that Cen Dong is eager to get rid of, and I just happened to be the sucker."
To allow the two horses to run freely, he indeed spent 300 million and willingly became a major scoundrel.
Upon entering the restaurant, the mountain wind was strong, so Xu Yanzhi asked someone to bring her a shawl.
Considering her tastes, tonight's meal will mainly consist of Asian dishes. The red wine has been aerating for quite some time, and the waiter slowly poured it into the glass in front of Meng Jiuyi.
Opposite, towering, unbleached wooden shelves were filled with red wines arranged at an angle. This was merely a corner of the man's wine cellar, intended solely for display. Meng Jiuyi had heard from Tan Ni that he was a seasoned wine collector, and seeing him now, he couldn't help but be somewhat shocked.
Why does Mr. Xu like red wine?
Xu Yanzhi didn't expect her to ask this question. Some of his friends have too much money to spend, pursuing flawless crocodile skin and carelessly displaying and ruining century-old paintings.
His hobby of collecting wine isn't considered expensive, and no one has ever asked him about it.
"It's not a sophisticated reason, I just want to calm down and savor the sweetness in the dry tannins."
"This is already very elegant to me."
Meng Jiuyi's eyes were full of longing. "If you can taste sweetness from bitterness, your life will definitely be very self-sufficient."
It wasn't that no one had praised him with more words, but at this moment, Xu Yanzhi's heart softened because of her words.
Her attention was on the glass house, on the man across from her, but not on the bottle of red wine in front of her.
Naturally, no one knew that this was Xu Yanzhi's most beloved bottle.
It was the same year her mother was born, and the wine cellar manager who usually took care of it thought the bottle would be sealed away forever.
Xu Yanzhi only sipped his drink lightly because he was about to drive.
Meng Jiuyi wasn't a connoisseur of red wine, but he could still pretend to swirl the glass and took a sip.
A wave of bitterness surged straight to the top of his head.
"How is it?" he asked.
She swallowed it like a pill and said.
"It tastes good."
Xu Yanzhi couldn't help but chuckle softly.
“Miss Meng, your expression doesn’t tell you that.”
Meng Jiuyi was a little embarrassed.
"Don't you like red wine?"
She nodded awkwardly, disliking anything bitter.
She had previously served Tan Yuchen plenty of red wine, coffee, and tea. After a while, the man probably realized that she couldn't handle fine food, so he simply served her beverages instead.
Xu Yanzhi summoned a servant and said something to him.
Someone came up and placed two cans of Coke on the table—this stuff didn't originally belong here; it was just a condiment the chef was using to cook, but now it was hastily served.
I don't fit in here.
Meng Jiuyi felt a sour, bitter feeling, as if a light drizzle had fallen on her heart.
Fortunately, he made his rejection clear back then, which is an inappropriate thought for her.
He admired Frege and Aristotle, loved nature and all things elegant, and enjoyed finding peace and quiet amidst the hustle and bustle.
While he, like a hormonal wine, aged longer and longer, Meng Jiuyi associated with trash. As a child, she loved reading fairy tales and dreaming of love, but after discovering it was a huge scam, she became obsessed with the case of her husband's murder and spent all her time on the road to making money without any proper work.
If he were to peruse her hollow interior, he would likely immediately discover that it was a book riddled with worms.
fine....
She said softly, "I'm sorry, Mr. Xu made a fool of himself in front of everyone."
Xu Yanzhi's voice held a hint of helplessness, "What does Miss Meng take me for? A pampered young master who doesn't care about worldly affairs and just waits to be served, or a rigid old scholar?"
Imagine it as snow on a high mountain, or the moon reflected in water.
Meng Jiuyi silently recited in his heart.
The man hooked his index finger onto the buckle and gently pulled it upwards, causing the bubbles to surge up. It was an ordinary action, but when he did it, it looked incredibly graceful.
"That little tail that followed me for so long back then, didn't it know that after running I would go to the school convenience store to buy a drink?"
He was lost in his memories of the past and blurted it out without thinking.
Their eyes met across the long table. Meng Jiuyi's breath hitched, and her eyelashes trembled like butterflies hurrying to escape.
She thought these were all unspoken secrets, but she never expected him to suddenly reveal them, leaving her so embarrassed that she didn't know where to look.
Xu Yan belatedly realized what was happening and, for the first time, impolitely changed the subject. Seeing how she avoided him, he lowered his head and gave a subtle, almost imperceptible smile.
Let this scorching wavy line stretch endlessly.
It was almost 7:30 when we finished dinner. Uncle Zhuang was waiting outside, with two cars parked in front and behind him.
This time was less than half an hour before the latest time Xu Yungan had stipulated for him to arrive.
Uncle Zhuang stepped forward and reported, "The chairman has already had several phone calls made. Shall we leave now?"
He had to attend a banquet later; tonight was very important. Naturally, Uncle Zhuang would escort Meng Jiuyi back.
Xu Yanzhi nodded, about to give some instructions, when a sudden cry of pain came from behind him. He turned around and saw that she had fallen to the ground as she descended the last two steps, her face contorted in pain.
He crouched down to examine her feet, his brows furrowing slightly.
How could you be so careless?
"Mr. Xu, if you have something else to attend to, please go ahead. I'm fine." Meng Jiuyi looked up at him, the lamplight casting a shadow on her dejected and aggrieved face.
Xu Yanzhi looked at her intently, his dark eyes filled with a misty haze and a hint of helplessness.
The next moment, Meng Jiuyi was picked up by him, and Xu Yanzhi instructed Uncle Zhuang to drive the Rolls-Royce back.
"But the chairman—"
Xu Yanzhi said without a doubt, "He is the main character in this kind of occasion, and he doesn't care about having me as a supporting character."
Meng Jiuyi, who was buried in his arms, never looked up from beginning to end, but her ears were bright red.
The man whispered in her ear just now.
"Stop acting, just tell me if you want to stay."
