Chapter 300: Armor Can Be Cast and Removed
Lu Yannan unconsciously rubbed the embossed pattern on the cup handle with his fingertips, his Adam's apple rolling slightly: "Don't worry about her problems."
There was a hint of helplessness in his voice, and out of the corner of his eye he saw his sister stealing the cocoa powder on the tiramisu.
Pei Mo Ning tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, her pearl earrings gleaming with a gentle sheen. "Man Man is curious about me?"
She smiled and pushed the mango mousse across the way: "Would you like to try this?"
"Thank you, Sister Pei!" Lu Shiman's eyes suddenly lit up, and the silver fork accurately poked the mango cubes on the top: "Actually, I'm just a little curious."
"It's mainly because my eldest brother said you like to put onions in your vegetables, so..." She lowered her head shyly: "I became interested in you."
Lu Yannan put the coffee cup on the table, pinched his brows and sighed: "I want you to relax your mind, not to add green onions to the green vegetables."
Lu Shiman was stunned. If it wasn’t green vegetables with onions, then what were those dishes with onions that she had just thought of in the car?
"Brother, please speak more clearly next time. Your unclear words can easily lead to misunderstandings."
She confidently turned the tables and pushed the plate in front of Lu Yannan with a smile: "Really? I specifically asked the chef to sprinkle chopped green onions on the vegetables for dinner."
Pei Mo Ning had been observing Lu Shiman's words and actions. Her instinct as a psychologist made her notice that every smile of the other person maintained the same arc.
The sunlight shines through the glass window, making Lu Shiman's hair dance, and she looks like an extremely cheerful and sunny girl.
"So Sister Pei, what do you do?" Lu Shiman suddenly leaned closer with her chin in her hand.
"What do you think I do?" Pei Mo Ning did not answer directly, but asked a question in return to understand Lu Shiman's thoughts.
Lu Shiman pondered and looked up at Pei Mo Ning: "Teacher, or doctor."
Pei Mo Ning was somewhat surprised by her sharpness. Generally, patients with repressive personality disorder would curl up in a self-protective shell like a mimosa.
But the girl in front of me is like a thorn growing in the opposite direction. The more painful it is, the more she wants to extend her tentacles to perceive the world.
"Why do you think so?" Pei Mo Ning put down the silver spoon and leaned back against the back of the table and chair.
"Intuition." Lu Shiman replied perfunctorily, lowering his head to stir the coffee.
She had a familiar feeling to Lu Shiman, like the beautiful sister in the university's psychological counseling room who said she was sick.
"Then your intuition is quite accurate. You guessed half right." Pei Mo Ning smiled, but in his heart he was taking in every subtle movement of hers.
Raising her head again, Lu Shiman's smile widened: "Sister Pei, my eldest brother has had his fortune told. His future wife will be either a teacher or a doctor."
"Lu Shiman." Lu Yannan took a sip of coffee, trying to cover up his mistake: "Don't talk nonsense. When did I tell fortunes?" His voice was filled with the velvet-wrapped majesty that was unique to an older brother.
Although he seemed calm and composed, a thin layer of red had actually crept onto the back of his ears.
Lu Shiman rested his chin on the backs of his folded hands and tilted his head to gauge Pei Mo Ning's reaction.
"Hehe, I observed the stars last night and calculated with my fingers."
"Well, you are so awesome. Do you want to calculate whether you will be beaten?" Lu Yannan glanced at her.
She suddenly stood up by supporting herself on the table, blinking rapidly as if there were grains of sand in her eyes: "Oh, I suddenly remembered that Ji Linshen asked me to call him back."
"Excuse me, Sister Pei. I can't help it. The one at home really needs someone."
Without waiting for their reaction, he walked out of the cafe holding his phone.
Lu Yannan retracted his gaze and looked at Pei Mo Ning: "Did you see anything?"
Pei Mo Ning straightened his back and put away his smile: "She is perfect, cheerful and sunny."
Lu Yannan felt a surge of hope in his heart. Perhaps, there was nothing wrong with his sister, and what she did before was just an emotional reaction.
Pei Mo Ning's index finger unconsciously stroked the rim of the cup: "But, this is precisely dangerous."
"Have you ever seen the spinning teacups at an amusement park?"
Lu Yannan's coffee cup stopped in mid-air, his fingertips trembling imperceptibly. "In upbeat music, the one who gets thrown out is usually the one who tries the hardest to maintain balance."
Pei Mo Ning tapped the triangular tissue in front of Lu Shiman with his fingertips: "From the moment she came in to the moment she left, the arc of every smile seemed to have been measured."
"Such perfect cheerfulness..." Pei Mo Ning didn't say anything else.
Lu Yannan's Adam's apple rolled, and the bottom of the cup left a circular mark on the coaster. The icy mist of the cold brew coffee blurred his vision, and countless images flashed in the hazy halo.
It turns out that those bright and vivid moments were all perfect masks that she painted over and over again.
"Patients like this are best at turning sunlight into armor..." Pei Mo Ning noticed the change in Lu Yannan's expression and soothed him softly, "Armor can be cast and removed."
"What should I do?" Lu Yannan spoke, his voice hoarse.
"Does she show much emotion in front of you?"
Lu Yannan's hands trembled and he shook his head.
Pei Moning expected this: "Do you usually have a sudden burst of laughter followed by a long period of silence, or some unconscious stereotyped behavior?"
"During the time when my brother had the accident, she kept unconsciously fiddling with things around her."
As he spoke, his eyes fell out the window.
Lu Shiman stood in the sun, seemed to have noticed something, turned around and smiled at Lu Yannan. The tip of her nose was red from the cold, but her smile was still warm.
"Then I'll go to the coffee shop to find you?" Ji Linshen's voice came from the receiver.
"Okay, okay, come over now. You can also visit our mother by the way."
"Our mother?"
"It's the beautiful sister we met last time. Big brother brought me out to meet her today." Lu Shiman began to gossip: "Today is Big Brother's date. He was embarrassed to come alone, so he brought me along."
Ji Lin understood clearly: "Well, big brother is shy. I'm coming over now. Are you guys not finishing so quickly?"
"Come soon, I haven't seen you for a few hours and I miss you." Lu Shiman expressed his longing generously.
She wanted to give Ji Linshen more sense of security.
Lu Shiman hung up the phone, rubbed his hands which were as cold as death, and went back inside.
Sitting next to Lu Yannan again, she skillfully put her hands under her buttocks.
The warm feeling made her sigh with satisfaction: "I'm alive. My hands were almost frozen off."
Lu Yannan poured a cup of hot water, pulled her hand out, and asked her to hold the cup: "Hold it."
"It's only treating the symptoms, not the root cause." Lu Shiman bent her knuckles and tapped the cup, and the ripples on the water reflected her pouting lips.
"Brother, this can only warm the palms of your hands, not the backs of your hands." She rubbed the wall of the cup with her fingertips, and her voice became very soft.
Lu Yannan stretched out his hand and covered the back of her cold hand with his broad palm: "This way, the back of your hand can also be warmed up."
Lu Shiman curled up her little finger and lightly touched his beating pulse, lowering her eyes to hide her trembling eyelashes.
She stole a glance at Pei Mo Ning's expression, leaned closer to Lu Yannan and lowered her voice: "Brother, it's okay if you don't coax your sister, but you can't not coax your wife."
