In the past, Meng Jiuyi would feel guilty when she heard such words, but not anymore.
There was no need for acting; his tears soaked his chest.
"She wanted to leave quietly."
Xu Yanzhi hummed in agreement. "Is the other party sick?"
"She was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer, but yesterday, while passing by a construction site near the hospital, a gas cylinder fell and hit her."
Gao Xianyue has helpers.
Otherwise, how could they have mobilized the hospital's construction team to create this accident?
After Meng Jiuyi finished speaking, she tested his reaction. If this helper was Xu Yanzhi, she was not sure if she would bite his neck in a moment of impulse.
Xu Yanzhi paused for a moment, then felt a pang of pity for her friend, a feeling that extended to her as well.
"Is there anything else I can do? Are her family members alright?"
"They're all gone."
Meng Jiuyi said defiantly, "Besides, you also have to take care of your precious little sister, how could I dare to trouble you?"
Xu Yanzhi put her in the car, but instead of getting in, he squatted down in front of her.
Are you angry?
A tear rolled down her face. "What right do I have to be angry with Young Master Xu? But I'm petty and I would never date a man with a sister. I won't look for you again when I go back this time, and don't look for me again!"
After she finished speaking, Xu Yanzhi's smile vanished. Although he was squatting, he appeared to be looking down at her. He gently wiped away the tears from the corner of her eyes with his fingertips.
"Don't say things like that out of spite."
Meng Jiuyi could sense that he disliked people making unreasonable demands.
But having already said it, Meng Jiuyi turned away, showing no intention of backing down.
Instead, Xu Yanzhi's eyes softened, and he said in a deep voice, "The Xu family has a century-old foundation. Since the Gao family is tied to this surname because of the marriage alliance, I can't just abandon them. It was wrong of me to leave you behind the night before last. I'm sorry for making you feel wronged."
Meng Jiuyi's tears kept falling.
She suddenly realized that this man had a complete and unshakeable order, and that family always took precedence over everything else.
Is it because there isn't enough love?
His excellent manners always made him express his love in a way that was so complete that Meng Jiuyi only realized now that she hadn't fully entered his heart yet.
Even if I tell him the whole story now, he still won't choose her.
Her tears weakened, falling pitifully onto the carpet.
"What kind of insignificant person am I? What right do I have to feel wronged? Go back, eat a couple of pickled radishes, look in the mirror, and you'll know what you really look like."
Xu Yanzhi didn't know whether to be angry or amused; this girl could curse without using any vulgar language.
"Why aren't you qualified?"
He paused, his fingertip resting on her moist eyes, "At the banquet the night before last, Gao Jingchen asked you that question during the game. He had told me about it beforehand."
Meng Jiuyi was a little confused. If she had already told her, why did she have to ask her again?
He couldn't bear to let go, but all the facts told Xu Yanzhi that he had already become a latecomer, and that someone had already taken the lead when he wasn't paying enough attention.
Until Gao Jingchen's phone call.
His eyes were dark and unfathomable, unsure if he only needed a reason—all the facts told Xu Yanzhi that he had her everything in the past, and he would never be willing to let the story end here.
"If Gao Jingchen doesn't tell you, are you planning to never tell me?"
Meng Jiuyi was much sharper than at the banquet: "Does it matter whether I say it or not?"
He said solemnly, "It is very important to me."
She looked at him, and when she stopped crying, her gaze seemed very distant, so distant that Xu Yanzhi felt uneasy.
"Xu Yanzhi, have you ever thought that all those misunderstandings and coincidences are actually a sign from heaven that we're not really meant to be? If two people are truly meant to be together, it's easy; they wouldn't go through all this trouble."
Meng Jiuyi suddenly felt a lump in her throat and wanted to tell him to get lost.
This is the last time she'll let him go. Even without him, she can find a way to kill Gao Xian Yue.
In that instant, Xu Yanzhi felt as if his heart was being torn apart, and he suddenly felt that she was very far away.
His gaze was fixed on her, his expressionless face making it hard to breathe.
"I am atheist."
He held her face in his hands. "No matter what the reason is after we reunited, since you chose to provoke me, the outcome is not up to you alone."
The man remained calm, yet there was an undercurrent of tension.
Meng Jiuyi was slightly startled, as if she had witnessed another side of him.
Her shoelaces came undone near his feet, so Xu Yanzhi tied them for her. He had driven himself here today. He held her wrist and pulled her into his arms. The back seat wasn't very spacious, so she could only sit sideways on the man's lap.
The heavy weight in his arms swept away his fatigue of the past two days. Xu Yanzhi tightened his grip, making her look at him.
“I made you feel wronged by the things I did in the past, but now I’m pursuing you. I haven’t done enough, but you should at least let me know where I’m lacking.”
A tiny bit of genuine sincerity, mixed with feigned affection, welled up inside Meng Jiuyi as she looked into his eyes.
“I haven’t done enough in any way. Xu Yanzhi, do you know my family situation? My father doesn’t love me and my mother doesn’t care for me. I’m even being looked down upon and laughed at for my status.”
She stopped pretending and laid bare her most vulnerable side to him. "But it's not that I don't love myself or like to follow someone anonymously, or that it should start with the name of marriage."
How arrogant she is! She's already setting a wildly unrealistic ending for this relationship before it's even started.
Xu Yanzhi stared at her without compromise, his eyes swirling with emotion.
Meng Jiuyi smiled charmingly, "I was just joking with Mr. Xu. I've already hugged you, so I won't charge you interest. You can let me go now."
She pushed him away and was about to get down, but he pulled her back with his large hand.
"I won't get married! I also won't get involved in a relationship that has no future."
Meng Jiuyi's chin was lifted by him, almost to the point of being kissed, and she could clearly see the domineering look in his eyes. "But I don't accept multiple relationships. The love I understand is exclusive, and I can't share my partner with anyone."
His misty eyes held a profound meaning that could be seen through, which startled Meng Jiuyi, who wondered how he had figured it out.
But it was precisely because he saw through her so completely that she lost all sense of shame.
Her tea ceremony skills were already superb; she closed her eyes.
"...It's because he won't release them."
So be it. Just don't expect her to show up. Whoever killed whom, just consider it venting her anger.

Goodnight, 2 AM.
I remember posting the first draft of the wedding-crashing plot on VB. I wonder if it ever got to that point, since the male and female leads have already broken free from the outline and have their own consciousness (facepalm).
[Leaving on the 19th. I'm taking a day off tonight because I'll be getting off work too late. See you all tomorrow!]
