Chapter Sixty-Five: Seals

Over the years, she has raised a child alone and brought him to adulthood safely. She must have suffered a lot.

If he hadn't come back so late back then...

Presumably, she wouldn't have married someone casually, and her situation wouldn't be so difficult.

In the end, it was I who let her down.

Thinking of this, Shen Hechuan disregarded everything else and waved his hand, signaling Dizhi to leave.

She wanted to find some nice things for Gu Jingchun and prepare to send them to her.

Dizhi paused for a moment before saying, "Your Highness, about the defense map..."

"It's alright."

Shen Hechuan said casually.

"That's just a piece of waste paper. Even if Da Qi takes it, it won't do any good."

That night.

In a side courtyard of the Yong'an Marquis's residence.

A nimble figure leaped down from the top of the wall and landed slowly in the courtyard.

His toes touched the ground lightly, without making a sound.

However, the moment he landed, a sharp arrow suddenly shot through the air.

Shen Hechuan dodged with a somersault, followed by a barrage of arrows.

Meanwhile, other mechanisms kept shooting out from other corners of the courtyard, keeping people busy.

This forced Shen Hechuan to draw his sword, and he barely managed to dodge it after a few movements.

Seeing that all the mechanisms had stopped working, Shen Hechuan was about to breathe a sigh of relief.

Immediately afterwards, a long sword thrust out in front of him.

He immediately leaped backward and used his longsword to block, barely managing to dodge the attack.

Upon closer inspection, I came across a face that seemed vaguely familiar.

He frowned slightly, but then saw the person opposite him pause, take a step back, and exclaim in surprise.

"Your Highness the Crown Prince!!!"

After an incense stick has burned.

In the main hall.

Gu Jingchun hastily put on a piece of clothing, and with his hair disheveled and yawning, he appeared in front of Shen Hechuan.

Shen Hechuan had a cold face and was full of anger.

He originally wanted to take pity on Gu Jingchun for her hard work today and secretly visit her and give her something fun.

I never expected that I would almost lose my life as soon as I entered this courtyard.

We also have to thank this little girl who had met Gu Jinxi before.

Otherwise, we'll inevitably have to... fight for a while longer.

As he sat there for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, he couldn't help but think of the crossbows that Gu Jinxi had given him.

At the time, he said that his mother had improved this thing, and I was still skeptical. But now, seeing the whole yard full of mechanisms, I have to believe it.

It seems that she has really changed a lot during the five years they were apart.

As Shen Hechuan was thinking this, he saw Gu Jingchun, with her hair down, slowly walk in.

She must have been called over while she was asleep.

He was still squinting and yawning, looking like he hadn't woken up properly.

But Shen Hechuan was stunned when he saw it.

All the anger and resentment in my mind vanished in an instant.

After many years, he was caught off guard and saw her again in this lazy and carefree manner.

Just like back then, after their lovemaking, she nestled contentedly against his chest, like a lazy cat.

She would sometimes look like this when he pulled her up.

It's so beautiful it melts your heart.

Just as Shen Hechuan was slightly taken aback, Gu Jingchun had already walked up to him.

"Your Highness, what brings you here so late at night?"

Shen Hechuan snapped out of his thoughts and placed the arrow in his hand on the table beside him.

"I had no idea that your courtyard contained such a sophisticated mechanism; it rivals even the palace in its security!"

Upon hearing this, Gu Jingchun yawned again and replied nonchalantly.

"What's so strange about that?"

"How could a young and beautiful widow, raising a young child alone, possibly sleep soundly without some means of self-defense?"

Gu Jingchun chuckled softly as he spoke.

"His Highness the Crown Prince is so high and mighty, how could he possibly know the hardships we women face in this world?"

"Sometimes, what these small measures protect is not only one's reputation, but also one's own and one's child's lives."

Upon hearing this, Shen Hechuan was startled and abruptly stood up.

No wonder!

No wonder she improved the crossbow!

No wonder her courtyard had hidden mechanisms.

He couldn't even imagine how much suffering she had endured over the years.

That's why she, despite her frail appearance, modified the crossbow to suit her own needs.

Looking at Gu Jingchun's frail figure, he was filled with emotion, and his hands hanging at his sides tightened.

After a moment, he sighed and spoke slowly.

"I'm sorry, it's my fault."

Shen Hechuan was filled with guilt, and his eyes were full of affection as he looked at Gu Jingchun.

If he had returned sooner, or perhaps sent a few more people to protect her in secret, the outcome would likely have been different.

When he first arrived at the military camp, he was immediately plunged into a fierce battle.

During this period, he also wrote several letters to Gu Jingchun, but they all went unanswered.

Later, the war became deadlocked, and they were almost in danger. His staff kept urging him to leave first.

The thought that if he left, her village would become a death trap for the enemy kept him there.

At the time, he was furious because Gu Jingchun so easily suggested breaking up.

If he had known then how difficult his departure would be for her, he would have done everything in his power to go back.

Filled with remorse, Shen Hechuan stepped forward and embraced Gu Jingchun.
